Yes developers/publishers are sure suffering from piracy. I mean just look at the WII and the 360 those two are way easier to mod then the PS3 so explain to me what makes the ps3 so special in this case? the other 2 have been hacked and now it was Sony's turn.

If sony doesn't like this they should just close their gaming department.

USS_Data

*Play Brawl on Wii online* Huh someone changed their outfit , Cool!

*Play Halo on 360 online* Nice modding of the maps, cant wait to play it!

*Plays COD on PS3 online* Ok, how long have you had the AC-130!?!

Once again save game hacks were around long before cfw was so your point is moot.

Hey what if some hacker jailbroke your system, just to get something minor like music or something, but it actually opened the door to mass piracy, hacks, and then when you go try to play your Halo theres a unlimited health, ammo guy cominga t you in every single game.

And then if he gets sued people actually give him money to take on MS??

Wouldn't you be pissed?

It's pointless to argue with the pirates. They are going to pirate games no matter what you say. They will always point fingers at other sources or say they have legit reasons. When it all comes down to it, they want their ability to pirate games. They don't give one flying crap about using other operating systems on their PS3, they want free games and now they want to hack legit games to ruin the experiance for others.

I agree, I mean I find it hard to believe all these CFW users are just running SNES emulators.

I'm not a big money/power hungry corporation and I don't care about them or their minor loses just like they don't care about us except for our money.

So yes I support Geohotz for standing up for our rights as customers by opening up the PS3.

Using SNES emulators with games you don't own is pirating so if you use any, congratulations, you are a pirate. And nice generalizations. OtherOS on the PS3 is used widely for scientific computing applications and in universities as a programing machine for asymmetric multiprocessing.

Good, then they would have no problem with using Other OS because they wouldn't need access to PSN.

Yes and your point?

You do know all this hacks for the PS3 weren't going as fast until Sony removed OtherOS. It's their own fault for taking something away something people may use. There are other means to deal with piracy that taking things away but on the other hand taking things away from the PS3 is normal for Sony.

USS_Data

exactly what is it that you know that no one else does? if you want to turn something you bought into a bomb its cool just dont detonate it because you just might hurt some people, its the laws job to protect those people from your reckless actions, sure you own your ps3 and are free to do as you wish but if you think you can release information that would result in variably in the savaging of the business of developers who put thousands of man hours and millions of dollars into thier work your selfish sense of entitlement knows no bounds, and you narcisistic to the point of near delusion. You talk about freedom of information so brazently so you want me post the lauch codes to the nuclear arsenal to all the world's payloads online? Ddont try and stop me I got it through my computer, its my property I can share the info with anyone I want...(I dont have nuke codes so bacK off FBI)

The world is full of stupid rules. From what I've read this guy has done nothing illegal. Here's an example of doing something technically illegal, If i buy a movie, and lend it to a friend, or go round someone's house with a load of other mates and watch a movie, technically, that is against the law, now tell me none of you do that? Stupid laws are stupid, this guy is highlighting the stupidity of society.

'Great way to spend you money, $50 to a loser who ruins the industry and who refuses to get a job and stoops to begging. GeoHotz (and other harmful hackers) are a plague to the industry.

I think he might have a jawb. Also, I don't see you defending Apple because he jailbroke the iphone/ipod.

I would (even though I don't really like Apple), that was a while ago though, but if there was a thread on it, I'd feel the same way regardless of the company.

To all the people that blindly support this guy. Would you like if you work for a company that produced nuclear weapons and someone was able to hack or spy on what you were doing and once they figured out what your company was doing they released the nuclear weapon info to thepublic putting people's lives in danger. This is the exact same scenario as what is happening with the PS3 right now. I seriously hope Geohotz gets destroyed by Sony. I'm not a sony fanboy, but I hate developers getting affected by what that hacking group and Geohot's did.

In theory his cause is richeous and he has a good point. But I dont think he gets that if he wins and lets say the companies stop banning or doing things to prevent hacking, people will abuse this and piracy will run rampent.

So many misinformed and uneducated posts i'm reading through here.Quick question. How many of you have downloaded music, movies,an applicaton, etc?

So yes your all pirates.I see a lot of people saying "Geohotz messed up online gaming for us legitimate players"...wrong.You dont need cfw to mod a game,i.e. mw2 etc.

Also there is a lot of misleading statements going on.Geohotz is a hacker. There is a difference between a hacker, cracker, modder, etc.

People say "well Geohotz released the keys,so it's his fault Sony is taking a loss".Well for one,Sony isn't taking any loss whatsoever. The arguments i've seen about the Ps2 being modded etc.....Sony has taken zero loss from that as the Ps2 is still leading the console sales.

