So, I want to get a device for portable gaming, and I need to decide between the Nintendo DSi or an iPod Touch.

The iPod Touch is more expensive, especially the ones that are 32GB and 64GB which are a lot more expensive than a DSi. But of course, the iPod Touch can also do other things like browse the internet, check email, and so forth.

There aren't too many cartridge DSi games I like right now, but there are some DSiware titles I am interested in.

Which would you get if you had to choose?

the DS is a way better gaming device. the iphone/touch is still great though with some real nice games. but the DS is way better, but dsiware isn't worth the toilet paper its wiped on

im pretty sure the DSi if you really want to play games. An ipod touch is good for more of doing everything such as music, notes, apps. If you only want to play game, the DSi makes more sense cause, well, it plays games.

However, it also really depends on what kind of games. if you want games that will actually be full-fledged games, then the dsi. But if you want those more accessible, pickup, lets play for 5 minutes, yo check this out really fast games, then maybe the ipod, but the ipod really isnt made for gaming. Itll run out of batteries in about 2 hours playing games.

dead on. if you really want to have a mobile gaming device, don't fool yourself with the Ipod, get a dsi. I'm not saying Ipod doesn't have some fun games, but they aren't full fledged games. Cost wise, the Iphone will cost more at first, but once you start taking into account the cost of games for dsi vs the ipod, it'll even out, so don't worry too much about that.

If there aren't many actual DS games you're interested in, get the Touch. The DSi is a fine system, but the things you could compare to the Touch (App Store/DSiWare, camera, music player, web browser) are utter garbage. DSiWare is probably the worst online gaming service in videogaming history. Sega Channel was better.

So a game that scored a 9 on the original Game Boy is just as good by the same standards as a game getting a 9.0 on PC? Oke, whatever you say.

So a DS 9 game with outdated hardware and a new controller is better than a 9 high quality 3D game???

Standards are subjective and scores arent

I feel my Wii games that score a 9 anywhere are as good as Halo 3 or whatever else scores a 9

You forgot to add the "free" part in there. You and I both know it matters. That being said, sure. Hard to be "outdated" when the generation isn't even over yet, no? Which just leaves pricing. So generally yes, a game you paid for is probably better than a game being given for free. There's exceptions, but that is generally true.

I'm sure thread's creator isn't some silly fanboy so he cares about more than just AAA games, not to mention he can recognize DS's own AAAs to be far more impressive than iPod Touch's ones

If all you care about is playing great games the answer is DS lite. It's $130 or something, less used. It's also a great time to jump into the DS, as a significant portion of it's awesome games are 10-20 dollars. It really is a fantastic gaming device with some games that, imho, stand up to anything consoles have been giving us this gen.

oh, but out of the DSi and Ipod touch i'd go DSi for sure. Heck, i'm thinking of getting a DSi over an ipod/iphone and i already have 2 lites - one is the zelda special edition :)

Did everyone fail to notice the TC mentioned he wasn't interested in many cartridge games? Almost every non-Nintendo DSiWare title is available on the App Store for less. The ones that aren't are either clocks or Art Style games, which while fun aren't worth an entire handheld purchase.

I think he said that there aren't many cartridge DSi games he likes that much, not that he was looking to avoid cartridges. Did i misunderstand?

I didn't think there were any specific DSi cartridge games yet anyways. Or does he mean the DS library in general?

I just assumed he meant DS games in general as there are no (well, one?) DSi specific games at retail.

NOVA isnt free and is better but I think its more amusing that a free game on the Ipod Touch is better looking then the entire DS library and has better gameplay then every DS FPS

Amazing. Its a handheld, nobody cares about graphics. On that note, the DS doesn't really have many FPS's. If we were comparing RPGs, well, there'd be no debate which device wins there. At any rate, I think it's pretty obvious why you're just a vocal minority.

Digital buttons are the future imo and the Iphone/Ipod Touch is just as innovative as the DS in delivering. Have you ever stayed up late at night with a light near your gba raising your training your pokemon when your parents hear the CLICK CLICK and investigate grounding you Or you want to game in class but your teacher catches because the CLICK CLICK My only beef is that it uses up the screen but that can be fixed if games make controls on left and right and middle for gameplay

Also iphone makes noise with the tapping on the screen.

