What a wild bunch of lemmings, lol. All kidding aside, this will no doubt boost holiday sales. By how much and for how long it lasts is yet to be determined. That said, I sure as hell have no interest in it.

[QUOTE="ohthemanatee"] the Ps3 really is just a glorified NES
Heirren
And that's the way it should be. The NES was one of the best consoles ever made, with an INCREDIBLE library. I'm glad Sony is basing the PS3 off one of the best. Kinect on the other hand...
meh, I liked the master system better
Kinectimals uses the voice input and as far as the 3D plane goes every game uses it, the same goes for the last two points I made[QUOTE="Dahaka-UK"] That all looks nice on paper but again we've seen nothing gameplay wise to back it upohthemanatee
just the same old microsoft employees making fools outta themselves and mass cheers on Opera. I'm going to disregard the voice input because at the end of the day it's just a bloody microphone, eye toy on the ps3 has one of those to. So until Kinect actually shows anything other than people standing on the spot, jumping and arm flailing. It really is just a glorified EyeToy.Dahaka-UK
so i'm just going to diregard the internet and 3D gaming because it's all ready just technobable. the Ps3 really is just a glorified NES
You can disregard those things all you want. I don't even know why you made that silly PS3=NES comparrison in the first place. Kinect has failed to show anything gameplay related that can't be done with PS EyeToy. FACT.bowling games is one that comes to mind that pseye cant do.... cant have a bowling game with 2d motion tracking. FACT.
honestly the pseye can do very little of what kinect can do. If you dont understand the difference between 2d and 3d motion tracking, then why were you saying it was ridiculous when he was comparing 2d and 3d video game systems?
It's ridiculous because the leap in tech and software is just so frikkin massive you can't possibly consider those 2 consoles to be the same at all, 2D to 3D is just one mere difference. I understand Kinect is an improvement over the EyeToy but I wouldn't say it's a massive one. At the end of the day PS EyeToy was just a big failure anyway and Kinect is just trying to mimick a failure. It's just not going to work unless of course they advertise it on Opera and give it out for free thus selling millions.. Oh wait..bowling games is one that comes to mind that pseye cant do.... cant have a bowling game with 2d motion tracking. FACT.

Not really. If we're going to use more current tech, Kinect is actually inferior to PSeye in some ways while having no wand and having the "innovative" parts of it yet to be used (in a way that the PSeye couldnt) so far.
I'm by no means a motion controll fan but Kinect is crap, moreso than Move and the Wiimote.
so you need the PS eye, move and that secondary move thingy to compare it to kinect? Not really. Powerglove failed because it was pretty much a piece of crap whereas I'm guessing the EyeToy failed because the tech just wasn't good enough and the idea of playing a game with no physical controller in hand is just so primitive. I feel the same way about Kinect. I heard it can't even track your damn fingers and the camera can't even detect grey clothing. Actually the technology behind kinect and pseye is incredibly different. Kinect maps objects in a 3d space whereas pseye only compares video against a known background.
maybe you dont quite understand the underlying technology behind the 2, but the way they are determining input is vastly different. Kinect actually is a rather large leap in technology.

