[QUOTE="TrueReligion_"]Teuf, did you download the new 163.44 nVidia drivers?Teufelhuhn

I did just now, haven't installed them yet. I was running it on the 162 drivers last night.

Then I guess there's still hope for AA, since the drivers improve Bioshock compatibility. My demo download finishes in 2 hours.

I've played the Xbox360 version and the PC version in DirectX10 mode with my nVidia settings on quality. Resolution on PC was set at 1360x768.

I noticed the PC version definately has LESS jaggies than the Xbox version. This was one of the first things I noticed because I noticed the Xbox 360 version did look a little jagged on adges.

The PC version's fire effects, as I noticed at the start seemed to look a lot hotter, and looked like the fire was really blazing. The hot glowing embers of ash and the smoke seemed to look better and more detailed in DirectX10 on the PC.

Water didn't really seem to look much better, although the glow effects of light and reflections was clearer on the PC.

Load times on the PC seemed to be about a few seconds slower then the 360, but I think this was due to my craptacularly slow hard drive in my PC.

Textures on the PC were clearer, sharper and a little more detailed.

Framerates were higher on my PC, even in DirectX10 and on 1360x768 resolution, quality nVidia settings and everything set maximum.

As you go around the levels too there seemed to be more subtle smoke effects like lingering smoke that dissipated slowly on the PC.

Anyway if you want screens of it on the Xbox360 and the PC let me know. Videos too.

Have you played it in Dx9? If so, is there a noticeable difference between Dx9 and Dx10?

I have the 360 demo and that is all I need. I have the PC version of the game and I'm hoping I can play it tonight at midnight.

I keep hearing that, but I'm hoping 2K does the right thing and allows us to activate the game at midnight PST tonight. Considering my local Walmart and the majority of Walmarts around the country will be selling the 360 and PC versions tonight at midnight, I'd say 2K would be stupid if they waited. A lot of pissed off people that is for sure.

I've not played it in DirectX9 mode yet, but I do have it on Xbox360, so that's probably comparable. Oh and I should mention I play both Xbox360 and PC on the same HDTV so there's no difference there.

does anyone else think the Vita Chambers (real-time respawn system with no lost progress) make the game too easy? Maybe if there was a limited number of respawns per Chamber before you got a GAME OVER, it would offer more of a challenge, but the way it is sounds like it won't be a problem to beat at all.

Is it true that everytime you pass a Vita chamber the game saves for you? I think that's dumb. Cause what if I did something wrong or I need to go back and redo how I played a fight or whatever. If I accidentally pass it i'm screwed

Thats not how it works, atleast if its like what was in System Shock 2. It doesn't "save" you game, it merely makes a new spawn point.

Wait, what do you guys mean by the game being locked? How can they make it so you can't play it until 12am PST? I doubt it uses the internet, so couldn't you just turn your system clock up and unlock it?

I assume that is where you have the option to save. If they were just normal save points like the typewriters in Resident Evil, than everything would be okay in my book.

you do go back to the last one you passed, so you do have to win the fight or run from it, you cant just skip it. and like dead rising there is going to be more than you can do in 1 play thru, you will be replaying the game.

You have to activate the game through 2K servers otherwise you can't play it. I have had the PC version for a couple of days and since the servers aren't up yet, I can't play the game.

12 pm PST. as in, Noonish. and the game needs online verification to work, and the servers won't be up till then.

they can put it out if they have it, but are low wage employees going to care enough to make the effort. it's just more work for them and they dont make a cent more. but yeah i'm gonna go try too. they should have 24 hour gamestores. some blockbusters are open till 1 am so maybe i'll check there too.

Irrational's thoughts behind the Vita-chambers is that they wanted to make the game without frustrating the players.

I would actually prefer a game designed around the concept of forced saves - that is - none of this wonderful "oh, the consequences of my actions turned out to be horrific - let me reload" - it would make fights that much more interesting if you knew "if I accidently kill the Little Sister, there's no going back - there's no reload button - that's it!"

My first play through of Bioshock is going to be that way - straight through, no reloading - and hopefully no deaths. Makes a frightening game that much more on-edge when you take away the reset button.

If you want to give yourself a challenge, forget about grinding for achievements, and instead try and play through like it's real - you'll find yourself actually role-playing the game, instead of just meta-gaming it. After all, if you were really in Rapture, would you keep in a fight against a Big Daddy who was devastatingly more powerful than you - or would you run away?

I just called my local Walmart about availablity. They said it would be available for sale at midnight. Which was great news, until they said, "...if 3rd shift gets it on the shelves." There was then a long pause after I said, "Ok..." Regardless, I'm going to be heading there at that time. Wish me luck, I suppose. We'll see if it gets on the shelves or not :?

