I own a Mac for certain things but honestly, I greatly prefer Windows. My points are valid still because it IS 100% possible to make a virus for a Mac. Infact, its probably easier to hack a Mac because it has less built in protection. Thats just the nature of Macs. They are much better for video editing and multimedia purposes though.
[QUOTE="SolidSnake35"] More user friendly, faster OS, no viruses, easy navigation (dock and expose), and just generally more enjoyable to use.horrowhip
gimme 20 minutes and I could write code for a virus in OS X that would screw over your entire system. The only reason it "doesn't have viruses" is because none of the guys that make viruses even bother with Mac's because nobody has them. If they even held a 5% market share, you would see viruses. Simple as that. Trust me, OS X is not invulnerable to viruses as Macintosh wants everyone to believe....
I'm glad no one can be bothered. It still means no viruses for me...As proven by your avatar :P This thread has convinced me that nobody knows anything about Apple's computers (except for a few of your ;) )[QUOTE="musicalmac"][QUOTE="AnimeHendrix"]Macs. Are. Terrible.horrowhip

If you don't know, don't speculate, especially regarding security issues. Bill Gates himself once said the Mac is hacked every day, and that he dared anyone to TRY and do that to Windows. The tech world was stunned into silence after that statement, because it was so unbelievably ridiculous. You don't want to mirror that statement ;)I am not saying that, any OS is prone to viruses as it is impossible to prevent that... What I am saying is there are more barriers built directly into Windows. Ifa hackerwas just as familiar with OS X as they are with Windows, THEORETICALLY OS X is easier to hack because it has less protection. Thing is because Mac's don't hold a large enough market share, hackers have no reason to learn how to hack OS X. It IS possible, but right now very few know OS X as deeply as Windows. It's as simple as that. Microsoft had to build lots of protection into Vista because viruses are a problem. Technically, Vista is tough to hack. Thing is, it is possible and once someone finds out how, thanks to the internet, everyone knows how to... Just wanted to clarify that.

I am quite satisfied with Windows Vista on mylaptop. Vista may have had compatibility problems when it first came out, but due to numerous updates, most of them are resolved. I have plugged many devices into my laptop without any need to install drivers. Its just plug and play. I seriously cannot understand why so many people complain about compatibility with Vista when I have not experienced problems with it.I have seensome websites speakdoom and gloom about Vista, but it hasn't affected me.Oh, and for the record, Windows XP had more issues when it came out. Mac OSX is also very good, whileLinux on the other hand was a nightmare for me when I used Ubuntu and Fedora. Never want to touch Linux again. Vista and Mac OSX all the way :)

exactly... and thats exactly what I was saying. I have taken several Computer Science courses and I know programming. I also know Mac's. Honestly, if a talented hacker wanted to he could devastate Macs. Thing is, it is just as possible with PC's. My point is, Macs aren't more secure because no OS can EVER be secure. The fact that it is advertised as "Immune" to viruses is blatant false advertising.

thats a fact of life with a drastic rebuild of the OS code... Besides, its not like it is all that difficult to dual boot. Infact, Vista has a built in hard-drive partitioner making dual-booting easier than ever....

I scan through the responses really quicly I don't read pages and pages of responses, I have been using Windows on my laptop for a good 2.5 years now haven't gotten 1 virus. Most people that get viruses don't know how to use a computer or get lazy.
macs are amazing, just not for games. though with the intel chips, games are going to be showing up more on macs like Starcraft 2, Rage, ect.
and, Mac OS X Leopard on friday, going to be awesome.

not really... Microsoft hires hackers to try and break their OS so they can make it less prone to weakness. Thing is, there are literally millions of ways you can hack a computer. Computers are odd that way, change one thing and everything can go wrong.

Having used Debian, Slackware, Suse, Arch, and the many other Linux distrubutions, along with Windows derivatives since 3.1 and Mac OS 9 and OSX, the nature of a Mac is very much geared to those who are computer inept. Granted, if you wanted to dig deeper, you could. But the availibility of tinkering isn't there. Now, I like Windows even less than Macs, don't misunderstand, but to me there just two evils. Linux in all of its distros was made, advanced, and put forward through the efforts of the community of programmers and what programmers wanted.

