and remember america is now officially in a recession, when this happens, consumers tend to make betting buying decisions... i think with Blu Ray in mind, ppl are buying the console that seems more future proof... ppl are not as ignorant as you think when their is a money issue. those who feel they can afford to make a luxury purchse like a gaming console, will most likely make a wise decision during this period in AmericaRage010101
actually, consumers tend to stop buying luxury items altogether in a recession
which is exactly what ANY console is
not buying that argument

Considering the above major retailers all now have ample X360 stock, it sure is funny how the X360 managed to be "supply-constrained" only in January.

It's worth noting as well that Wii is not available online from any of the above retailers.

I totally agree.
Supply constrained is complete BS hog-wash
[QUOTE="Javy03"][QUOTE="Pro_wrestler"][QUOTE="Amnesiacx"]All of those stupid "Lemmings" (sigh) who claimed that the PS3 was dead or doomed can eat a HUGE helping of crow. Seeing as how the PS3 has been owning the 360 in Europe and Japan for a long time now, it looks like the PS3 completely TROUNCED the 360 worldwide for the month of January. It's only a matter of time before the PS3 overtakes it. I can't wait to see this forum meltdown.Pro_wrestler
40K units is trounced?
Last month pretty much negated any "gain" the PS3 would have over the other 2 consoles(None of the Wii actually):P It would have to sustain a 40k lead for the rest of the year for this to be a helping to the PS3.
Wrong, you forget worldwide sales is what matters. Even with the 360's "amazing" Holiday NA sales it still was outsold overall by the PS3 for 07. Its main fanbase is in NA and if it gets beat by the PS3 there its overall lead will shrink dramatically.
All I heard was "blah blah blah" cause I heard it all before. How many price cuts and variant changes/cancellations did the PS3 have? How many people are purchasing it for gaming when it makes a cheap high-end blu-ray player? We don't know but looking at the top 10 games list month-month that the PS3 treads ever so lightly on can only assume that people are watching movies rather than playing games..
Yes the 360 has been on the market longer but it also went 16 months without a price drop in contrast the PS3 had one in under a year, it's always a double edged sword with people on system wars. Pity!

thats why i said those who can afford to or choose to make a "luxury purchase like a gaming console". what im trying to say is, they're gonna put more thought into it during a period where ppl are not as eager to throw their money around.
One month for PS3 over 360, wupty doo. Not to mention, as Dreams pointed out, Blu-ray all but won in January. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy it's selling but this is nothing to celebrate over.Ibacai
agreed. I'm curious to see what it turns out to be next month

Regardless of the economic state in the United States, Americans will continue to purchase video game products. The recession of the early 1990s did not severely affect video game sales, so did the post Sept. 11th period.

Making up excuses doesn't nullify the fact that the 360 was outsold. That would be like the axis of evil making excuses for their lose. axis: you only won because you had more people on your side! I think I get the point quite well actually...it can outsell it for the rest of the year by 40k and it still wont make up the difference of 6mln to call it "a victory" but if you want a time to shine go ahead, don't let me rain on your parade:P

I think the big thing about this is that......the PS3 has joined the party. Past months it was always relegated to third and now all the "OH 2008 is the year of the PS3" may be showing truth.
Anyone can say try and knock it down, but it's an accomplishment nonetheless. PS3 has officially arrived? Yeah, probably.

rain on my parade all you want. Sony still has Europe and Japan where they outsell the 360 consistently.didn't see that coming. can it continue?CaseyWegner
Just wait.

Yeah like buying a console that's $200 more then the other with less exclusives.
People saying that Blu-ray will make software sales poor, brings us back 6-7 years ago when everyone was saying the same about PS2 being a DVD player.Yet PS3 has a 5-1 game ratio and PS2 had a high game to system ratio it never affected game sales.
Even people who buy PS3 for a blu-ray player is going to end up buying some games.
WII - 274,000 PS3 - 270,000 PS2 - 265,000 NDS - 252,000 PSP - 230,000 360 - 229,000  Now that the 360 is out of the way it's only a matter of time until the wii fad ends and sony is back on top again. My inner cow is awakening.jack_russel
Yes... 41 000 units more a month for the ps3 over the 360 x 12 months = not gonna catch up to anything anytime soon. You're a blind cow my friend.

If it continues to get out sold in the US, then the 360 lead is gonna be gone sooner then expected because we all know the 360 is dead in Japan.
Disappointing sales all across the board. X360 deffinitely had shortages regardless of it being available everywhere you went throughout January. Also totally ignoring the fact that we only here about the "shortage" a day before NPD. PS3 is still a glorified BR player with no games whatsoever so even though it sold more we know they won't be using it for anything more tha a door stop // Damage Control
:D
Wow! PS3 outsold the 360! I thought it would be more like they wer tied, but wow PS3 is making a HUGE comeback! 2008 = PS3's year!
EDIT: Holy!!?!?!? Wii only outsold the PS3 by 4000!?!? Oh My... The sleeping Dragon is waking up and it wants its Throne Back!EVOLV3
Don't worry next month the dragon will go back to sleeping.
One month is good, but next month could be a differnt story, next month the 360 could return to out selling the PS3.
I dont see what the big surprise is.xTHExJUICEx
Exactly. Blu ray won big support big time and the 360 and Wii had shortages last month, no suprise at all. Now the biggest suprise if this maintains from month to month until the 10 year life cycle.

I contributed, I bought a PS3 in January. Sorry Lems, I had to do it for Blu-ray. It is a great system though, and I am glad to see it finally pulling some decent numbers here in the states.
I still have my 360 though, and I plan on playing RB6v2 and GeOW2 on it very soon.

It takes a special kind of logic to see one month of stronger sales and to in turn announce the downfall of all machines to have sold fewer units, even if by an insignificant margin.
If it continues to get out sold in the US, then the 360 lead is gonna be gone sooner then expected because we all know the 360 is dead in Japan.

Honestly, this is unbelievable. The wii has annihilated everything month after month after month; ONE month, all three sell horribly, but because the PS3's sales are bad to a lesser degree than the others, it's ushering in the end of the xbox?
Come on guys.
Cool, looks like it's gonna be a good year for the PS3.
I thought it'd beat the 360... but coming so close to beating the Wii is pretty interesting, and no big releases either. Wonder what's gonna happen when games like MGSIV arrive this year.
