We all know that PS3 exclusives benefit from Blu-ray, as evidenced in these few examples.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
http://www.destructoid.com/uncharted-2-would-be-very-different-without-blu-ray-152171.phtml
"We?re fortunate that we get to work on a system that has a hard drive and uses blu-ray for storage. Without these things, Uncharted 2 would have been a very different game. What we were able to do with the Cell processor allowed us to achieve a density of polygons and a fidelity to our effects that would simply not be possible without it."
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/856/856239p1.html
"It seems that the tech companies will never be able to keep up with the demands of a Metal Gear Solid game, with Hideo Kojima stating in a Famitsu interview that Guns of the Patriots suffered cuts in order to fit onto to a Blu-ray disc.
At 50GB, the Blu-ray offers nearly six times the storage capacity of a DVD ? but it's still not enough for the demands of Metal Gear Solid 4. Earlier last week the game's assistant producer Ryan Payton confessed that the American and European versions would not carry the Japanese voice track due to storage limitations. Hideo Kojima further elaborated on the issue and stated in a Famitsu interview, kindly translated by Kotaku, that, 'There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress.'"
God of War 3
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/235873/god-of-war-3-tops-40gb-of-blu-ray/
"Sony has confirmed that the European version of God Of War III fills over 40GB of Blu-ray disc space - taking full advantage of the multi-layered format."
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncharted_3:_Drake%27s_Deception
"In an interview at GamesCon 2011, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications Arne Meyer spoke of the unprecedented size of Uncharted 3 stating 'Uncharted 2 barely made it to 25GB, while Naughty Dog is going over 50GB this time, for Uncharted 3. But in the end we'll be under 50. We?ll be one disc.' Meyer also spoke of what it is like to work with the PlayStation platform stating 'I think it really helps. It's not even about sales. It's about what we can push on the platform and how far we can take it. I'm sure you'll hear this from every other Sony developer but you know, I can't tell you how much we've been able to optimise Cell and you know, the amount of content we can put on Blu-ray.'"
Killzone 2
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/killzone-2-dev-blu-ray-is-a-necessity/
"The upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive Killzone 2 could not fit onto a DVD (capacity of dual-layer disc: 8.5 GB), according to the game's producer Steven Ter Heide. In an interview with Gamepro, Heide said, 'It is not a luxury to have Blu-ray, but rather a necessity, as compression only gets you so far.'"
Heavy Rain
http://www.vg247.com/2010/09/09/cage-ps3-perfect-for-heavy-rain-due-to-blu-ray-disc-a-more-sophisticated-entertainment-experience/
"Heavy Rain lead David Cage has outlined reasons for siding with Sony for his groundbreaking game, saying PS3 has a more 'sophisticated' entertainment ideal while noting Blu-Ray?s extra storage capability.
'I?m absolutely happy with the agreement with Sony. It was the perfect move,' he told GI.
'It was the right platform for what we wanted to achieve. It was the platform with the Blu-ray disc, promoting movies, promoting a more sophisticated entertainment experience.'"
Killzone 3
http://www.gameblurb.net/news/killzone-3-40-gb-of-blu-ray-galore-only-5-mb-on-your-hardrive/
"The game essentially takes up 40GB on a Blu-Ray making one big game. Fortunately for us, Guerrilla Games is keen to make sure that your that it will only eat up 5MB on your hard drive. It?s not surprising at all that they can pull such a feat with the last game doing very much the same. Even other developers have caught on how to conserve hard drive space and make next to nothing load times (Naughty Dog and Visceral Games come to mind). With that said, here is just a friendly reminder that Killzone 3 is out next week on February 25th, 2011. Be sure to have your Helghast helmet ready."
There's just a handful of PS3 exclusives that take full advantage of the Blu-ray format. But what about multiplats?
Mass Effect 3
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-mass-effect-3-face-off
"The real disappointment with the 360 version is Bioware's decision to slice its content across two DVDs, awkwardly forcing a divide between the main story and the side-missions. For a completist, this will doubtless result in multiple disc-swaps between its 50-plus missions. Meanwhile, the PS3 version naturally sidesteps the issue altogether by brute force of the Blu-ray disc's higher capacity, allowing you to dive into the optional content seamlessly from the main quest."
Grand Theft Auto
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/16302/Rockstar-Games-Storage-is-a-Problem-with-the-Xbox-360/
"In a lengthy interview with 1UP to talk about GTA IV, Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser has commented on an issue that has already been highlighted by other developers: The Xbox 360 doesn't have a built-in hard drive as the previous Xbox and for retail games it uses DVD-9, which is starting to look outdated compared to the Blu-ray Disc solution used by the PlayStation 3.
One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don't have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It's a slightly bigger DVD disc.
