Okay, lets say SMG3 sells 20m copies, and Zelda U sells 15m. What are the other ~30 million people doing with the system that would make Nintendo actual competition to the PS4/720 that will likely have install bases of 50m within 5 years of their release? The problem with Nintendo games is that they are all for the exact same demographic. If you like Mario, good chances are you also like DK, Metroid, Pikmin, etc. It's not like Sony's first party that caters to all sorts of different demographics as well as having 3rd parties fill in a massive void for people with certain tastes. With Nintedo's consoles, people who buy them are there for Mario, Zelda, and Monster Hunter. People that aren't into that have little reason to own the console.

Like I said, The Wii U will be just like the Wii, a supplementary system. How many people that post on this board owned only a Wii for the entirety of last gen? Less than 5? Whereas there were several people who owned only a 360, PC, or PS3 for the majority of last gen until other platforms became very cheap.

You mean the handheld outpacing DS as of December 31 2012, launch aligned. Having shipped 30 million units in 1 year 10 months.

Hardware is as of August 2012 being sold at a profit.

Animal Crossing and Pokemon X / Y are dropping later this year. Those titles will drive hw sales and MK7/3DLand/NSMB2 will continue to beast, selling at steady rates over a long period of time. These games are now in the 5-8 million sold range, and counting.

3DS monopolized the dedicated handheld market by taking out Sony were it matters: Japan (For those unaware, Japan = only place that supports handhelds with software)

The system has a healthy upcoming library consisting of a steady stream of great-amazing games, both retail and eshop.

3DS is nothing but a solidified success. Vita... ouch.

It was also the second best selling game in PSN North America ( outsold a lot of new games on PSN like DS3 and so on ).. it was the best selling game on the EU PSN and best selling game in EU Europe :)

Mostly true.

Mario / Zelda are the games everyone gather around, and split up from there. Some buy, Pikmin, others get Kirby. The person who owns Kirby doesn't want Pikmin and vice versa, but both own Zelda.

Thing is people buy Playstation consoles for the 3rd party games, they have always been the main system sellers. GTA, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear. Nintendo doesn't want that. They want Mario to do 30 millionz, AND GTA doing 15m. It's not possible to achieve that for two reasons: competition and the high risk involved making a fully-featured system means 1 flop and you're out as a small company (look at Sony with PS3). Basically Nintendo is the indie dev trying to fight the big bullies with clever ideas, they can't compete head to head applying brute force.

its been doing great, last gen handhelds use to outsell consles and the 3ds been neck and neck with consoles for the longest time now

I think the Wii U will be fine. These sales are awful, but things will get better soon. Even if it does end up doing poorly, Nintendo isn't going to drop it and I know I will end up enjoying the console either way, so I'm not worried.

Yeah I agree. I think this way with most consoles tbh. There will be times where things are going bad and everybody starts predicting doom. Said console may end up with lackluster sales and a lesser library then the competion overall, but when its all said and done, there will always be some games that made the purchase worth it. I bet thats how im going to feel about the Vita at the end of the gen too.
