Also, Shadow Hearts > FFX.

This is fun.  I never really knew how much that game irritated me until now.

Jandurin

IMO, FFX probably has the worse characters to ever grace a Final Fantasy game.
Tidus and Wakka were just plain annoying.
Yuna gets old after a while with the whole "Ooooh woe is me, but I must go on" thing.
Rikku is cute but doesn't really bring anything. She's like a Yuffie clone with no soul.

Auron was cool, although generic.
Kimahri and Lulu were ok because they said like 10 words in the entire game.

FFX really has the poorest cast of characters of any FF game out there.

[QUOTE="mjarantilla"]FFVI proves you wrong. Better story, better characters, better villain, better setting, better gameplay, better artwork. But Planescape: Torment is the best RPG ever. FFVI is just the best JRPG ever. The only ones comparable are FFIV and Chrono Trigger.RahnAetas

 LOL  FFVI  HHAHAHHAHAHHAH

only like 3-4 characters even get any development   the rest are just filler, and the villian was lame kefka had no real motivation to do anything he was just a cliched crazy villian who wants to destroy things....

the whole game was really quite boring with the exception of terra, celes, and locke.

Ummm... FFVI is great, what about Gestahl and Kefka?  What about Shadow, the lone ninja?  Edgar?

And Planescape does have the best story.

The only characters that didn't really get developed in FFVI was Mog, Umaro, and Gogo.  Everyone else had a storyline, and for the most part all of their storylines were optional.  FFVI actually centers around Kefka, as opposed to the heros of the story.  As for Kefka's motivation, his was pure:  Power and hate.  He wasn't filled with angst, he wasn't emotionally torn, he wasn't the victim of some controved plot device forcing him to be a mad force of power.

In short, it was perhaps the last good example of good vs evil.  Nowadays, villians need some elaborate backstory and reason to be 'evil'.  Almost all villians are a result of circumstance now.

the problem is you are thinking of good and evil as absolutes... they are subjective and will vary from person to person...

thats why seymour is better than kefka in that sense

seymours motivations were he thought the only way to bring peace to spira was killing everyone. the only way to eliminate pain and suffering was to be dead....  hes only doing whats hes doing for spira to take their sorrow away as he puts it.

kefka on the other hand was the generic evil guy who wanted power.

seymour wins

If you're looking for a reason behind Kefka's madness, he reveals it in the end if you paid any attention at all.  He could not understand why people bothered trying if in the end all they had built and lived for could be snuffed out in a second.  He acts without empathy or remorse because in his eyes everything is ultimately pointless, empty, and shallow.  The anti-thesis to his character was all the heros, who through their travels, show you that even though many of them where empty, and felt their lives meaningless, that they in the end found their hope, their meaning.

It was a poetic dance between the two sides.

For a hero to be great, the villian must be greater.  The villain has to be so good at what he does that they force the hero to grow and over come what the villian stands for.  Otherwise you get a lame plot in where it's nothing but enlightening self-discovery and lovely dovey support from the support characters, and in the end the hero is never truely challenged to the core, to grow.  From start to finish very few FFVI characters were the same at the end.

dang that was actually pretty well ill admit i only palyed the game once so i probably missed some things LOL

what you said makes me want to go back and paly it.

incredible story  (should have won an oscar)

lots of gameplay (i put like  150 hours into this game cause there was so much to do and cutomizing the sphere grid was fun)

soundtrack (best soundtrack ever, i bought the 4 disc collectors edition FFX soundtrack and love it.)

graphics (at the time they were amazing and still hold up quite well the artsyle is very diverse and we see all kinds of landscapes)

overall = no game can match the overall level of enjoyment I and many others had from FFX cause it was the complete package. great story, great soundtrack, great gameplay, lots of replay, great graphics. its liek palying through an oscar winning movie. the game is  that GOOD

This thread is made of suck and lose.

Everyone knows that Xenogears and Final Fantasy VI are the best JRPG to ever grace the world.

In honor of this thread, I'm officially opening FF6 for the GBA and am going to play it again for the first time (since I played FF3 on the SNES again and again).  Never played it while it was called FFVI, though.

