At the E3, this year, Phil Harrison talks with 1upabout theMaddenperformance issue on the PS3 and he responds. Unfortunately, its at the end of the video. It seems like Phil Harrison is bothered by the interviewer's question but he points out that Sony has no issues with their sport games running at 1080p 60fps.

"We are provding some tools and technologiesfrom our WorldwideStudios core technoloy groups, actually to third parties now, as well. You may remember from GDC we announced this thing called EDGE and that's now widely deployedin the Third party community developers and that isclearly improving the developers ability to maximize what the Cell processor does.Hopefully that will assist the folks at EA..."

"It would concern me if the platform was incapable of doing it [60fps], but we've proven that the platform was capable of doing it. So its not a Playstation 3issue...I am trying to be polite here"

So is Phil is saying EA has no real understanding what the Cell processor does? ...Politely?

Yes, he's basically blaming the devs w/o blaming the devs (politely). He's not really saying that it's not an issue.....he's basically trying to say the PS3 is capable of doing it.

He is right. They built the game engine most likely on the 360. To save time and money they ported it.

With Oblivion they ported the game engine yet rebuilt the shaders for the PS3. That took a long time to do. EA dosen't have that time, so they just ported the engine and optimized the best they could do in the amount of time they had.

That's exactly it. You'd have to be on crack to believe that the PS3 couldn't handle Madden at 60fps. It all has to do with development. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's really dumb of fanboys to use Madden to bash the PS3; we know it's capable of running games at 60fps.

Escpecially right now so early in the gen. The devs still don't know how to get the most out of either the PS3 or Xbox 360.

I'm sure the PS3 can handle 60fps Madden easily. But, the fact that it's only at 30fps tells me two things: 1. The PS3 must be very hard to work with. 2. The people at EA are a bunch of know nothings.

He's not wrong in saying that the devs just didn't do all they could've done, but I have heard multiple times that Madden and other franchises will be developed on PS3 starting next year. 30fps won't be a problem again.

Its EA man, you can't get anymore worse devs. Its not surprising if they used next to the same code base for the ps3 version with alters here and there, I mean this guys make ubisofts best efforts in this department look like broadway.

i still blame sony. They are just now giving devs that EDGE tool. MS has given all the tools needed to make coding on the xbox 360 as painless as possible from the start. Sony began by telling the devs... you guys figure it out.

Meh, my thought is if lair can be done in 1080p at 30fps on the ps3, if GT5 can be done in 1080p at 60fps. Madden sure as hell should have been capable of 720p at 60fps. The ps3 has already proved it's more the capable. The Madden ps3 devs; not so much...

He is saying Madden 06 was the first 360 Madden game and it ran at 30fps ...
Madden 07 was preety much the same a few tweaks and code optimisation - it STILL could only run at 30 fps on 360 ...
Madden 08 again is like change player names, add random feature and optimise code ... it manages to run at 60 fps ...

on PS3 Madden 07 ran at 30 fps ... and Madden 08 runs at 30 fps ... and Madden 09 will run at 60 fps the same as the 360 version ...

Hammer, meet nail.

And asking why they didn't just take the time to do it shows ignorance. You have release timing issues as well as cost issues.

Most of EA games are seasonal..which means they can't spend time on it like more unique games. They don't have 3 and 4 years to make a game like most devs do..So yeah, I think they have to be a bit sloppier with how they dev things.

Because it's obvious it isn't if other games with better graphics are running at 60fps on the PS3. (namely UT3)