It's like saying well limewire was harming the listening experience for us legitimate music listeners. It doesn't work that way.

People are ready to burn GH at the stake.Though none of the cheating and modding or pirated games etc have anything to do with the man.The reality of it is,they have everything to do with the modding scene people. Not GH.

Just stating facts that need to be stated, reading a lot of these posts. You can hate on GH all you want to,but get some concrete facts behind your words and not just what the main media says...cause that says you'll be believe anything you see or hear right off the bat. What he did is not illegal, and I hope he takes Sony through the ringer on this one,for big corporation powertrip purposes. My Ps3 is not modded, cracked, hacked, etc,so I can argue this from facts and not a cfw user point of view.

The witch hunt Sony is trying to pull is foul in every sense.Sure...don't take it lying down, but then don't start some almighty most powerful corporation in the world dictatorship gestapo bs.

Now what others have done using the keys is on THEM,not Geohotz.Such a big deal, but wasn't when he did the same with the iphone, ipad, etc

Funny how hypocritical a lot of people are....as they sit there and trash talk the man while using a cracked iphone or another piece of hardware he unlocked that you may use.Just my two cents.

I think the existence of more powerful consoles is a bigger threat to the industry than hacking. But the hacking itself could lead to that which is worrysome to me.

Well i sure don't think he is going to use it to throw a party or go on a vacation. He has a big publicly known case. The man is a genius and very smart,no matter if you like him or not. That was kind of a silly question.

One would think no matter who you are,you would be thinking about this case if it was your ball court.Well, individuals with common sense would any way.

I don't understand why people would assume Geo is making money on the donation.. Sony is already claiming he has attempted to make money for his own benefit prior to this .. I can almost guarantee Geo and his lawyers played whatever donations for the court case by the books.

Why support someone who is destroying the industry

Activision is destroying the industry more. And so is every other publisher with their yearly releases, dumbing down games, making them shorter, day one DLC, price raises.

Microsoft is charging for online, and only making kinect games.

What's wrong with wanting to use all the features on the PS3?

It's wrong when these "features" are illegal.

I'm not acting like this is the first time an electronic device was hacked. I just don't want another company getting affected by what hackers do to their products. I don't care if the hacker mess with their own system offline, but if it carries over to pirating games or messing with online games I will get angry. I alreadyhad to deal with hackers on online matches in certain Wii games and I don't wantthe cows to get destroyed by what this annoying hacker and the pirates that are following him are doing.I think I shouldn't have used that nuclear weapon example, but then the PS3 hack can be very dangerous if it spreads too quickly. How Geohot's is dealing with this situation isn't helping either.

For real. You're advocating for anarchy there, general. And you admit he's destroying the industry... but because another entity is "destroying the industry more," it justifies, or rather, excuses his destruction? Pretty stupid. I would spit in the face of anyone whom admitted to donating to this guy's "fund" if I met them in real life.

1) The video game community and iPhone community are not the same type of users. Piracy has not been an issue on the App Store whereas it has cost developers millions upon millions in the gaming industry. It is so bad that governments are stepping in due to perceived economic impact. In the video game community, cheats, hacks, and piracy get totally abused. 2) The jailbroken iPhone was deemed legal on a DMCA exception. Video game consoles are not covered under the DMCA. Piracy on the App Store has not been any real issue. In fact its estimated that only 10% of iPhones are jailbroken and a vast majority of those is just for tethering and use on another carrier. If Apple didn't have the exclusive agreement with AT&T, the iPhone jailbreak would never happen and no one would care. That is what drove that whole deal. 3) GeoHotz knew what he had before he released it. He knew that pirates and hackers could take off and run with it to a level not seen before. He still released it anyway. This is not the same as jailbreaking an iPhone (see point #1). He shares in the responsibility. He didnt have to release the keys...period. 4) Not all of us pirate software. I have never pirated movies, music, software, games or anything else, and I dont mod my console. The hypocrites are the pirates that come on these forums and make useless arguments to justify their actions.

Good for him.

You can't hold Geohotz responsible for the actions of others. Sure he released the master key (or whatever it was), but he is in no way responsible for what people do with it. If someone decided to hack the PSN, that was their action, not his.

And no he doesn't deserve to have his life ruined for this. What has he done? Released some code? That what? Let some hacker ruin a mutliplayer match for you? Are people really that petty to condem another person because he ruined your Moden Warfare match? Really? Grow up.

