look at this research here :-

http://www.next-gen.biz/news/survey-blu-ray-primarily-driving-ps3-purchase-intent

According to this research, Blu-ray IS the primary reason to purchase a PS3, most interesting point of the article? You will see "specific games", ie exclusives or multiplats, rank 10th on the list as a reason to buy, so much for your theory eh?

sts106mat

Dude did you even read pass the line you quote.? Nielsen gathered its data over a three week period surrounding the launch of God Of War III by interviewing over 700 active gamers that didn't own a PS3 but said they were definitely or probably interested in buying one. That is Funny because that article was made around GOW3 release to 700 people lol.Who would want to buy a PS3 to play Blu-ray movies, when that survey was made on February 2010 last year,at a time where the PS3 was $299,and stand alone Blu-ray players less than $199. Also how 700 people represent millions of people.? When i posted a survey here about RROD which was made to 5,000 people way more than 700 people dismiss it how come.? 5,000 was to small but 700 is ok.?

You didn't read the article!, Bluray was the attractive feature that people gave when asked about buying a PS3, not exclusives, thats all i was pointing out.

say what you like, his "theory" is not backed up by any survey. All i did was show that in one survey "the exclusives" were not the major factor in determing if people buy a PS3. he is wrong, he has basically agreed since, that exclusives aren't the number one reason. it might be the number one reason for him, he can believe it is for everyone if he wants. Bluray functionality was the main reason 700 people gave when asked to rank the most attractive things about buying a PS3.

700 people isn't a lot of course, it was only posted as information that contradicts what cadbury was saying, "exclusives are the reason people buy a console" but then he hasn't shown any surveys that show exclusives are the main reason has he?

The exclusives were not a factor for 700 people who did not own a PS3 shocker there dude, since most people who are interested in exclusives are mostly the first to jump on generations, then the casual all around player jump.

Wow, you need to just give it up. Like others have said, Sony's exclusives doesn't have very much appeal & doesn't sell in high numbers like Mario, Halo, etc., except for GT 5. And the PS brand is no longer very hot like it used to be back in the days of the PS1 & the PS2.

PS3 is at 51 million and 360 53.6 million, no?

blue_hazy_basic

PS3 at 50 mil as of now and 360 at 53.6 mil at end of MS's Q3 according to link.

(so no is correct to your question)

No... PS3 at 50 million as of the end of their q4, and 360 at 53.6 as of end of their q3, both of which happen to be the Jan-Mar quarter. So... you're both wrong.

cadbury said the major factor people consider when buying a console is exclusives, i showed him that he is wrong, you keep flogging that dead horse. obviously there are some people who buy because of an exclusive, however , as i have said like six times now :- IT IS NOT THE MAIN FACTOR,. crikey

You showed me a survey which we have no idea how well was conducted, and showed a whopping 0.03% in favour of blu-ray over library. Not to mention it didn't even include 'exclusives' specifically as one option.
Would you like me to do some statistical calculations to prove that this isn't a significant difference?
I can't prove myself to be right. I just strongly feel that exclusives matter. You can't exactly prove me wrong and say it's not the main factor, either.

I did buy ALL my consoles for their exclusives-360 for Gears, and Halo3, Ps3 for Uncharted and R&C and Wii(lol) for Wii Sports. I guess that old horse has some life left in him, eh?

OP/link is wrong. MS's fiscal report for Jan-Mar, which came out in April, has 53.6 million 360's sold. Sony's fiscal report for Jan-Mar, which came out a few days ago, has 50 million sold. 53.6 million 360's and 50 million PS3s are both from the end of March. Anyone claiming the 53.6 million was from January is uninformed.

Brand, price, word of mouth, promotion, manufacturing availability/capacity, features/capabilities, reliability...the list goes on. First mover status sometimes gives you an advantage, sometimes second or later mover provides more advantage. Regardless, time is only one factor in success. This is pretty much true for all consumer products.

Yes the Xbox 360 is ahead. 53.4 million Consoles sold Vs 50.1 Million PS3 consoles sold. But I have both an Xbox 360 and PS3. So who ever wins the Console sales race. Or Console "War". I can be on the winning side. Go Xbox 360! Go Playstation 3!, Xbox 360 is the best!, Playstation 3 is the best!

Yep at this time the Xbox 360 is ahead of the PS3. By 3.3 million consoles as of May 27th 2011. So the War is still being decided until the Xbox 3 and PS4 arrive. This is a very close console race since SNES VS Genesis.

Since this is System wars. Then 3.3 million ish is a big deal in the race for second place....

Because it's a Xbox lol. I would of never thought Xbox would outsell a Playstation console. Mainly because the brand name of SONY, Playstation, the major success of the PS1 and huge success of the PS2.

Not to mention its only $300 now with a blu-ray player and an exclusive lineup that destroys Xbox.

