Wii U is gonna be generation behind again when PS4 and nextbox launch in 2014-2015
This time casuals won't buy it because it offers nothing innovate

I hope at least it's that, yes... Bare bones or not, that's just enough to suffice when you need to set up games with friends. Voice chat, other functions can be reserved for the full app and I'm ok with that. The only thing I'm thinking of is, how will this launch? Since you have to download this free app, and it's not coming in the firmware update, that's what bothers me. Not everyone will have this built into their systems unless they download the application. This limits it already. It should just be built into the system via firmware update. yoshi_64As char said, you could get the message from spotpass. About the start up while playing games, maybe they might integrate it into the friend list? Or add a short cut where the pencil icon is?
Now they need to do what they're best at - show good games. New Star Fox, F-Zero, Wave Race, Metroid and of course Mario and Zelda should be a given. And possibly a new high quality IP. Also, they need good 3rd party support (mostly form the Japanese devs - I don't care about Western devs that much) and a cheap price point for the new console.
You're Kidding right? More levels than Super Mario World? That game has like 200+ stages. I wish they could do that with todays standards but thats a Crapload of levels you're asking for.If nintendo wants to sell me on the wii u then they need to make it affordable and include a game thats basically a sequel to super mario world but with more levels and better graphics.

I'd be delighted if Nintendo were hurt enought to "get with the times"... but not hurt enought to stop making games :Plocopatho
Get on with the times in what way?
Tech, yeah, they seem a bit behind the times in that, Third Party Policies, again, yeah. Online... well yeah. But they are definately improving that, in the next month they will have a complete revamp of their online with players being able to host communities with custom rules, leaderboards, ect.
Software design? Hell no!
I am really excited for the Demos that are coming to the 3DS :D
Okay here is a few tips Nintendo on how to make the Wii U's launch successful:
Here is one last big thing...
Do not show off any feature that will not be avialable at launch

Nintendo has done this for other apps that it has released on the eShop- Netflix, Nintendo Video and Pokedex 3D, for instance.I know that SpotPass will be likely used to inform users of this new App (just like it will likely be used to inform people of HULU Plus) but I'm just throwing out there caution to the wind that it's not being built into the system's OS via an update, which likely means this application will have a few restrictions in how it performs. Unless Nintendo will start letting aside a small amount of RAM for developers to create apps that can be used in conjunction to the OS's HOME features, or they do this as a first themselves with this app. Not creating it and having it installed via a firmware update worries me that it won't have the ability to multi-task without the need exit a current application in suspension. :| I know I worry over possibilities, but I'm just discussing my thoughts and worries like anyone would on a forum. :P I'm assuming that this application will either be available in a truncated form from within a game, or it will be accessible in a truncated form from the home menu without having to close the previously suspended application. I mean, I know Nintendo doesn't 'get' online, but I hope they're not dumb enough to give us a messaging system, and then make it so it can't be used from within a game, thereby defeating the very point of the messaging system to begin with.
What I want from Wii U
[QUOTE="argetlam00"][QUOTE="charizard1605"] So you think and say the 3DS is a failure period?charizard1605
Not yet by I'm predicting it will be. I believe that Vita and 3DS will be the last of the handhelds.
I say it will go on to sell 60-70 million, and be a great success. It will also not be the last handheld, although I suppose the next Nintendo handheld might have more social and connectivity features (like the 3DS has more of those than the DS) just to keep it competitive against other devices. I think they will be the last of the true handhelds, in 5 years they will have phone functionality IMO. Sony just completely bought out Ericsson you know, hint hint.Nintendo could well be heading the way of Sega if the Wii-U fails.XenoNinja
Yeah. And I don't think that most casuals that bought the Wii are going to gobble up the Wii U at all, because most of them are happy with the Wii & it's games.
Wii and the 3DS will both go the way of the Gamecube.Deniable_Ops
The 3DS, possibly (though I doubt it), and the Wii, No. Not at all. The Wii outsold the gamecube a looong time ago.
Well it's good on Nintendo's part because the Wii U should have a build in hard drive and not a SD card.
I love how everyone is predicting the Wii U is going to fail already. Boy, do we have a long year.
I'm glad Nintendo is adressing their issues and learning from the mistakes of the 3DS launch. It makes me a lot more confident in them. And I'm hoping that Pokemon game is not Pokepark 2 in english.

