It depends on the developers, but they can a) use supersampling rendering the game at higher resolution then scaling it down to 1080p resulting in better image than standard 1080p b) higher framerate or some kind of combination of both

The purpose for PC's Nvidia G-Sync and AMD/Display Port Free-Sync is to reduce the 60 fps requirments. The very existence for G-Sync and Free-Sync shows the majority of PCs also has problems with locked 60 fps.

It's also to get rid of the input latency that comes with vsync and screen tearing w/o vsync

So you pay for better hardware with the PS "Pro", but you can't enjoy its best performance all the time, because Sony want parity with the regular ageing PS4? So if you have to game in multiplayer at 30 fps, what is so "Pro" about this?

Our PC setups are a minority and PS4 Pro is addressing mainstream numbers.

There's 7.5 million install base for >= $350 priced PC GPU after about 3 years.

At 2560x1440p, Doom Vulcan (with AMD's NVAPI style hit-the-metal shader optimizations) with RX-470 slightly ahead of GTX 106.

For Doom 2016, ID Software has applied vendor specific optimizations for both NVidia and AMD GPUs.

PS; Nvidia didn't reveal their existing NVAPI's hit-the-metal features after AMD created their own version in 2016. Note why Nvidia GPUs has very small gain in DX12.

Although I found all of this a bit underwhelming, I'm in the same boat as you. If PS4 Pro offers 60 fps and 1080p for most, if not all, titles...I'm down. Couldn't care less about 4k gaming and VR right now.

Pro is more likely to have (some) native 4K games than the Xbone S (which just upscales games to 4K).

They kept going on about 4k resolution OR better frame rates and effects.

Multiplayer wont have better frame rate or anything that can give pro players benifit of poor :) players

Sounds like its limited from the start.

Some of the games looked great and I still say its great buy for players that dont have a PS4. But doesnt have the same feel as the scorpio for wow factor.

Now that we know the official specs, i wonder if MS will downgrade their console so the price tag is nowhere near $600. I mean, even if they do downgrade the console, they can still brag about being the most powerful so what's the point of offering peak performance when even a downgraded version will be more powerful than the crappy Pro?

Scorpio is a just a refine(tock cycle) version of Polaris 10 i.e. 1300 Mhz 36 CU yields about 6 TFLOPS.

RX-470, RX-480 and PS4 Neo is the tick cycle.

Scorpio is similar to NEO Option B (5.5 TFLOPS GPU, new CPU) which is priced around $499.

During 2017, there's a high probability for RX-480 refresh as the RX-580 or RX-485

I don't know if it has been posted but DF spent some time with the Pro and here are their impressions. They seem to have been quite impressed by the performance even though the platform is clearly not meant for native 4K output. Also TLoU in 4K? Yes, please.

The thing is that even though not every title will be native 4K, some games will actually achieve that resolution natively. This will not be the case with the Xbox one as it can barely do native 1080p. Also games will not always be upscaled from 1080p on PS4 Pro. They could render at 1800p and then upscaled from there.

@GameboyTroy: Yup, just HDR gaming. People are confusing 4K playback with 4K gaming. Sure the PS4 won't play every title in native 4K, but there will be titles that do. And even if they don't, they're being upscaled from a higher resolution than 1080p (or 720-900p for some Xbox One games).

Yes. Games should be rendered at full 1080p, no upscaling. Framerates will improve, but it's still up to developers to actually take advantage. They could choose to keep a game at 30fps on both, for example. It's also future proofed somewhat. Eventually you might get a 4K TV with HDR when the price comes down to where most 1080p tvs are now. You'll be set once you get one.

I don't have a 4k tv, but I still pre-ordered the Pro.

So the Pro coming out in Nov killed the sales of the slim? According to cows why would you buy the slim at $299 when you could get the Pro for $100 more 2 months later?

Slim will be that PS4 for casual players who just want to play games and don't really care much about performance and visuals. And who don't plan on taking advantage of HDR and 4K in the near future. It's for those who haven't made the jump into the gen yet.

System Wars is a reality distortion vortex where more people voted for Microsoft having the biggest impact in gaming over Nintendo and Sony. It's very clear this place was left to the birds some while back. Forgive my weak poker analogy, MS was forced to either fold or put their cards on the table, Sony with the upper hand and stacks of chips chose to pass and let MS do the betting. Just because MS may have won a hand doesn't mean they've won the game. Sony has a massive lead in marketshare again, better games and still has a few exclusives which the XBox doesn't. Everyone gazing into their crystal balls for the next few years and announcing winners and losers are most likely going to be wrong.

The fact remains, regardless of how the sales play out, Sony decided not to increase the overall value of it's new consoles to the end users, especially those with 4K HDTVs.. that's the true take away here..

If you already have a PS4, why buy the PS4 Slim?.. they've offered you literally no reason to and actually took away a hardware feature like optical out.. If I already had a 4KTV, upgrading my current Xbox One to an Xbox One S would be a no-brainer.. the same simply cant be said for the PS4 Slim..

And how about the PS4 Pro?.. If you're looking to get a PS4 Pro to compliment your new 4K HDTV and you're looking to show off how awesome those Ultra HD Bluray movies look on your new display, well sorry.. Sony decided that you don't need that option on a "premium 4K console" and you're stuck trying to stream 4K movies or maybe spend another $400 on a standalone UHD player.. I mean, forget adding value to your product, right?.. especially when the competition is packaging the same 4K upscaling and HDR support you're boasting about along with a UHD disc drive for $100 cheaper.. I guess Sony knows that people like you will rejoice regardless as long as the PS4 Pro is topping the Amazon charts..

the bottomline is this: I'm a consumer, not a shareholder.. When the PS3 was getting killed in sales, I didn't care because I saw the added value of having a built-in Bluray player in my console for my new HDTV.. While the Xbox One is getting killed in sales currently, I don't care because the console is by far a more fully-featured all-in-one entertainment box when compared to the PS4 and that trend looks to be continuing with the Xbox One S revision.. Sales don't matter to me and they shouldn't matter to you either.. what should matter to you is what you're unboxing on your living room floor.. And from what we saw at the briefing, Sony decided to skimp on the value in favor of hoping the Sony Defense Force will continue to sing their praises as long as their sales momentum keeps pace..

And for the record, I'm in no way saying that the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro are bad products.. I'm simply echoing the sentiment of all true consumers in terms of the baffling decision Sony has made to not include Ultra HD Bluray playback on either of those devices.. it's absurd and they are rightfully being called out on it..