Windows Blackcomb is built from the ground up.
I'll believe it when I see it, Vista was supposed to be as well instead its built from the MAFIAA up. Microsoft has a longer history of overpromising and underdelivering than any company I know.
If Blackcomb has no system user, no problems with fragmentation, ditches the registry, and halves the system requirements compared to Vista then it will be equivalent to its competition in the most basic senses but that isn't something I consider likely to be the case.
*snip*
horrowhip
This is so wrong that I'm going to have to break it down piece by piece.
"that is so wrong its not even funny.... The only reason Windows has viruses is because all of the hackers and programmers know tricks to get around the system. Thing is, Windows has LAYERS UPON LAYERS of Anti-Virus protection built in. OS X and Linux don't."
Windows has no anti-virus software built in as far as I'm aware, it has a firewall but its poor compared to even most of the free ones out there.
"Techinically, its a thousand times easier to hack into OS X than it is to get through Windows, but through trial and error, people have figured out Windows and can hack it easier. Honestly, if a hacker was given a week, maybe two weeks, he could literally destroy a Mac with viruses."
Maybe, but I've yet to see any study that says as much even from their competitors. Macs are patched much more quickly than Windows is as well, so theres less of a chance for viruses to impact the system. Linux is the same, in fact with Linux every piece of software you install gets automatic updates and they are entirely optional to install (no secret updates).
"Windows gets a bad rep because its the most popular and therefore has more people ready to tear it down but it is honestly the best OS."
Windows has:
1. System user - a hidden user most people don't even know exists, huge target for malware.
2. Fragmentation - Linux solved this problem as of early-2001, before Windows XP was even released
3. System requirements - Windows has consistently required more hardware resources than competitors
4. Virtualization - Virtualization does exist for Windows, however it has been around for less time and is inferior to the competition.
"People need to understand that and realize Microsoft isn't out there to "Steal" your money with a crappy OS. They hire the BEST programmers around and go through millions of hours of QA and debugging. The fact that 99.9% of computers run on it only amplifies the chances of a bug being found and having those people complain."
Microsoft has in the past and continues to engage in unethical or illegal business practices to protect and expand their monopoly, fortunately its no longer working very well. Their corporate culture like their OS is restrictive and inefficient causing many things to take far longer than necessary and thus delaying substantive improvements.
"Vista is honestly the BEST OS I have ever used considering its age. It is just as stable as XP at this point and has very few issues. Just because there is a vocal minority that complains out the arse, doesn't mean Windows Vista sucks. Just need to point this out to EVERYONE. Vista is built differently from former Windows OS's, and people screw it up because they treat it like an old OS... If you use Vista properly, it is easier to use and much faster than XP."
1. Vista has numerous privacy concerns over XP, these same concerns (DRM and spyware) chew up CPU and GPU time for no good reason.
2. Vista has more than doubled system requirements over XP.
3. UAC is a poorly implemented security measure that is less effective and more obnoxious and frequent than similar system which have existed elsewhere for better than a decade.
4. One of the big criticisms of Vista is its laggardly performance over XP.
"Games only have issues because drivers suck at the moment but nVidia is going to fix before Crysis which is their marker for the latest time they can release stable drivers... Vista requires more resources because of its built in functions that honestly, I now consider necessary. Aero is extremely complex code wise, and the Side-Bar requires tons of resources because of the way it functions. Turn those two things off, and Vista runs on fewer resources than XP."
There is absolutely no indication that everything Aero does couldn't be done better with fewer system resources. Project Looking Glass which is superior to Vista eye-candy wise (which Vista BTW ripped off) requires less system requirements running on Windows, Compiz is far more efficient and better looking, Metisse is more efficient as well..see a pattern there?
The same is absolutely true of Vista's sidebar as well, it is very inefficient compared to Gnome panels, KDE widgets, Mac widgets, or whatever else you want to compare it to.
Gates just takes chunks of other O/S and pieces them together to make a new Windows, they even jacked Apple's GUI from the beginning to put into Windows, to get away from DOS and command line. Vista Aero??? Linux distros have been doing that like years before Vista even hit the scene. Vista sidebar??? Oh wait Linux once again with the Gnome panel.
Microsoft just jacks pices of software and then says its "new" and "revolutionary"
