PS3 Firmware 2.40 Causing Console Lock-Ups - PSN Hacked ?

This 2.40 update is like a free hotdog. But you realize that you have to wait for the buns, ketchup, mustard, and whatever condoments to be included and patched.

I would buy SuperStardust, but I don't want to use credit cards, after that report of PSN getting hacked for the reason that hackers want to use your credit cards. Are those pre-paid cards available already or what, if so, where? Also, has anyone try going to a store and putting money in those pre-paid credit cards and use it to buy content off PSN?

YES. They are very different.The only similarity is that they have the same type of control style.

While it seems like every time the PlayStation 3undergoes a firmware upgrade is plagued by people trying to blame broken systems on the update, last night's 2.40 update seems to have caused genuine issues with many posters over at the official PlayStation forums. Owners of PS3s in all shapes and sizes have been reporting that their systems were loading to the initial PlayStation wave screen and simply hanging there after applying 2.40. No icons, no controller functions, no nothing, just the wave across the middle of the screen.

There doesn't seem to be any real pattern as to which systems are affected. 60GB, 40GB, 20GB, and 80GB systems alike have all been afflicted with the issue. We've contacted Sony for word on the issue, but in the meantime several of the more tech savvy forum posters have determined how to fix the issue, if you're willing to yank out your console's hard disk drive.

Users found that removing and reformatting their PS3 hard drive and then reinserting it into the console would get the system to boot completely, after which it asks to reformat the disk again and everything runs normally. Of course they lose all of their saved games and have to redo all of their downloads, but I suppose that is better than sending in the system for a $150.00 repair.

It was not a hack, but the accounts were compromised. Phishing.Which is user error.

MS is pretty secure, seeing as how they had decades of attacks on any software that they have ever made.

Ok,now I'm scared...I sent in my ps3 for repairs a whole month ago..and I still haven't heard anything from them.I called a few times but they say I should wait for an email.I missed GTA4 and MGS4 because of this.2 of my most anticipated games and I'm still not able to play them.
It's still a mystery when I get my ps3 back.Almost 5 weeks now.
Now I'm afraid that if I finally get it back and install this firmware that it's gonna lock up..and then I need to call Sony again and send my console in for repairs..I don't think I can handle that :?

Why Sony couldn't have given developers the heads up so that patches couldn't have been made available already is beyond me.

The trophies for example, there is a paltry list of games that will support this feature, while I can understand this for past titles, but why such a small list? why even bother if you are going to do this thing completely half-assed? the same thing with the custom soundtracks? Why go balls out with a freaking video showing off these features if only a handful of titles will even support this feature?

When I get home I'll run it through it's paces and see what's up, but why in the hell can't these guys roll out anything properly?

As for the soundtracks...Idunno...are there any games available *right now* that support it? Prologue, maybe? I don't think the game they were demo'ing on that video is out yet.

Devs need to look at crappy Xbox360 games that people buy for no other reason than to get the easy achievments on it.Jynxzor

Super Stardust HD is probably the best PSN game out right now. I love it. You should buy it because it's really great.

Ah...just wathched the video review on IGN. Looks really good...but awfully similar to a launch XBLA title. Can't remember the name of it, but I played the hell out of it.

Might pick it up just because, though. A good game is a good game.

It appears I will be backing up and updating today after all.

And maybe buying Stardust...

I don't think the problem is that major, but I'm not going to tell you that it's fine and turn on your PS3 and update it, I will not be held responsible. Just like other PS3 firmware updates, update at your own risk.

My PS3 has been freezing since I installed 2.40. I've only played MGO since I DLed it, but it never froze before this. My PS3 has only frozen once before this and that was on Uncharted.

Now about five to ten minutes into each MGO game, the game freezes after you pick weapons. Not impressed Sony...I'm almost positive that this has something to do with the update. It has also frozen when I tried to connect my bluetooth headset through the ingame XMB. Buggy ass update.

Hurry up with those PSN cards please I won't use a cc with XBL much less PSN. I want to give these guys my money but they are effing it up for me.

I eventuallly sold Warhawk since I could not buy the dlc for it, well that reason plus all the cheaters on there, I got friendly fire killed by guys in clans helping their teamates by switching sides and pinning people down while the guys that were in their clan took all the spawn points.

Who the hell allows team switching in ranked matches??? Does 2.4 include an option for reporting griefers because that needs to be implemented asap.

Ya right! Like MS tested their 360s and don't have RRoD etc. That's why my 360 got a failed HDD followed by RRoD and my Bro in law has gone through 5 360 and 5 360 controllers.

My PS3s update fine every time and they run smoothely always since launch. What the heck are people doing to their PS3s? They're idiots maybe?!

Me - Howdy and good morning. I downloaded the 2.4 update this morning and it bricked my PS3. It won't load past the initial wavy screen. Sony - Did you plug in the correct AV cables? Me - Dude, I get the wavy screen so it's not an AV problem. It just won't load past that. Sony - Have you turned off the system and held the power button to reset to SD? Me - DUDE, it's not an AV issue, I see the screen just fine. Sony - let me check to see if this has been reported as a problem by Sony. Me - (Waiting 10 minutes) Sony - It does not seem to be a reported problem at the moment but if you would like to send in your PS3 there will be a charge. Me - You're charging me to fix something you broke? Sony - It is over the factory warranty period. Me - That's ridiculous. Sony - I would suggest waiting to see if this becomes a bigger problem because Sony would possibly extend warranties then. Me - Thanks.....I guess. So I'm stuck with a brick until Sony either gives in and admits it's a problem or I pay the price. Some people have said that reformatting the HDD fixed theirs but good lord if Sony has me lose all my save files, music, and vids. Freaking nasty email ahead.Ibacai

This is not to say MS is better, but one of the ironic things of the generation has been that because of MS RROD problems, they've extended the warranty, and with basically no questions asked they've sent me replacement A/V cables, made my non-functioning LIVE card work, etc...

Sony, after the PS2's problems, I really feel like they owe it to use to trust us when there's a problem and make it right. The PS2 Disk Read Error was just as big as RROD (at least, in terms of making it so you couldn't play games) and yet a generation later, when an official software update put out by Sony makes your system stop working, they want to charge you to fix it? That's baloney.

Seriously, there is simply too much baloney going on - not to say MS is any better (they're not) it's simply that Sony isn't in "we'd better make up for screwing up mode" at the moment, and it's a damn shame we have to wait for them to get into that mode before they start fixing stuff they break. What irritates me to no end is that Sony, regardless of what they made you agree to when installing the software update, is liable for those systems, and it's in their best interest to have your PS3 working since they make their money on software licensing - so, you'd think fixing your PS3 for free would be a small price to pay.