Houser said he has discussed this issue with Microsoft, hoping the software giant will come up with a solution soon:
I met with a bunch of the senior fellows from [Microsoft].
I said, that's kind of complicated.... The upshot of the technical challenges we've experienced on either the 360 or on the PS3 is [that] both companies stepped up to the plate and have supported us in a way that was beyond even my greedy expectations. They've been amazing. I think that the 360 is going to have to get 'round this issue we're talking about. I can think of various ways they can do it. Hopefully, they're going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it's going to become more of an issue. If we're filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It's not like our games are going to get any smaller. I think that issue's on the table with a bunch of games right now. I'm sure they'll come through with an intelligent solution."
RAGE
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/25/rage-requires-3-discs-on-xbox-360-8gb-install-on-ps3-tolerance/
"id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:
'Sony was great,' Willits said. 'Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice.'"
Final Fantasy XIII
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-face-off
"The team had to find a way to compress over 32GB of CG to fit within the confines of three Xbox 360 DVDs - squeezed already by a copy protection mechanism that limits available space to a meagre 6.8GB, less than the storage potential of both PlayStation 2 and Wii. The sheer idea of porting over a massive Blu-ray game like this onto the Xbox 360 seems like lunacy.
'Adequate but a touch disappointing' best sums up the Xbox 360 version. Fine edges lose precision, and while the effect is mitigated thanks to the MSAA along with the multitude of post processing effects the engine has at its disposal, the fact is that the lack of resolution can make the 360 build look sub-par. The clean CG look of the PS3 game in motion is unduly compromised, and while it's still a handsome enough title on Xbox 360, it lacks the pristine presentation of its sibling.
Mass Effect 2
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/106/1063107p1.html
"Last month, Bioware Community Manager Chris Priestly noted players had to doone required disc swap for the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 2.
But that is no longer the case.
The game will make players re-insert disc 1 as they make their way towards the end levels. Bioware producer Jessie Houston explained to IGN just what happens.
"Players will start with Disc 1 for the introduction and early level choices, then go through a funnel level of sorts, where they will need to switch to Disc 2," Houston said. "From there they will play the middle portion of the game, which is mostly on Disc 2. Then after another funnel point in the story they'll go back to Disc 1."
Assassin's Creed Revelations
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/09/assassins-creed-revelations/
"If you?re a huge fan of Assassin?s Creed, then you will be pleased to know that the PS3 version of Assassin?s Creed Revelations will be on the receiving end of a bonus thanks to the extra amount of storage space that is available on the Blu-ray format. Those who pick up Assassin?s Creed Revelations will also be able to enjoy a throwback to the past ? that is, a full version of the original Assassin?s Creed for free."
Medal of Honor
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/medal-of-honor-gets-ps3-exclusive-special-edition-with-hd-remake/
"Soldiers who plan to sign up for the new Medal of Honor on PS3 this October will get an added incentive for going with Sony's console: Medal of Honor Frontline. Originally released in 2002, the game's been remastered in HD for the console and will come packed in a PS3 Medal of Honor special edition package."
Bioshock Infinite
http://playstationlifestyle.net/2012/03/01/bioshock-infinite-release-date-revealed-original-bioshock-on-disc-free-for-ps3-version/
"The PS3 version of the game will support Sony?s PlayStation Move controller and include a free copy of the critically acclaimed original BioShock for PS3 on the same Blu-ray disc."
Dead Space 2
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2010/09/dead_space_extraction_lies_in_wait_on_dead_space_2_blu_ray
"The Wii's Dead Space: Extraction was an excellent but sadly overlooked sci-fi shooter that deserved a bigger audience and a better home. How pleasing, then, that it's on the way to PlayStation 3 owners via the special edition of Dead Space 2.
Playable with Move ? although also compatible with Dualshock 3 ? the game will be given a high definition lick of paint and Trophies, with the Wii original's drop-in, drop-out co-operative gameplay still intact too. Dead Space: Extraction is exclusive to the PS3 version of Dead Space 2, making a nice little bonus over Xbox 360 owners."
Max Payne 3
http://www.lazygamer.net/xbox-360/max-payne-3-will-come-on-2-discs-for-xbox-360-and-you-need-both/
"In yet another sign of the DVD format reaching its end Rockstar have revealed that Max Payne 3 will be coming out on 2 discs for the Xbox 360.
Well this is where the tinfoil hats come out. the initial 2 disc announcement was made by a company called Redbox in the USA, Redbox is a hugely popular game rental company but according to Rockstar, Redbox only ever send out 1 disc."
There's a short list of examples. That's just the tip of the iceberg! It sounds like it was a pretty bad decision for Microsoft to use a DVD drive in the Xbox. I'll obviously use my Xbox 360 for games like Halo, but having to switch the discs MULTIPLE times in a game like Mass Effect 3 just to see all the content? Sign me up for the PS3 version all day!