good thing that Kinect is more advanced than the eyetoy then
I will not give in and buy a stupid Kinnect. My video game buying has to draw a line somewhere. I have 2 PS3's, a wii and a 360 slim 250gb. I also bought the move stuff but I won't go any further and pay for something I will use once and then only when people come over to my condo to use. I already have my Wii for that. LOL.
i can imagine those housevives going home trying to plug kinect directly to the the tv without pluging the 360
bowling games is one that comes to mind that pseye cant do.... cant have a bowling game with 2d motion tracking. FACT.markinthedark
Technically true, but you also can't do a _good_ bowling game when you can't see if a player is twisting his wrist. Bowling without spin isn't bowling and doing weird alternative gestures to control spin isn't much better either. Actually, if you don't mind a bigger delay, you could do it in 2D. The arm might be 2D, but even from the projection ("growing" downwards then "shrinking", certain amount of sideways motion) you can get enough info to figure out speed and direction (would be much easier to trick, though).
For the time being the most accurate and "realistic" solution for bowling is a controller approach, since all the acceleration and rotation applied to the ball can be 1:1 measured from sensor data (and a camera helps knowing _where_ you are throwing that thing). I think this is true for most simulated activities where you usually interact with objects. It's almost funny how Kinect is going with a Harry Potter and a Star Wars game. Wait.. waving a _wand_ around? Fighting with a beam of light coming from a cylindrical object? Obvious choice for the one motion control device where you DON'T hold just that in your hand. Imagine sword fighting with a completely stiff wrist.
Also, seeing how even a commercial has people playing sideways for archery on Kinect is a big warning sign that depth might not be working too well. Or it's a workaround because your other arm might be hidden. Another factor with Kinect: if it can't be seen there is no fallback. I also remember people talking about boost not always triggering in Joy Ride, another hint that depth isn't working too well when your arms are in front of your body. If that part turns out to only work half of the time, it WOULD be just a really fancy and overcomplicated EyeToy 2.5D.
Well, thanks to the review embargo we won't find out until Nov. and after embarassingly failing live on TV it's possible we won't see anything but commercials on the upcoming TV appearances.
honestly the pseye can do very little of what kinect can do.
The difference isn't that huge. As hardware goes the RGB cam and mic array are actually slightly superior. 2D let's you detect edges and a players outline, 3D let's you determine his "front surface". The first is only workable as long as a player faces the camera and has his arms sideways or.. holds some kind of controller for which you can determine Z... oh wait. For the second it will be interesting how many issues with overlapping limbs they have fixed by the time it comes out. Some avatar glitches don't look like they even consider natural joint constraints (something I'd expect from any rag doll implementation these days). That would easily help with "is he crossing his arms of are they both broken and at really weird angles?".
Keep in mind that the camera as such only gives you a strange image with color coded depth. The entire "figuring out joints for skeletal animations" is purely software based. A limited version of that could be done with 2D images as well. Kung Fu Live almost goes there (it only puts bounding boxes around your limbs, ironically deriving joints from that wouldn't be a big deal). Too bad that "fighting" sideways is just about as awkward as shooting a bow sideways.
Well, eventually I wouldn't be surprised if MS adds a special "handheld sensor pack" (or at least a "split" controller for each hand) and Sony releases a "depth add-on" for the camera. Wonder what the PrimeSense camera would cost with its reference specs... or how annoyed the developers must be that their first "big outing" is with such a crippled version of their technology.
i can imagine those housevives going home trying to plug kinect directly to the the tv without pluging the 360
da_illest101
They got a 360 too but honestly I would have no hard time believing that many of those inexperienced housewives will do so. I imagine some of them won't even use it and just give it away or to their kids or keep it collecting dust in a closet.
If one of those women/dudes (there are some if you look hard enough) don't make it into an issue of Collegehumor's Parents don't understand segment I will be a little surprised for a few reasons.
Anyways, if PS3 wants to counter this they need to get Move on the Conan show, they could also try Jay Leno but the Tonight Show audience is probably worse off than Oprah's when it comes to being gamer savvy.

I didn't know eye toy could see even with the lights turn off...hell I don't think even move can do that
I didn't know that eye toy can predict what you next likely movement will be so that the game doesn't go ape**** when someone gets in front of the camera for a ffew seconds
EDIT: Oh right I forgot, I should add "FACT!" to my post because it adds so much credibility when I post "FACT!" on it
Well i did not know the the nes could play movies, surf the net, upload videos, store music and play it,allow bluetooth connections and a ton of other things, the difference here is that no one claimed the PS3 was new and revolutionary console, that is what has been claim of Kinect, the PS3 is a more advance version of the Nes just like Kinect is a more advance version of the Eye Toy and the PS3 eye which do has voice imput.
The only difference is tha before sony what camera were you using to play eye toy kind of games.? Because before the nes i was playing other consoles.

gamer-adam1
or if kinect came from Sony, everyone where would love it
Uh, if that were true the Ps Eye would still be getting games, because gamers would be supporting it. The Ps Eye games are the same as the Kinect games, barely interactive and boring. This is the problem with the interface, and how good the tech is going to matter little.

you're right, It would have been much more accurate if I had compared the PS3 to the Atari 2600
I dont understand how anyone on system wars can defend Kinect. The little bit they have actually shown is laughable at best, there is a review embargo on it until it releases, and they are spending 500 mil to advertise it. If the thing was as great as MS wants you to believe wouldnt they:
1-not have to spend half a billion to market it? I mean if the tech was so great it should sell itself with regular commercials not plugs on opera and other celebrity endorsements.
2-get it out to reviewers early (sony did) so they can start creating a positive buzz around it
3-release any footage at all thats actually good and/or not totally fake with actors trying to mimic what the character on the screen is doing.
All these things throw up alot of red flags to me. It reminds me of when a movie studio doesnt let critics get an advanced screening when they know the movie will probably be bombed. So either the tech is nothing like they are toting it as and are afraid to show it, or they just want to waste half a billion on pointless plug ins and endorsements for a product that should sell well on its own technological merits.