The hypocrites are the pirates that come on these forums and make useless arguments to justify their actions.

Interesting read and now I must research this as well.I do agree with "point 1",but I would just say cheats, and piracy have been abused.I wouldn't tend to agree with hacks in the gaming community as much as I would say, cracks and mods.On your point 2,can you provide a link please?I would like to have a further read on the estimates.I have read a few different estimates and would just like to compare the articles.

..but yes I also agree with the exclusive agreement situation, and also your valid argument of the DMCA cover.

Now Geohotz cockiness and knowing what could and would happen here,is irrelevant in this case.Yes,he deserves part of the blame for doing it so publicly,in a manner to try and go head to head with Sony.I just don't believe that it should just be all be on him,the way it stands. He is taking a pretty big hit for the actions of others.Think of it like this.I release a guns modification schematics, you use those schematics to modify your gun, then go kill someone.Sure there's a chance I know that someone may kill someone using these modifications, but am I to blame for that? Not the greatest example but you get where i'm coming from.

Even if he started the chain reaction,he still didn't go out and say ok people....here's what you should do.Your 4th point is a major rarity.Your are in the minor percentage of people that do not pirate in any form or fashion.

Tbh,i think him and the Sony execs and lawyers should have a sit down after all of this and maybe talk about offering the guy a job.If anyones going to be able to keep security nice and tight,it will be people like him. That's just imo.

Good, I hope he wins. Geo is a moron and I won't deny that but if he loses the case it sets a precedent that tinkering with hardware I purchased can get me sued. I'm hoping he wins but also gets slammed somehow to learn a bit of humility.

I'm not a sony fanboy, but I hate developers getting affected by what that hacking group and Geohot's did.

super600
Not the same situation at all. Your nukes weren't being purchased by the average consume AND no ones lives were at risk.

^^This cept disagree on the moron part. He's obviously a genius looking at his track record.....but yes his cockiness behavior needs to be bought way down. Also it's not the Hardware Sony is going after him about. It's the software.

Hahahahaha what ? Piracy not an issue on the appstore ? Hundereds of thousands of people download apps illegally through Installous once they finish jailbreaking their ipods.

...and where is your proof that developers aren't supported?Or is this idle troll chatter?Just wonder where these "facts" you state are gathered.

No offense by the way.I'm just reading a lot of this sort of thing lately and want to know where it all comes from....outside of so and so business lays off x amount of workforce. That's not due to lack of support. That's due to a lot of people don't have the $$ to shell out on every game that comes out,or a mediocre game that last 6 hours in campaign,or a IP that comes out rehashed every year.

With all the bs games that come out and the sales of games down because of them....great games like Mirrors Edge 2 gets cancelled. The developers are supported.Just not the ones that make garbage.Cancel that, cause imo cod bo is garbage and look at the support that gets.

I'll be frank. Even if Sony looses they are going to drag this case out for as long as possible to put him in debt. Its the same thing with what activision is doing to theIW guys.

Wheres the proof that piracy won't be a problem with this jailbreak? Just because someone says so, doesn't mean it wasn't intended or true. Thats what I hate the most about this guy and that other team. The sleeping giant didn't want to be disturbed and now it sounds like they're begging for mercy. I, for one don't understand why anyone wants to run custom firmware and apps on their consoles. Why, when its so much easier (and legal) on PC? Why deal with the hassle, compatibility, and other things? What more do you need to do on your PS3? If you want a functioning PC, well you already have one. Freedom? Pretty sure you never had even the thought of running this stuff off the PS3.

You are correct though. Game prices are really high and now its finally flooding over to PC. Development costs, licensing fees, and publisher fees. They're killing themselves and thats why indie devs are very successful these days.

But the gaming community is stupid enough to donate to a guy that's causing stuff to get messed up, rather then the people that are contributing it. Key difference here.

Why doesn't he get a job?Ravensmash

Right. Working a minimum wage salary is clearly going to give him a good enough defense to battle a multi-million dollar corporation.

Now I see why I stopped coming to SW. People say the dumbest s*** that makes me want to gauge my eyes out..

"Why, when its so much easier (and legal) on PC?" This!

I could not agree with your more here. This is where it all boils down to pirating on consoles. The console player does not usually play PC games, outside of one or two.

The PC is the most free realm of all...but console players don't even to begin to know this (not knocking anyone btw). The hackers never bothered me.The modders and cheaters on the other hand.Yes,Geohotz & F.0. could have went about the otherOS and options features in a whole different manner.Quite pompous indeed. If it were went about differently, this matter wouldn't be where it is.