I started it, too. I wonder if it's just bad memory or whatnot, but it seems like the dialogue's improved quite a bit. Better localization?

FFVI really is the best in the series.

It was certainly the highest point in the Final Fantasy series. Everything else was disappointment after disappointment with IX and XII being the little roadbumps you barely notice.

Yeah,the localisation is different.They've changed some of Kefka's famous quote like that "Son of a submariner" or something like that(can't remember,played FFVI long time ago).

I thought the same thing after I played it...I don't think i'll ever play another game that was as moving as FFX was. I had around 200 hours in. About 176 hours on FF12,and 18 months on FF11 (stay away from FF11)

I'd pop in FFVI (Anthology) and play it through the end again if it wasn't for those godforsaken load times.

Someone really dropped the ball on that.

I know.  It was a cringe-fest.  I played halfway through Chrono Trigger before the load  times made me stop and just borrow my friend's SNES copy again.

They did a good job with FFIV, though, if I remember correctly.

RPGs that are better than FFX:

FFIV

FFT

Star Ocean

Star Ocean: The Second Story

Legend of Legaia

Xenogears

Xenosaga

Vagrant Story

Vangaurd Bandits

Arc The Lad 2

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Cross

Contact

Grandia

Alundra

POKEMON

The list goes on and on

Games that are better than FFX:

Far too many to list.

Seriously, FFX may be the best game ever for one-armed autistic children, and not to say that it isn't a wonderful game, it's not as good as a lot of other games.

I like Final Fantasy X a lot but come on, it's not even top 10 games ever. Heck, if you had a poll among final fantasy enthusiasts Final Fantasy X would probably finish 3rd (after FF6 and FF7) for best game in the series. Zerostatic0

I agree.  A great game that should be played by almost everyone.  But still is not better than FF6, FF7.

except for FF6, FF7, FF8, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Disgaea, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia... and that's just games in the RPG genre I'm listing off the top of my head.

The Sphere Grid System - Piss poor. Absolutely piss poor. No more quick, intuitive level ups - no that would be too simple - no more materia or draws that I can always swap around if I feel I made a mistake - now I have to plan a death march around a game board, withhold level ups until I find certain items, et cetera.

It's almost as bad as KOTOR (avoid leveling up until your become a Jedi) or Oblivion (don't run, jump, attack, or sneak if you need to level up another skill to get your +5 first, or else!) at detrating from my ability to just enjoy the game.

Pseudo-Love Story - Outside of graphics, there's nothing about this love story that was impressive. FF8 did a much better job of creating a love story I could appreciate, and it resolves itself in the end. In FFX I felt like "did you really do this just so you could make X-2?"

Sequel - Worst thing to ever happen to a Final Fantasy game. X-2 was so bad that it retrospectively ruined FFX for me.

FFX wasn't a bad JRPG, it had an okay storyline and a lot of cool fmv (the first two hours of the game? awesome), but at the end of the day the bread-and-butter (battle system and level up system) wasn't well done, and that detracted a great deal from the game.

yeah xenogears had the best story ever but it didnt feel like hte complete package for me.

it had very lackluster gameplay, and disc 2 was a mess.

the story is basically the only reason to paly it. but i must admit the story is incredible very MATURE themes beats any movie ever made easily

Are you serious?  That pseudo-metaphysical jargon they start spewing out later in the game makes me want to up-chuck.  I'd give the story a C+ as far as RPGs go...  A D as far as movies go.

I also think FFX is an incredible game, it is my all time favorite and is definitely in the top 10 best games ever made. It holds a very special place in my heart and you are right, it does everythign right and probably has one of the best stories in a game ever. But I think it is possible that eventually a game will come along that is better but its really all preference. Some people would swear Oblivion is better but really the two games offer completely different kinds of experiences. But I believe FFX has the most emotional impact on the player.

Xenogears was nothing more than a more convoluted Neon Genesis Evangelion stretched 60 hours long.

FFX = 60 hour cutscene with gameplay thrown in. You couldnt even skip the freakin cutscenes either. FFX was a joke, but X-2 was more of a joke then that. And well we know how crap FF11 was. FF12 was the best from last gen by a long shot.

