Apples and oranges bro.

In your opinion. PC is 1 system. Xbox One is 1 system. PS4 is 1 system.

PC is a type of system that's monopolized. Console is a type of system that's not. Just facts.

PC = 1 system

XBONE = 1 system

PS4 = 1 system

PC(1 system) has more sales and good/great games than any other 1 system.

Just the facts.

All the consoles are in direct competition with each other. Pc has no direct competition. With 5 consoles being supported the consolites are split 5 ways. It is utter folly to compare the pc vs one console. Simple logic that i guess only objective gamers could understand

Where did they say consoles are finished? That's right, they didn't. Stop making dumb misleading topic titles just to fish some clicks. It's really annoying.

What does one have to do with the other? Teh powah consoles used to be special (a gen or two ago), now they're not, doesn't mean they wont sell.

PS2 gen was stuffed to the brim with games you could only play on consoles, now more than 90% of games are fully multiplat.

Hardware-wise these consoles aren't even very good yet they're selling well so I don't see consoles going anywhere soon.

Fairly sure they'll sing a different tune should any of the big 3 approach them for the next set of consoles. Not that they need it (their profits have been great these past few years), though it's clear they are attacking their "rival", not so much the market itself (remember, AMD has it's hardware on all 3 machines for this gen).

They'll sing a different tune if the expected ROI is high enough. It was'nt with the current gen consoles, or in other words: Nvidia felt that they could spend their RnD money better, which seems to have been the case.

Consoles will never die. Sure, after this gen, they might lose more of the "hardcore" gamer group but the masses of COD and FIFA only gamers will continue to support the simplicity of consoles for many, many, generations.

What's wrong with having a hundred times more choices of better games, better performance, more diversity, more customization and less problems while saving money?

I wouldnt say console as we know them will never die. You can secure exclusivity deals only so long when your hardware, gamer base and price competitiveness are getting farther and farther behind. The next gen will have to put some magnificent trick out of its azz to retain it's gamers. The number of builds I helped people put together in the past year is starting to dwarf the 5 previous ones together.

Becase unless some drastic changes occur, no console is going to sell as much as ps1/ps2, net Sony as much profit as ps1/ps2 and MOST importantly get as many quality games as ps1/ps2

Ps1/ps2 was the golden age. You could even say it spilled over into the 360, but this is not. Games are few and far in between . LONG development cycles. Expensive development cycles. Developers slashing budgets, employees or sometimes closing down all together.. Developers reworking business model to not go under - pay extra for content, pay for sometimes shoddy online... Console makers lobbying for exclusive content/games/ timed exclusives

Yea consoles are doing ok and still are getting some great games.. Yes things could get better but this right now is not the golden age ffs its delusional to think so

@HalcyonScarlet: Not according to PC gamers. "Teh Poweh" as you say was always in the middle. For the PS3/360 it was a lack of ram that bottlenecked every thing. I remember arguing with a pc gamers who said his Gforce 2 would be forever better then a PS2. It's the same as it's always been but at the end of the day the consoles produced some of the best graphics for there time.

As for exclusives on the PS2 that had more to do with the fact that the PS2 had 70% market share and each console had a different architecture. Why build a multiplat when you can make all your money on one platform. If the PS4 continues to outsell the competition at this pace I expect it will get many more third party exclusives. If the numbers are close it will be like last gen.

@Couth_: You do realize the console industry is far more successful then the PS2 Era? And the PS4 could easily bring more profit then the PS1 maybe not the PS2. What people fail to realize is the PS2 Era was dominated by Sony. MS nor Nintendo could survive on home console sales alone. The PS2 era was a golden age for Sony's PS brand not console gaming. Sega pulled out of the hardware industry, Nintendo stayed alive due to the Game boy advance and MS lost Billions just to enter the market. That was hardly a golden age for the console industry as only one company was doing well.

I call it "Teh Powah" to highlight the between what MS and Sony promised with their marketing and what they actually delivered in performance this gen after eight years.

