PC Advisor: Is The PS3 Finally The World's Best Console?

It's more than just a games machine

Sony launched the PlayStation 3 (PS3) a year and a half ago, but Nintendo and Microsoft, with the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 respectively, appear to have the bragging rights in the console market.

However we don't think the PS3 is dead just yet. Here's five reasons why we think you should take another look at the PS3 if you're a home gaming console fan, or if you're looking for a treat for your dad on Father's Day.

Finally, some good games for the PS3

It does take some time for video game makers to come out with games that make you go 'wow'. With the exception of a few games (such as Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction), the PS3 hasn't had that game that inspires people to rush out and buy the console.

Most of the 'must have' games over the past year have been available on one or other two systems, including games like Guitar Hero III, Rock Band and Call of Duty 4. Even Grand Theft Auto IV is available on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

But the exclusive release of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue means that if you're a fan of this racing series, you'll have to buy a PS3 in order to play it. With more franchise games launching soon (including Metal Gear Solid 4, the next Final Fantasy chapter and eventually God of War 3), there are more opportunities for gamers to rediscover the technology advantages of the PS3 over the other systems. Couple the games with the new DualShock 3 controller (which incorporates both rumble and SIXAXIS motion sensitivity technology), and you have a gaming experience with the potential to exceed anything else on the market.

true. quality and quantity of game do. the ps3 only has one good game and plenty of crappy ones. don't get me wrong, the 360 has its share of flops and crappy titles (blue dragon and bullet witch come to mind) but the fact is the 360 has more games that obtain higher scores and has features that sony is still trying to implement on the ps3.

The ps3 is decent, but all things considered its still probably the third best console option. And this is coming from somone who has all 3 systems.

no. the ps3 has one good game, a few decent ones, but mostly garbage. it's sony's fault they chose to build a blu-ray player with gaming capabilities and not vice-versa.

Look, I'll agree that it's mostly a superb blu-ray player with minimal gaming capabilities (at the moment). However, like the article said, there's many franchises that's gonna drop exclusively on PS3. So whether you like it or not, it's the only choice if you like God of War, Tekken, FF, Twisted Metal, MGS4, Wipeout, Yakuza, Gran Turismo, etc. I'll bet you that MOST out of ALL the gamers in the world are anxiously awaiting a few of these franchises to hit up PS3 more than anything in the competition.

It just happens to be the best blu-ray player on the market now. As far as gaming capabilities and titles, it'll grow with time. Starting now, in fact. Eventually matching and possibly besting the 360. A machine with the best of both worlds in the end.

i'll believe it when i see it, which is likely never. no matter how good mgs4 is - it isn't a game for everyone, it has ZERO universal appeal, just like most of the other games you listed :D enjoy them, I sure don't.

GeOW, GeOW 2, Halo 3, Alan Wake Star Ocean 4, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Left for Dead.

The thing that made the PS2 so great wasn't a silly mowas the fact that it pretty much had something for everyone. Fighters, Brawlers, RPGs, Shooters, Platformers, etc etc. By contrast the the PS3 is still rather dry in many areas. no kidding, but every silly cow on these forums thinks everythings ok because the ONE game they knew would do something did something. it's gonna take a hell of a lot more than that to pick the PS3 up off the floor IMO.

HS was fun, but it - like Uncharted - SCREAM rental. both I beat with my friend in one sitting, both he bought and regrets as neither have any replay value.

free online > pay to play also please don't use just the games as the reason why ps3 is not better then 360. it's also the value and reliabilty in the console plus all the extras you get for free like blu ray and wifi. what makes it sooo sweet is that the ps3 now has an amazing lineup of games. ps3 > 360 by a mile.-Renegade

as for the "free blu-ray and wifi". they're not free. you have to pay for the console to get them. the ps3 doesn't have an amazing line up of games. it only has one good game and tons of filler crap until another good game comes out. that could take months or years.

no. mgs is a movie with a few minutes of gameplay between cutscenes. ff, most gamers outside of japan couldn't care less about it (myself included). gran turismo...i'll give you that one but polyphony needs to make the game more realistic, ie damage, car crashes, true to life physics not bumper car physics, fully 3d environments, not just bitmap images in the background.

that or they just don't exist. 90 to 95% of games this gen will be multiplat. (98% for the 360 because most end up going to the pc anyway). you can blame that on rising dev costs.

I disagree. PS3 has tons of games in all genres it's that people choose to overlook them. The only area we could see real improvement is in MMOs.

the ps3 has a few games in most genres but mostly they are concentrated in shooters and sports (like the xbox last gen). even if the ps3 and 360 get more mmo's, most mmo players will continue to play WoW and Second Life. why? because they're casual friendly and casuals aren't as big on gaming as we are.

negative. blu-ray movies are a niche. HD gaming is the way of the future. this gen is merely a stepping stone for HD gaming which will be vastly superior next gen.

Yes. Forza Killed Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Final Fantasy is going downhill, and I said that because I count quality, not sales, and I didn't even say Ninja Gaiden 2 so I am not sure where you got that from...

A flop doesn't mean it's not considered a good game, just that the score didn't live up to the hype.

and the game didn't live up to the hype because it was

a) over-hyped. case in point: LAIR

b)contians too many flaws such as screen tearing and glitches. example: HAZE

c)was just not a good game. IE: Turok

true some flops provide enjoyment and are good games but you have to remember that they flopped for a reason.

Future: Cross Edge, Final Fantasy XIII, White Knight Chronicles, The Last Remnant, Eternal Sonota, Shin Megami Tensei.

I don't see where you are going with this anyway. It's not like alot of these kinds of games get made in abundance on any system.

So why did you say that, according to GS, the PS3 only has one good game? Also, check my edit from the same time you posted. A "flop" could even be an 8.0 or 8.5 game.

this is GS system wars. if a game doesn't live up to the hype, then regardless the score it gets even an 8 if the game was hayped a 9+) then it is considered a flop. btw, i saw your edit.
