I don't blame Nintendo for doing this, Majora's Mask was the only real hardcore Zelda game and it did not receive the recognition it deserved.poster
There's also Ocarina of Time Master Quest.
I honestly wonder how much people would play these games if they didnt have the "zelda" name to back them.
More and more recently, zelda fails to stand out from the crowd.
JPOBS
True....but you can do this to anything. I wonder how many people would buy those Abercrombie t-shirts if they didn't say Abercrombie on them.
It's all about branding. The Zeldas and Marios are great brands.

The only Zelda that didn't stand out of the crowd was Twilight Princess and it's annoying how if a series makes one mistake it's pretty much dead to some people.
The same thing happened with SMG because of Super Mario Sunshine.

Yeah. I want a real sequel to Wind Waker. Not the spin-off side story that was Phantom Hourglass.
Zassimick
Wether you like it or not, PH is the direct sequel to WW.
I would rather have a prequel to Wind Waker. I want to know why Hyrule was flooded. Sure the story was told through the stained-glass windows, but I think it would be great to play through that.
But I guess it said the Hero never came, which how would you play through that segment then? I just figure that he was there, but he failed and Ganon finished him. Zelda then called upon the Sages and they flooded the world in an attempt to stop Ganon.
That's what I've pictured since that story was told in Wind Waker. :)
You can't play a Zelda game without Link.
And The Wind Waker is in the timeline that Link left behind at the end of Ocarina of Time. Unless you play as Ganondorf and be the bad guy....
And besides, Phantom Hourglass was not hard, it was frustrating.

I know, that's why I always thought that when the story in Wind Waker said "the Hero never came" or something along those lines, that those words are not to be taken so literally. You know old tales where things get stretched and stuff? Maybe something like that happened with that tale. Maybe Link did indeed come prepared for the fight. But it was this time, this Link, that failed to defeat Ganon. When this happened, Zelda did the only thing she could: call upon the Sages and flood the world.
shorter and less hardcore? I was actually hoping that it would be announced but if Miyamoto really said that, and they're going to simplify zelda (not that it was very complex in the first place) for the masses, then I might as well ebay my wii right nowaerman176
Thats kinda selfish to say. Newcomers to the series will be discouraged by hard difficulty. And Wind Waker was good game despite it being piss easy ;)
Nintendo games are not about difficulty, challenge and competition. If you want competitive gameplay go play CoD4 on veteran etc.
Mario Galaxy wasnt hard, but neither was it easy. Its just right for a platformer wich purpose is to let the gamer have ''fun''.
If what I see in the trailer doesn't piss me off, then the new Zelda will have already failed.ZeldaMaster32You want a WW-esque level of outrage?

Id like to see the whole good guy bad guy dynamic changed, usually its very clear cut with the good princess and the evil ganon. But what if Ganon portrayed himself as a saviour to the people of Hyrule who were tired of the mismanagement and corruption of the wealthy monarchy? I once read a book where a kingdom was under threat from a man named John Farson who called himself the good man and claimed to lead a rebellion for democracy when really he was a vicious mass murderer (the dark tower series for anyone whose interested but it isnt an integral plot point)
My point is that hyrule could be engulfed in revolution of some kind and link must decide whether he is being manipulated by either side and who he should ally with, I think it would make an interesting plot point, revitalise the presentation and steer it away from its fairytale leanings.
Gameplay wise i think they should make greater use of the overworld rathr than as a means of getting from 1 dungeon to the next and put small villages and farms around, make the world seem more alive

Right there, that's a more mature storyline that I would find intriguing. Doesn't have to be about the gore and such. Great example!