The PS2 had more exclusives for many different reasons, it also had vastly bigger support from both Japanese developers and Japanese consumers who seem to have limited interest in teh powah these days. I just don't think PS will be having that kind success and achievements again. MS has enough pull now and the PC will continue to get all those games.

MS encouraged the console/PC multiplatform releases and all popularity did for the PS3 was encourage an even wider spread of the games. It doesn't matter if the PS4 is 10m consoles ahead, the X1 is still selling well too and given the growing expense in game development, the chances of a publisher cutting off potential sales from other healthy platforms is slim.

@AM-Gamer: like I said if drastic changes occur then this gen can be very successful sure. But right now its not based on the state of games that are not coming out and based on how developers are doing poorly.. And lol if you are saying the ps2 was not the golden era then you are basically conceding that there was never a console golden age

By your logic Microsoft and Nintendo are doing terribly. Aside from a couple mega publishers like Activision many devs are doing terribly

Then are we saying there never was a golden age.. Nice argument

You're still latching on to sales. As long as the vast majority of console games is spread across many platforms, there'll be nothing golden about this era. At best, they'll just be good consoles to own.

Oh god this nonsense...do some research. Know why pc sales are slipping (and has nothing to do with gaming)? Because we don't buy prebuilds to play games, genius.

Not sure what that has to do with anything. You just said PC sales have been slipping which isn't true, PC hardware and game sales have been going up every single year for a few years now.

Way more than they used to. I know nobody with a name brand tower anymore, for those that own towers, and the PC shop i've worked at for years, even the average joe that doesnt game regularly came in to get advise or have us construct them a custom PC because name brand just isnt worth it anymore. It's far cheaper and easier today to design your own than get ripped off for poorer quality prebuilds. As for gaming, gaming grade hardware has record high sales and pc games also have record high sales and numbers of consumers, like steam and origin for example. All the data is stacked against "PC is dying" and you drank the koolaid

Do you often fight battles for other people? Is it because you assume he can't do it himself? It's a safe assumption to be sure, but it's still an assumption.

Like the % of computer owners who built their own machine themselves. That's an assumption. That's why I asked.

You are confusing pc owners with PC gamers. My 60 y-o father is a PC owner. He doesn't play games. PC hardware and games sales have skyrocketed. PC gaming has been breaking records year after year, be it concurrent players or multimillion dollar prize pools and whole stadiums filled for the eports scene.

Why are you being such a jerk? One would think that people who wear that tag should make more of an effort to be nice to users considering that it says right in the sidebar that GS mods are here to "help".

@HalcyonScarlet: Because sales do matter for the health of an industry. The big three own enough studios to have multiple quality exclusives on there platform. MS will probably continue to whore everything out on PC as they own Windows. But both Sony and Nintendo will have several great games a year come exclusively to there platform.

star citizen survey, 82 percent of their survey respondents volunteered they built their own pc. (n = between 10 & 20K) http://games.on.net/2013/04/star-citizen-being-built-for-pc-gamers-who-like-to-take-pride-in-building-their-own-pcs/

so i wouldn't accept declining sales of prebuilt PCs as any indication pc gaming is on the decline.

Sony was curb stomping in sales but every system was receiving tons of good games and publishers and DEVELOPERS were thriving.. There will never be a generation where all three console manufacturers thrive. If by your logic that's what constitutes a golden age then you are killing your own argument because nintendo and microsoft are doing poorly right now so this is not a golden age either. Nintendo is doing abysmal in sales and microsoft is doing terrible in proffits... Sony as a whole is doing poor financially and for probably the first time ever all 3 major console makers have to think legitimately about if it's even worth it to stay in the industry.. Publishers are axing budgets, developers are closing down and laying off tons of employees, many of the developers that are laid off are starting independent studios and making PC games because that's where they can create with minimal overhead and risk...Things have gotten worse for everyone since the ps2 era and there's no other way to slice that

maybe we have different definitions of what golden era is - i don't care to try to convince you anymore but by your own definition this is not one right now lol and you are just proving nvidia's point even more

I'm talking about JRPGs. I'm aware that PC is getting more and more of them now, but usually very old ports. I know most of you PC guys don't like 'em, but they are factors for those of us who do.

