I can't pick one. Call of Duty 2 has maybe the best shooter campaign this gen imo. Multiplayer though WaW is my favorite, though mw3 is creeping up on it. I'll have to put some more time into the game before I can decide.
Probably MW3, single player wise. Then MW2, followed by MW. I've yet to play Black Ops and wasn't blown away by WaW, though I liked Zombies. CoD 3 was pretty good and I can't remember CoD and CoD 2, though I'm positive I've played them.
I voted CoD4 because of its MP component, although the best SP CoD for me was CoD2. It "over-did" WW2 a little bit in some regards but never brazenly. And although the SP has moments when you have to advance to a certain point before enemies will stop spawning, nothing has ever quite stuck with me from a shooter campaign as CoD2.

i dont see what mainstream has anything to do with quality or anything for that matter. Anyways. for me: cod > Cod4 = mw2 = mw3 >>>>>> treyarchs subpar output
CoD1 plus United Offensive, CoD2 and CoD4 :) But out of all of them, CoD1 with UO was, without a doubt, the best in the series! Now it just sucks pretty hardcore!

I have STALKER, didn't play that good.There was also only 1 QTE in the entire campaign for MW 3 ... Scripted events also allow cinematic Hollywood moments which is exactly what a lot of gamers want.
Black ops was pretty good, I loved the maps but I'm going to have to give the crown to Cod 4. It had good maps, guns and it wasn't unbalanced. MW2 was terrible.

CoD 2, as both the singleplayer and multiplayer were incredible. Especially the server hosting worked incredible, simplistic changes & mods added a ton to the fun and balance.

I hit 13th, and had a very fun time playing it. Prior to release, I actually thought it was going to be a boring game due to the slow gameplay, but it turned out excellent nonetheless. Many things done right in that game.

COD 4 is by far the best imo. While it wasn't really balanced I didn't think it was particularly broken either like the more recent ones. MW3 is ok in terms of balance I think but the map designs suck, they are way too open. COD4 had by FAR the best map design in the series.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: United Offensive are my favorites. United Offensive has one of my favorite campaigns in a game ever. The Battle of the Bulge and the B-17 gunner mission really stand out for me.

I don't understand your defenition of generations... So if it came before the launch of the 360 then it is last gen? It came out October 25 on pc and November 17th on the 360.. PC doesn't have specific generations, it wasn't like it was a 3 year old port or anything it was less than three weeks old.. I am sure if the xbox was out by October 25th the game would have come out then too, it isn't like they released it on pc and where like "OMG GUYS! Teh 360 iz out in less than 3 weeks GET TO WORK ON A PORT QUICK.." The game was obviously being developed with launching along the 360 in mind, it couldn't have been done on last generation consoles as it was and didn't come out on last generation consoles so there for I think it is safe to conclude that it is a current generation title...

game was specifically designed with the start of this gen in mind and it shows :S and were only talking like mere days and aswell as being a game that had a 78% sell rate attach at 360's launch it was possibly one of the most sucessful titles in the early days of the 360 aswell it was a major player in THIS GEN like it or not CoD2 is one of those games that is seen more as a current gen game despite the PC release being mere days before its 360 bretherin.