Considering FFX was the worse Final Fantasy title to date, That makes about 11 others better, and Tactics of course.

incredible story  (should have won an oscar)

lots of gameplay (i put like  150 hours into this game cause there was so much to do and cutomizing the sphere grid was fun)

soundtrack (best soundtrack ever, i bought the 4 disc collectors edition FFX soundtrack and love it.)

graphics (at the time they were amazing and still hold up quite well the artsyle is very diverse and we see all kinds of landscapes)

overall = no game can match the overall level of enjoyment I and many others had from FFX cause it was the complete package. great story, great soundtrack, great gameplay, lots of replay, great graphics. its liek palying through an oscar winning movie. the game is  that GOOD

Incredible story?  You are aware that squaresoft is simply following the same overall plot format that they have emulated since FF7?  And I also assume that you are quite aware of how shallow and hollow the world of Spira really is.  Let me go so far as to say that you've probably never read over any decent work of fantasy or science fiction.  I can't think of a single video game that competes with current fiction in terms of quality -- even games that completely shatter the average gaming market in terms of quality and depth (Baldur's Gate II is a great example). FFX had a  terrible story and even worse characters.

But yes, it did feature wonderful art (outside of the terrible "all-too-squaresoft" character models) and a solid soundtrack.  Replay? Hardly.  You're presented a narrow linear world that lacks depth or meaning.  Why would you replay?

FFX best?!?! Far from it. FFIV-FFVIII were tons better. Not to mention many many Rpgs are better then FFX. Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana 2&3, Earthbound, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, Xenosaga 1&3, Chronocross, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia, Illusion of Gaia, Golden Sun 1&2. I could go on and on. As a JRPG FFX was average, I mean sure I loved how most of the lines had VO, Blitz ball was an awesome minigame, and Auron speaks for himself, but you can't overlook the fact that the grid system sucked. Tidus was annoying as hell, Soundtrack wasn't very good compared to the other FF Soundtracks, and the story was meh.

Sometimes when I hear people claim FFX as "teh bestest rpg evar", I wonder if they have even touched the original 9 FFs.

Planescape: Torment does.

yeah xenogears had the best story ever but it didnt feel like hte complete package for me.

it had very lackluster gameplay, and disc 2 was a mess.

the story is basically the only reason to paly it. but i must admit the story is incredible very MATURE themes beats any movie ever made easily

Are you serious? That pseudo-metaphysical jargon they start spewing out later in the game makes me want to up-chuck. I'd give the story a C+ as far as RPGs go... A D as far as movies go.

Xenogears was nothing more than a more convoluted Neon Genesis Evangelion stretched 60 hours long.

That's being a bit harsh. I thought Xenogears was overall a great rpg.

[QUOTE="mjarantilla"]FFVI proves you wrong. Better story, better characters, better villain, better setting, better gameplay, better artwork. But Planescape: Torment is the best RPG ever. FFVI is just the best JRPG ever. The only ones comparable are FFIV and Chrono Trigger.

I'd be willing to bet 98% of this board never played Planescape: Torment. Most top 12 RPG lists you see around here go something like; FF1-12, greatest rpgs evar!!!!!!

I look at it this way: At least it's not Xenosaga.

I've playe many FFs and this is one of my favorites, I won't say is the best ever but it was great, the summon system characters, the sphere grid was fun, it might feel a bit straight forward but that didn't matter much.

This is the FF quality line everyone should follow :P

VI > VII > VIII > XII > IV > IX > V > X > II > I > III > XI > X-2DireToad

As soon as I read you had VI first, and VII second, I was behind you all the way. These kids who started playing Final Fantasy with the PS2 don't know how much they missed out on...

Also, while Xenogears was a flawed RPG (cutscenes took too long, sometimes you had to sit through 20 minutes of them to get to a hard boss fight, lose, and watch it all over again), it was an incredibly interesting one, in my opinion. And to the guy who called it a 60 hour Neon Genesis Evangelion game (not too far from the truth): That would sell me, any day of the week. ;)