The Japanese gaming scene is pretty healthy on PC. It's not just old ports. A lot of indie games come from Japan nowadays that won't go to consoles.

Consoles are pretty barren when it comes to Japanese games nowadays. Far more so than PC is which is saying a lot.

There haven't been many Japanese PS4/XB1-only games released this year and last year, but starting in 2015 there'll be a lot more.

Persona 5, Bloodborne, FFXV (probably going to PC), KH3 (probably going to PC, it's using UE4 so I'd be shocked if it didn't), Deep Down, and Scalebound are ones I can list off the top of my head. Then there's stuff on the Wii U like Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Yeah, they'll come, but the releases are pretty sporadic, and not all focused on one platform. What is exclusive tends to be funded by the big 3.

I mean if you're into Japanese games, it's at least worth it to look at the PC now because it gets a consistent flow of indie games from Japan nowadays. And none of them require a beast PC which is always a good thing.

@HalcyonScarlet: So what was the golden era for you? When Sony was curb stomping everyone and other companies were struggling to remain in the industry? I mean there were alot of great games on the PS2 but we were one bad launch away from both Nintendo and MS leaving the industry.

Exactly, what is good for publishers and Sony, Ms and Nintendo has nothing to do with what is good for us. Even if a hypothetical console was selling poorly but had loads of good games to play, why would that effect me. I loved the N64. Yet it didn't sell great did it?

Great business doesn't automatically make a golden era.

@Couth_: If you are going to try to explain it to me at least get your facts right. Sony PS division is a major bright spot for the struggling company. If anything Sony would make there PS division one of their main segments as it is actually profitable. MS profitability is still higher then it was during the 360 launch and the X1 is selling well. It's only being criticized because it's getting stomped by the PS4. Regardless the X1 has still sold faster then either the 360 or original Xbox. The Wii U sales are poor but easily on par with the GC and are actually picking up. Nintendo posted a profit last quarter as well meaning right now each gaming division is profitable for all 3 company's which has never happened before.

Publishers closing down has nothing to do with consoles and more to do with the high cost of game development in a competitive market.

Golden era of consoles was when a majority of their games weren't just multiplats that are better on PC.

I think that's what Nvidia is getting at.

Even I fucking loved them back then.

When the majority of console games weren't spread out over so many platforms. I was excited about console gaming back then.

Also been competition.

Why are you being such a jerk? One would think that people who wear that tag should make more of an effort to be nice to users considering that it says right in the sidebar that GS mods are here to "help".

This is a DISCUSSION forum for everyone. If you want to have a private one on one conversation with someone without interruptions, maybe you should use the private messaging system.

Thanks for the tips.

We are here to help, and we are in System Wars. It's the spicy conversation that keeps us alive in here. Don't take things so personally. ;)

Hah! When you say it like that, I'm not qualified to judge you :) I'm not going to reitterate/elaborate on the responses you got so I don't really have much to add I guess.. Uhm... You're a... Dirty... Mac fanboi??

Seriously though, while PC sales may have been declining, hardware sales have not. Also, many scandinavian shops sell pre-assembled custom PCs and I'm sure that's a thing everywhere (if vendors want to sell hardware to the average consumer). Those do not count towards "PC sales" because that's not what they are.

I expect that someone noticed the "nerdy friend" factor ten years ago and decided to capitalize on it; and frankly I'm grateful. Sites like Komplett will sell you reasonable rigs with reasonable markups, unlike Dell's Alienware. That alone has made gaming PCs more accessable and personally, it's meant that I've spent a lot less time having to explain why people's computers are inadequate, and I think most tech nerds already lament that they don't charge by the hour or at all ;)