Ive actually been thinking about that for a year now, since i finished tp i thought it was good but in need of a shakeup, zelda isnt the game for blood and guts but it has the potential to be one of nintendos most mature franchises and it would be great to see them use that potential
[QUOTE="prodiqy32"]why not? nintendo thinks new IP's are dumb.Shazenab
So let me get this straight. You want Nintendo to abandon the most consistant gaming franchise in history?
They dont have to abandon anything..... Just make some different games!!!!! I been playing nintendo for 22 years, Mario, zelda and metroid are getting tired. SMG was great but the last zelda and mp3 sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they just keep making the same 3 games over and over, I will just move on.

That whole entire desert wind speech. That is exactly why WW had my favourite ending of any game, for the first time in zelda history their was some sort of proper character development and we had a glimpse at ganons possible motivation and his life giving him a bit of depth and helping us understand why he does things ironically making him more human than the others (though the king was interesting at the end as well) I am exaggerating it a touch but it shows that game characters (and those in Zelda) dont have to be completely 1 dimensional

Some things about the game were more difficult I guess, but that's because TP's bosses and most enemies were easy as well. But TP had the more difficult dungeons just because of the size. That Sky Temple was ugh...

I figured the end of Twilight Princess would be Hyrule flooding since before it came out they said the game took place between OoT and the WW. I remember watching all these AMVs on youtube of TP clips mixed with the theme song from Requiem of a Dream, and it was just epic.
Then I played the game. I was so disappointed my idea wasn't the way Nintendo went with the game. That was the only disappointment I had of Twilight Princess too.

Seriously though, imagine if link actually died the zelda were talking about. Nintendo has the potential to create a HUGE game on their hands.

Oh yeah, death isn't always the way to make a game epic and sometimes it may seem a little cliche, but I think Link failing would be awesome for not only showing how Hyrule became flooded, but also opens the the door to a more mature game. Why would he fail? Would it be because he was double-crossed? Did he have to sacrifice himself? All these ideas.
I just think it could be very epic if done right, and its an idea I've had since the first video of TP was released back in 2004.

I think the idea I mentioned earlier (page 6 probably) would allow for a more epic story and could also create a greater poignancy (dont think i dont like your idea it is very good and i could see it becoming a great game if they mange not to contradict the WW opening) but imagine, rather than the usual monsters, you might find yourself forced to fight ordinary hyrulians as you become one of the last supporters of a decaying system, imagine link becoming despised by the people who he is supposed to be fighting for, this is more than failing zelda its failing everyone. It would be interesting to see a hero fall from grace and it would help us relate to the character as we realise his moral dilema. It wouldnt be like KOTOR for example where you become good or bad but the story would develop both sides in a positive and negative light making them all the more ambiguous
The key to mature story telling is to respect your audience but not to pander to their every wish, half the ideas floated around forums are either bloated messes or belong on some crazed fetish site, it dosent have to be the most original story (hey even the one i suggested has heavy influences) but you have to care about the characters which means well written, well developed roles. We have already established that it can be done, now nintendo needs to build upon the foundations of the WW ending and create a precedent for fleshed out characters that we can invest emotion in, as a visual, audio and interactive medium games should be in the best position to do that as we can connect with characters and share their experiences. The next Zelda game needs to understand thisJohn_Coffey
Very good points; It may not see like it to some, but Nintendo can create some nice stories sometimes.
Man...i hope in the new Zelda you can play as the Evil Ganon  That way we don't always see Good Triumphing (Prequel to WInd Waker FTW ;))
Well it's going to come sooner or later. Personally, I'm hoping sooner. :D
TP was amazing, but a Legend of Zelda built from the ground up just for the Wii? Win.

A game such as that would truly be epic, especially a Zelda title. I think it could easily lead to the flooding of Hyrule.
Sad to think that Nintendo probably would never do something like this.

I was totally thinking that while writing my last post. I can't believe I didn't write it!
As much as I would like to think Nintendo would do something incredible like that for one of their big series, they won't. They're too focused on doing what they are good at. Which is amazing work and some of the best games out there, but they should really take a risk by writing an epic story with great storytelling for the next Zelda.
If only I was close friends with Miyamoto. :(