I think i can confirm a PS3 version coming out. I looked in the PC demo's ConfigINI file and found this inside it:

[Console]

;; Console (XBox360, PS3) specific settings

;; StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit:
;; If this is a positive number, then instead of using the fixed per-level
;; limits, the StreamingDynamic resource will use as much memory as is
;; available as long as the total memory allocated by the game is less than
;; the specified number. In other words, StreamingDynamic will grow and
;; shrink to fit to the available memory instead of being locked to a fixed
;; budget
StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit=500

EDIT: could just be something left over from UE3, but still a good find!

If you were in Rapture, had the ability to revive consequence-free aside from lost items and ammo, and knew about it, chances are you wouldn't run away.

[QUOTE="Mordred19"]does anyone else think the Vita Chambers (real-time respawn system with no lost progress) make the game too easy? Maybe if there was a limited number of respawns per Chamber before you got a GAME OVER, it would offer more of a challenge, but the way it is sounds like it won't be a problem to beat at all.Mordred19

yeha i wish they woulda scrapped that idea from the demo but oh well its a small gripe with an other wise amazing achievement in gaming history

true, but I would like a challenge when I play that amazing acheivement in gaming history in order to make the journey more satisfying.

well if u get good u wont be dying much anyways, i went like 17/20 hours my first playthrough when it came out in re4 w/o seeing any death animations yet

I imagine the pain of being beaten to death by a Big Daddy would be more than enough incentive to avoid impossible fights with them.

I'd find it funny if there was some plamid or tonic that affected your nervous system so that you can't feel physical pain, but otherwise yeah, I'd probably avoid a second Me with monkeywrench vs Big Daddy with drill deathmatch due to the pain.

I wonder what coming back from the dead would be like in real life though.

I think i can confirm a PS3 version coming out. I looked in the PC demo's ConfigINI file and found this inside it:

Halo2_Norad

I think that is a generic UE3 thing actually. That is there in other UE3 based games for 360 and PS3. Since UT3 is on PS3 that is why this code is there. Just simply cause PS3 is getting some UE3 based games. Thats all. Doesn't mean Bioshock is coming for PS3.

I imagine the Vita Chamber within a "real world" version of Bioshock would use some kind of regenerative plasmid to force your body to regrow, and provide enough energy to do so. It wouldn't really be "coming back from the dead" so much as something that could keep your brain alive while it repaired your body and organs.

I don't know, it would really involve getting into a lot of transhumanism to debate how a Vita Chamber works - I imagine a real Bioshock would have ones that could regenerate almost all body injury, but brain loss could result in permanent memory or skill loss - even if the brain was regrown. Perhaps, because your gene seed becomes so mutated from plasmids - the Vita Chamber's regrown neuroanatomy would be changed - undesirable consequences to the mind - hallucinations, schizophrenia, paranoia, rage, loss of intellect...

My own image of them within rapture would be something akin to the big "regeneration cyclinders" you see in a lot of sci-fi and anime - a character floating in a tube of liquid, regrowing their body - and I imagine (since all the denziens of rapture don't magically pop back to life after you kill them) that you have to be placed in it while still, well, reasonably repairable.

As is, the Vita Chamber is being given the supernatural ability to bring back the dead simply because they wanted to anchor a purely videogame function (saving / respawning) to something within the story-world they created.

-

As far as what it'd feel like to use a Vita Chamber? Well... imagine that achy, swollen, beat-up feeling that comes after some minor surgery - only over your entire body. I imagine given how painful the plasmid injection process is, that the pain of the Vita Chamber would be unimaginable.

WHAT THE HELL????? why still no review? i mean, is this some sort of sick game they're playing?

first they put up this little "bioshock launch center" thing and get everyone excited; then after waiting all weekend, they tell us the review's going up on monday, so i wait till 12 AM PST...STILL NO REVIEW, so i get pissed off and go to sleep in disappointment; then i wake up this morning, check the site, and lo and behold, STILL NO REVIEW; and now i check again, and once again, STILL NO REVIEW

i mean, seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people? what's taking them so long? is it because jeff's 360 RrOD'd on him? did his computer blow up and he lost everything on it, including the review he already wrote for bioshock so he's writing a new one? or better yet, is it because they are just lazy? or have a sick sense of humor and enjoy toying with their readerbase? or because they're trying to think up some pointless little icon to make for their new (and ridiculous) review system?

POST THE DAMN REVIEW ALREADY

gamestop dosn't post reviews before the release date. often they start playing the game on the release date for the review. it took a week to get forza2 reviewed. there are enough reviews out there you dont have to wait for the gs review. most in this thread aren't waiting for a gs review to buy it, myself included.
