Rut row raggy !

Thoughts ?

Numerous PS3 users are reporting running into technical problems after downloading or while attempting to download the newly released firmware version 2.40.

Released on Wednesday, firmware update 2.40 introduces a range of new PS3 features, including in-game access to the system's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and a Trophies achievement system.

However, a number of threads have appeared on the official PlayStation boards in which users are complaining of having problems downloading the new firmware, of freezing consoles, and of having trouble rebooting their systems after download.

Next-Gen has contacted Sony for comment.

For more about the firmware update and why Sony believes it represents a "big leap forward" for the PlayStation Network, check out our interview with PSN director of operations Eric Lempel.

Edit: Not wanting to be full of PS3 of all this bad news but......

Visitors to Sony PlayStation website at risk of malware infection Hackers use SQL injection and scare tactics to grab consumers' credit card details

Researchers at IT security firm Sophos have warned lovers of video games that pages on the US-based Sony PlayStation website have been compromised by hackers.

Experts at SophosLabsTMhave discovered that cybercriminals have successfully used an SQL injection attack to plant unauthorized code on pages promoting the PlayStation games "SingStar Pop" and "God of War".

SingStar Pop
One of the webpages on Sony PlayStation's US website that has been compromised by hackers.

At the time of writing the hacker's code attempts to dupe web surfers by running a fake anti-virus scan and displaying a bogus message that their computer is infected with a variety of different viruses and Trojan horses.

Not being a fanboy, but if this was MS, this wouldn't have happened. MS has more resourses and would have been able to test the download out before making it available. Looks like Sony got too antsy and felt the need to put it out. I know that they are having a rough time in the console war and want to compensate, but please, do it right.

It's happened on the 360.

Yes, and MS was being just as antsy as Sony is now when they released the 360. They just rushed the 360 out when it lacked the proper testing that was required. Now MS seems to be very stable in the console wars. There updates have never caused any problems and it seems MS responds to things quickly now. Hopefully Sony will plant their roots soon and be able to quit rushing.

Mine downloaded fine and my console runs as well as it ever has (knock on wood). Honestly though, I'm not impressed with it. When you hit the XMB button during play, the menu comes up and then the arrows go in a circle to load everything. I can't listen to music in every game, and overall, the interface is still poor at best when compared to the 360's. But I'm glad to see the Sony continues to work in improving the ps3.

lol your 1st post backfired and now you still want to defend Microsofts shortcomings, look all console makers have problems and they do take care of it in due time. Atleast PS3 is a stable system whilst the 360 is like a walking meltdown.

Me - Howdy and good morning. I downloaded the 2.4 update this morning and it bricked my PS3. It won't load past the initial wavy screen. Sony - Did you plug in the correct AV cables? Me - Dude, I get the wavy screen so it's not an AV problem. It just won't load past that. Sony - Have you turned off the system and held the power button to reset to SD? Me - DUDE, it's not an AV issue, I see the screen just fine. Sony - let me check to see if this has been reported as a problem by Sony. Me - (Waiting 10 minutes) Sony - It does not seem to be a reported problem at the moment but if you would like to send in your PS3 there will be a charge. Me - You're charging me to fix something you broke? Sony - It is over the factory warranty period. Me - That's ridiculous. Sony - I would suggest waiting to see if this becomes a bigger problem because Sony would possibly extend warranties then. Me - Thanks.....I guess. So I'm stuck with a brick until Sony either gives in and admits it's a problem or I pay the price. Some people have said that reformatting the HDD fixed theirs but good lord if Sony has me lose all my save files, music, and vids. Freaking nasty email ahead.

ahh. what does the problems with the psn DL have to do with the 360's RRod. nothing. but sonyfans find a way to bring up RRoD as a way to say. hay sony has problem. but nothing like the rrod.let not forget the people that went to the dre with the ps1 and 2 consoles.and how long and how many remodels had to be released just to get rid of the DRE problem with the ps2. it seem everytime a new firmware comes out it has some problems. last one was 2.36v.

This is not uncommon. It has happened to both Microsoft and Nintendo.

Any firmware update on any system is potentially risky.

I'll never forget when my Wii got a problem like this with the Metroid Prime update. I found a way to circumvent the problem temporarily, and right when I was about to send it in, it healed itself. That was a magical moment indeed. Maybe the PS3 will do the same!

