As every PC gamer knows its about that time of the month to spend $1000 to upgrade your computer ;) anyways 6 core gaming is already here and has more coming. For those of you who laughed at the Phenom II X6 (starting at $200) this is what I have to show to you.

17 Games that already take advantage of 6 core CPUs:

  1. Metro 2033: up to 20%*
  2. Prince of Persia: up to 10%*
  3. Arma II: up to 5%*
  4. Battlefield Bad Company 2: up to 10%*
  5. Grand Theft Auto 4: up to 10%*
  6. Dirt 2: up to 10%*
  7. Resident Evil 5: up to 15%*
  8. Splinter Cell Conviction: up to 10%*
  9. Metal of Honor: up to 10%*
  10. Civilization 5: up to 40%*
  11. Ruse: up to 20%*
  12. Dead Rising 2: up to 20%*
  13. Dragon Age Origins: up to 5%*
  14. Arcania Gothic 4: up to 30%*
  15. F1 2010: up to 10%*
  16. Lost Planet 2: up to 15%*
  17. Anno 1404: up to 30%*

*compared to a quad core*

So folks there you have it, 6 core gaming is going to be making its way into a PC near you :)

What's wrong with the 4-core cpu I have? :/ I'll wait untill the 8-cores to come out with cheap prices.

Well a Phenom II X4 920 - 2.8ghz is only $125 while a Phenom II X6 1055T - 2.8ghz is $200. So I guess you could say quad core was already getting pretty cheap.

That's funny. I can't think of a single game that manages to max out all 4 cores of my I7 as it is now.

Now, I did'nt even bother checking your link but are you sure that those improvements are even a matter of extra cores?

I'm asking because, general concencus right now is that we're still not at the point where even four cores are properly utilized.

if you are playing BFBC2 then i have bad news for you. its the only game right now that is at least 50% faster than gaming on a dual core.

black ops, crysis 2, bf 3, etc will also benefit with more cores

I dont understand it with Metro 2033, the game doesnt even make use of quads. Why would it use Hex-cores then? BUt my $100 overclocked 3.5ghz quad is still pumping out games pretty well.

dont fall for that, they must of used 1024x768 res. once you go over 1680x1050 the difference is less than 2%.

the only game on the market right now that uses more than 2 cores is BFBC2.

i had a gtx480 with a dual core and was pumping 40fps, once i got a quad core im pumpin now 75-80fps.

I honestly think that this is some sort of propaganda to boost the sale of hexacore processors. The fact of the matter is that 99% of the games out right now run like absolute butter on any quad-core CPU of 2.6ghz or higher. The game devs know this, Intel and AMD know this, and they know that there are plenty of people still using Q6600's and QX6700's from 2006-07 who can run any game very well. They don't like this, so they put out worthless information about how a hexacore can improve your performance.

All of the games on that list run perfectly on a quad-core, and some of them run great on a fast dual-core. I don't need to go from 70fps to 110. That's not a real benefit.

An i7 quad core will blow that amd 6 core. I still think having 4 high performing core is better for gaming.

I would say that 80 to 90 % of pc games only have 2 threads. Most games can distribute load between cores but it doesnt result in better performance, in fact it can worsen the performance. Sure there are exceptions like bad company 2, but they are just exceptions.

I say right now the best gaming cpu's are the phenom 955 and intel i5-760 with turbo boost. Quad core with high clock speeds that performs well in any situation.

I have NP with upgrading when it is needed, I was thinking about getting a 460 but I dont need it right now, and by the time I do it will be alot cheaper. I thought games just started using quad core, now they want to go to 8 cores? Thats some BS, most games dont even look as good as crysis on 2 cores.

Well AMD is making a push on their bulldozer CPU which is 8 core and 12 core if I'm not mistaken. Also Cryengine 3 can use up to 8 cores.

Im not too worried, the difference is still minimal, and this 6 core certainly helps with rendering large scenes in 3DS MAX.

Well there are more reasons to buy a hex than just gaming, people could want them to do video encoding or 3d rendering and a hex would help greatly with that sort of stuff. And they also are a good buy for the future as more games are going to begin using them to their potential, like crysis 2 will fully use up to an 8 core processor. People said basically the same thing as you about quad core and dual core processors just a couple years ago

amd chips are pretty meh, to much power consumption too much heat for less performance than Intel chips right now. An i7 can still out perform an AMD 6 core. Its sad but true.

not when an older model Intel can out perform it. Unfortunately Amd and Intel have switched sides the last half of this gen, I remember when AMD 64 jsut came out and it was the OMGWTFBBQ, but now its just budget doodoo, bu id rather have doodoo than nothing eh.

I know in going with the 6 core soon here. My PC upgrade is long overdue. That being said if someone already has a PC right now that can play all the games on that list maxed with a 4 core processor then a 20-40% increase a 6 core will give will not matter.

All we know about Battlefield 3 is that Dx9 won't be supported. I'm pretty sure we know nothing about how many cores it will utilize.
It's a safe bet to assume it will use more though; it's 1 - 2+ years down the road.

Thats a pretty terrible benchmark by pcgameshardware. No charts, no graphs, no test system. Just a screenshot of the game and text stating the performance increase percentage.

I dont even know if I can take their word. What resolution did they use? What quad core and what hex core? What GPU????? WTF????

even for the price i wouldn't go for AMD, all the benchmarks ive seen have i5 and i7's out performing AMDs lateset chips. They are comparing a hexacore to last years models!!! that is severe asscock people. for 300 dollars i could easily get an i5 or i7 that out performs an AMD hexacore. asscock people, asscock.

This is the real truth. People are getting duped into buying hexacores for PC's that are used for email, internet, music, and gaming. I can understand if you're doing a ton of video editing, 3dmax, etc.. But like I said earlier, there isn't a game out there that won't run perfectly on any decent quad-core CPU. I would stake my reputation on the idea that 95%+ of games that come out in the next 18 months will still run perfectly on any current-gen quad-core. Hell, even on a Core 2 Quad of 2.8ghz or higher.

The Phenom II Deneb/thuban architecture is barely better clock for clock than an Intel Core 2 Quad. By the time that games demand a hexacore to run optimally, that whole architecture will be obsolete anyways.

They dont even take full advantage of quadcores yet.... My CPU usage usually wont go higher than 75%, some cores will be at 50-60% usage when gaming. But the more cores they start using the better I guess.

6-core is NOT overkill, its just unnecessary to gaming with, for present. They're only good for server computers. No such as overkill in gaming. Quad core is for you.

Hmm, well I'm getting a quadcore, but the motherboard I have allows for core unlocking so hopefully I'll be able to use 6 cores. :D