Sony is making a big mistake if they think they can just add a phone to the ps vita and put it on the market. Pricing will be a huge issue for them. Look at the games that have people really interested in the system. Can they really release them for 5 dollars a pop? No? Well then they'll need to release games like Angry Birds or Infinity Blade--which do well on iOS but are routinely derided in the gamer community (you know, the audience that might actually buy a Playstation phone). Those that want to play quality games on the go would have to migrate back to Ninty. Those that are already invested in iOS or android probably on't switch.
Also the 99 cent market isn't the land of milk and honey everyone makes it out to be.
The extremely high revenues reported by a small number of developer skew the arithmetic mean significantly. If you looked at that as an average, it would be easy to say "the average game developer has made about $165,000″.
What is also telling is that if you were in the 75th percentile, you would have made about $30,000 on the App Store. This means that only 25% of developers have made more than $30,000 lifetime total revenue selling games on the App Store. Conversely, we can see that 25% of developers have made less than $200.
http://www.streamingcolour.com/blog/2011/09/28/results-ios-game-revenue-survey/
Even the "extremely high" revenues posted by big sellers still only gross a few million. I doubt a games division can survive on that revenue.

He isn't talking about that, he says that he personally wants a new Pokemon game, not Gray, so if they want him to buy it, it should be a new game, not Gray version. Therefore, as far as Pokemon is concerned, they are, in his eyes, hanging by a thread.New Pokemon game in Spring?
Don't see how it could be anything but Grey.
Hmmm, I wonder how much sales would pick up if Grey released exclusively on the 3DS

I do think, in the future, gaming handhelds should adopt standardized OSs like Android. That way, Sony can have all of the smartphone games in *addition* to premium retail-level software on top of that. People would no longer have to say, "should I buy so-and-so phone to play Game Dev Story?" because games like Game Dev Story would automatically be in their gaming handheld's library.

There are two questions specifially pertaining to Nintendo though: a) We know Nintendo will not partner on the hardware front with any other corporation... how will Nintendo make a smartphone handheld, especially since, as they are adamant on this front, smartphone gaming degrades traditional handheld gaming? I do not think most of the common public would buy a Nintendo branded smartphone, and certainly, the games will not push such a phone over the competition for them, especially as for most of them, gaming is a secondary, if not tertiary or possibly even owner, concern, particularly when deciding on the purchase of a phone. b) Considering that there are only two major smartphone OS's in the market- Android and iOS- and with Android being in bed with Sony (as far as game makers are concerned), and Apple being highly insular and not licensing out iOS to other companies, what standardized OS will Nintendo even use?[QUOTE="SakusEnvoy"]Even if Sony does start developing a specialized gaming smartphone, they'd probably continue to release a non-smartphone standalone version as well. Nintendo could actually use Android too. It would actually be much cheaper (literally, free) for them than going through the trouble they do right now making their own OS. Even if Google is a big partner of Sony's, Android itself is free and open source.Literally, anyone can take Android and put it in whatever they want to, no licensing fees involved. They can also skin it and modify the interface significantly; when you look at devices like the Kindle Fire, Amazon put in a unique interface that's totally unlike the normal Android interface. I'm sure Nintendo or Sony would do the same.
The problem isn't hardware, either, since devices like the Vita and iPad 2 share very similar hardware architectures. The only possible reason I can think of not to do it, but unfortunately this is a big big reason not to do it and probably why Sony opted not to, is Android is infamous right now for high levels of piracy.

Ah, piracy. Now we touch upon the bane of the matter :P Android is notoriously open source, and with that does come a high level of piracy. Even assuming Sony and Nintendo could use Android, I highly doubt they would. But the hardware portion of your post did not answer my question, which was- who exactly would buy a Nintendo phone? And why? And would Nintendo, being a company that has now for more than thirty years been exclusively focused on video games, even be able to make a good phone? They dont seem to quite grasp modern reality, thats their problem....

See now, the thing is...WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT NINTENDO'S ONLINE PLANS FOR THE WII U ARE.
Commenting on them at this point is entirely futile.
Read the OP, they've changed their plans.^ they've said several times that they'll leave it to the individual devs... or in other words they have no plan at this time.

I actually don't think Nintendo will ever make a smartphone, anyhow. Especially not as long as they stick to the two-screen DS clamshell design. That's pretty much impossible to adapt into a smartphone. I also agree - I don't think Nintendo has any interest in designing smartphones, either.
But, they still really should find a way to pick up all the games that smartphones are getting. If not through Android, through some special licensing agreement with the Google Market. And we should get those games *at their iOS/Android prices*! DSiWare and 3DSWare are terrible and not getting any better. Even as they promise things will get better, Nintendo really seems clueless on what to do about it. It's hardly a surprise that their only major downloadable game has moved over to iOS.