[QUOTE="Ibacai"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"]Me thinks I will be waiting for a few days to download this update then...Jandurin
Smart man.

That really sucks. I hope you weren't in the middle of any epic "don't wanna wait a week" sorta games.

I'm on Act 3 of MGSIV and I finally had some extra time in the next few days.

This is not uncommon. It has happened to both Microsoft and Nintendo.

Let it be known that I'm not just attacking Sony here (I know you aren't Spruce, just using your post as relevance ;) ) and that I understand it does happen to all companies. I'm just a little upset.

Not being a fanboy, but if this was MS, this wouldn't have happened. MS has more resourses and would have been able to test the download out before making it available. Looks like Sony got too antsy and felt the need to put it out. I know that they are having a rough time in the console war and want to compensate, but please, do it right.

NinjaMunkey01

It's happened on the 360.

Yes, and MS was being just as antsy as Sony is now when they released the 360. They just rushed the 360 out when it lacked the proper testing that was required. Now MS seems to be very stable in the console wars. There updates have never caused any problems and it seems MS responds to things quickly now. Hopefully Sony will plant their roots soon and be able to quit rushing.

at least its fixable. They are always doing stability updates so i wont worry.

yet MS on the other hand.. Still has not fixed RROD so i dont know what you are trying to pove.

Please tell me the person in your sig wasn't serious.:cry:

At least when I got RROD, Microsoft promptly sent me a box and I was able to ship it off in a few days.

My PS3's disk drive is defective out of the box, and Sony doesn't ship the box until three days after they tell me they're doing it.

**** Sony customer support.

lol your 1st post backfired and now you still want to defend Microsofts shortcomings, look all console makers have problems and they do take care of it in due time. Atleast PS3 is a stable system whilst the 360 is like a walking meltdown.

Sorry about the late respons internet went down. Here is what I was going to say:

Not at all. Please be open-minded. I knew you were all going to attack me about this. I am also disappointed about MS's shortcomings, I am simply saying that they learned from their mistakes and Sony should also learn from MS's mistakes. I don't want Sony to end up like MS, losing billions are an issue that could have easily been settled.

Come on, don't act like a peacemaker. You knew full well that your first statement was inaccurate and unjustified, and that it would get all the flaming it has received.

Wow this is why I stay away from these threads. Ignorant posters like you. You didn't even bother to read my post. Would you rather me not be a peacemaker? GOOD I WONT. READ IBACAI'S POST. OH ITS TEH FIXABLE! I try to reason with you people yet you have to turn everything into a flamewar. I can never get into a peaceful debate with people on this site.

I can only laugh when someone gets so visibly pissed over a SW post. Take it easy. Its all in good fun. In fact, I don't really have a preference for any one system at all. They're all great in my books.

im sorry but i just have to lol at microsoft being quick and stable. 3 weeks and my friend just got his refirbished 360 back. second time its happened. if anything they have gotton slower because the first time he sent it in it took only a week.

psn_Jaimzl

That's disappointing to hear. Idk, the reapirs usually vary with MS. Took mine a few weeks. But still, MS hasn't done anything recently to plague owners with problems, and if anything, they have been more careful. Maybe stable wasn't the correct word.

Yeah, well if you thought MS customer service was bad you just wait until you have to deal with Sony. Hey, at least it isn't Apple, those guys just tell you to go swing.

Yeah, SW is known for that sort of thing. What I suggest is to ignore people who try to get a rise out of you because if you fire back, you may get modded. On a more peaceful note, I can see what the other guy means. Maybe you just worded it poorly. Either way, at least to my knowledge, Nintendo's updates seem to be the only system update you don't hear about with bricking systems.

MS's updates are a lot quicker though but MS is afterall a software company, and IMO, it shows. On the other hand Sony is a hardware manufacturer and their hardware is usually pretty reliable.

Oh hell, I get you. When my 360 RRoD'd (any of the times) I was in the same exact boat. (If you only read any of the texts I sent my friends...) Its terrible when stuff breaks and its not your fault.

This is a crappy thing that has happened to what should have been a great event. I really do feel crappy for you.

I did word it incorrectly in the original post. And I agree with the last statement.