I honestly can't believe it's been this long and the Triple hasn't passed it yet. It's not a big deal as SW makes it out to be though.

For the 360 for sure, since the xbox 360 is over 5 and a half years and still alive,so when the PS3 is 5-5 years it will be very alive ending in the last after been first is worst ask sega.

Weird how the PS2 launched after the Dreamcast by a year but had no problems surpassing. I guess the PS3 is not as good as the PS2 was, but that is something 75% of PS2 owners already knew.

The PS2 wasn't $600 dollars and Sega did no had enough money to buy exclusives left and right, very different situations here.

That is the funny part how much it has changed and how much of the market Sony has lost

Last gen

Nintendo- 22 million

Microsoft - 24 million

Sony- 120 million

This gen has been brutal for Sony. To make it worse how many billions the PS3 has cost Sony.

But probably will end 2nd even that they release a console at $600 dollars, either way is fighting for scraps since Nintendo won, even that some people pretend they don't exits, not talking about you in special, but many here talk like if the xbox 360 and PS3 were fighting for first place.

In fact, they were losing more money off of PS3 than what they were making off of the PS2. Not to mention that they've lost about 70% of the marketshare to the 360, lost most of the sales to the Wii, & that they've blown all of their profits that they made off of both PS1 & PS2 on the PS3.

No matter how anyone tries to spin it, the PS3 has been a disaster for Sony this gen.

No matter how anyone tries to spin it, the PS3 has been a disaster for Sony this gen.

do you have a link for that?... that's ok.. I know the answer to that :P

Is this what you wanted a link for?

Sony has lost more on the PS3 then the PS2 has made.

Or are you talking about losing market share? If so the PS2 had almost 3 times more then the Xbox and Gamecube COMBINED at the start of this gen but now the PS3 is 3.6 million in last place. The 360 and Wii greatly increased the market shares for their companies. The funny part how the PS2 has 150+ million now and just further proof that people owning a PS2 does not mean buying a PS3.

Year ahead with 3.6m lead.... I'm sure MS is busting out the bubbly

Sony had like 70% last gen and now they have gone first to last!

And yet they have the best exclusives this gen, but hey have fun with the sales.

[QUOTE="drakekratos"]360 has a total of 18month head start over PS3, so it SHOULD have more sales. themyth01

An XBOX having more sales than a Playstation, ludicrous.

Haha. Excellent. It has been a while since I've seen that graph, tis a shame since I always get a good laugh.

An XBOX having more sales than a Playstation, ludicrous.

And yet, it took Sony 4 & a half years just for them to even reach 50 million owners. They had no problems reaching over 50 million owners in less than 4 1/2 years with both the PS1 & the PS2, & neither did Nintendo with the Wii. And for them to go from 150+ million PS2 owners to now just 50+ million PS3 owners is quite embarassing.

In Microsoft's case, I say that they've been more successful for this gen than last gen, considering that they went from having 24 million Xbox owners to now 54+ million 360 owners, have been making profits since '07 or '08, & have gotten more 3rd party support than ever before.

That is the funny part how much it has changed and how much of the market Sony has lost

Last gen

Nintendo- 22 million

Microsoft - 24 million

Sony- 150+ million

and it's quite clearly to everyone that it's nobody's fault but sony's own.

They reached 50mil 9 months faster than MS and the 360... Not to mention that not only was the PS3 an extremely expensive console when it launched, but the economy has been rough since the consoles release. A lot of people just couldn't afford it. And if you're going to compare the PS3s sales to the PS2 sales at the 11 year mark, you might actually want to wait for the ps3 to turn 11 before you start getting too excited ;) You also don't seem to realise that the gaming industry and the competition within has actually change drastically since the ps1/ps2 days. But yeah, keep telling yourself whatever makes you sleep at night.

Please. The PS3 won't even reach those numbers at all. The popularity of the PS brand has been diminished & it's not as popular as it used to be. If it took them this long just to reach 50 million owners, then imagine how long it's going to take to reach 100 million. Besides, people are going to be paying more attention to Project Cafe over PS3 starting at this E3, & when it releases worldwide next year.

So by the time the ps3 is 5-5 and a half years old it will finally outsell the 360? Thats pretty bad...

kuu2

Considering the 360 had a year head start? I don't think so. Why would it EVER outsell something that had a YEAR head start? hmmmm

Weird how the PS2 launched after the Dreamcast by a year but had no problems surpassing. I guess the PS3 is not as good as the PS2 was, but that is something 75% of PS2 owners already knew.

Considering the PS3 launched at $600, I think it's doing great. :)

Orly? From where I'm standing, Sony's suport for the PS3 is standing strong and last year they sold a record amount of ps3s ;) I'd say they're nicely on track to sell an admirable amount of consoles.

If the support of PS3 is truly strong, why hasn't it surpassed the Wii in sales yet? Where are those other 100 million owners, hmmm?