So basically the iPod touch is the best choice for people under 18 trying to play games in class. Man, your reasoning is just the best ever.

yeah.. i'm not 16, I don't have to hide my video game playing? and they are not the future, you think the next round of consoles will give you a blank controller with a touch screen or will they continue with real controllers? easy answer.

I'm not a DS fan. You're the one who brought up stuff that would only matter to kids. Not me. At any rate, what obnoxious clicks? How do you use your DS? (assuming you have one) Do you smack it with a hammer or something? Besides, its a handheld. How immersed are you actually going to get? Come on now. I know you worship Apple and all, but this is getting a bit nonsensical :?

A step in the right direction?! Digital controls are downright awful. DS buttons are virtually silent anyway.

[QUOTE="Skittles_McGee"][QUOTE="ghost392"] Digital buttons are the future imo and the Iphone/Ipod Touch is just as innovative as the DS in delivering. Have you ever stayed up late at night with a light near your gba raising your training your pokemon when your parents hear the CLICK CLICK and investigate grounding you Or you want to game in class but your teacher catches because the CLICK CLICK My only beef is that it uses up the screen but that can be fixed if games make controls on left and right and middle for gameplayghost392

So basically the iPod touch is the best choice for people under 18 trying to play games in class. Man, your reasoning is just the best ever.

No Im over 18 and a DS fan saying Ipod Touch is aimed towards kids never thought I would see the day XD Im saying the obnoxious clicks of a button take away from an experience imo and digital controls arent perfect but they are a step in the right dirrection

giving up highly responsive controls for no button clicking noises, that are already nowhere near to the point of distraction...ya, thats a great tradeoff ;)

Well the reason I was considering the DSi as opposed to the DS Lite is because of the DSi ware, which I assume only work on the DSi.

DS lite >>> both

JuarN18

how exactly? I loved my DS lite but I prefer the DSi tenfold (then again I also still own a GBA SP so the no gameboy advance slot thing never really was an issue for me...)

[QUOTE="Skittles_McGee"][QUOTE="ghost392"] So a DS 9 game with outdated hardware and a new controller is better than a 9 high quality 3D game???

ghost392

You forgot to add the "free" part in there. You and I both know it matters. That being said, sure. Hard to be "outdated" when the generation isn't even over yet, no? Which just leaves pricing. So generally yes, a game you paid for is probably better than a game being given for free. There's exceptions, but that is generally true.

NOVA isnt free and is better but I think its more amusing that a free game on the Ipod Touch is better looking then the entire DS library and has better gameplay then every DS FPS

I don't think so, the stylus is way more responsive. In Nova the enemies spawn in front of you so you dont have to turn around and when you do have to turn a whole 180 it's way slower than any FPS on the DS.

That's true, however with the DSi you lose GBA backwards compatibility - it's also worth noting again that the DSlite would save you a decent amount of money.

Though, if you don't care about GBA compatibility and are interested in DSiware, the DSi is still an amazing machine. Personally, i don't think DSiware has developed enough to warrant the higher price.. but, then again, there are still some great things on it and there could be a bright future in store for it. Either way, go DS over ipod touch.

The iPod Touch is more expensive, especially the ones that are 32GB and 64GB which are a lot more expensive than a DSi. But of course, the iPod Touch can also do other things like browse the internet, check email, and so forth.

Actually the DSi has an internet browser too. Though I'm not sure how well it works given the relatively low screen resolutions.

If you're primary focus is playing GAMES, dont even consider the Ipod touch...NEVER.

If you want a MUSIC player, def get the Ipod...its that simple.

iPod if you want a multimedia device. DS is you're actually interested in games that will last you longer than 5 minutes.

Terribly. You get two zoom levels, one that's way too small to read anything and one that's way too close, leaving you to scroll horizontally every line to try and read something. It's (more or less) an abomination. It's also really, really slow and prone to running out of memory.
