No sarcasm is obvious on the internet o.o At this point he doesn't have much choice, but he should've known not to mess with them in the first place. No one would be stopping him from hacking his ps3 if he kept it to himself.

Activision is destroying the industry more. And so is every other publisher with their yearly releases, dumbing down games, making them shorter, day one DLC, price raises.

Microsoft is charging for online, and only making kinect games.

I think he likes his games for free, why pay for them right ? Dude gave a $50 dollar donation for the root key, i mean why not right ? Unlimited games that he will play for years to come and for what, a little $50 dollar donation. Cmon guys lets all donate and keep these hackers going.

You don't need cfw to exploit games online by faulty coding and mess ups by the developers that has been going on since the beginning of MP.

I'll just say I don't support what he did. Maybe I don't understand every tidbit of information but I know that releasing the necessary information online for everyone to hack their consoles was a move that hurts more than it does good.

As for donations? Something doesn't settle with me about how much in donations he received.

As long as my experiences as a gamer aren't hindered by cheaters or problems with games/PSN/PS3, I won't remember that this happened a year from now.

I want to pose a question to all the people going "but it unlocks OtherOS/they took away OtherOS!" What exactly is the point of having Linux on your Playstation 3? The only purpose I could think of is to have Linux on a server box, but even then you might as well just get a dedicated server box instead.

even though people will say they won't use it pirate games they will eventuality do it sometime down the line because the couldn't afford that one game and when they do to them its one game whats the harm then they do again when another game comes out that again can't afford

look what happen at the psp that thing got hacked badly now there is not that many good games on it is it a coincidence maybe

I know some sites which donated $500-1000 to him.
I myself also support him and donated $150 to the man.
Sony needs to back off they don't have the right to tell me what I can or can't do with something I bought with my own money.

This is hardly the "death of the console" or whatever. Do people really need to be reminded of how much the PC as an open platform is hacked, modded, pirated or whatever. Numerous threads on PC gaming being dead, but in my eyes it's more alive than ever. Guys, your favourite console's are not going anywhere. If your points were actually true PC gaming would have died a VERY long time ago, this is just the way things work...

No, they don't.

Hacking the PS3 doesn't have to be for piracy or for cheating. It can be for homebrew perfectly reasonably. Closed systems suck. Just because the hack may allow some people to pirate doesn't mean it was intended for piracy. Geohot is against that.

What homebrew then? All homebrew I heard about so far is trophy unlockers, pirating games, cheating etc. etc. A cheap PC is for homebrew. It is easier and it runs better.

:lol: its not his fault its Sony's fault for not having anything in place to stop this sort of thing, they were far too arrogant about their consoles security and now you pay the price. They should follow Valves example now and have anti cheat software, anybody caught bypassing it bang you can't get on secure servers any more and have to game with the rest of the cheaters. I don't cheat in games for the record and anything I have hacked is for different reasons (like my dvd player firmware) but I do agree that once you have paid for a product you should be able to do what you want with it.

I too believe that once you have bought and paid for something that you should be allowed to do whatever you want with it (within the obvious reasonable limits of the law) and if you have a legit PS3 and a legit copy of say Super Mario World for the SNES, both bought and paid for, then why shouldn't you be able to tinker around until you can get your own copy of the game to run on your own console.

Ok, educate me. What you can do on CFW on ps3 that is NOT illegal? Trophy unlockers, pirating, emulators, cheating in games... thats about all Ive seen on CFW so far.

Get a cheap PC. Homebrew is easier to make and runs better there. Why going through all this trouble on ps3? Its for stealing games and cheating. Maybe there are a few people who really like to play with ps3 but thats not the main focus.

1) PS3 is a living room device that is suppose to provide as much as possible to the home theatre setup, homebrew will provide even more capabilities, its only just happened give it time. 2) Emulators are nothing but a good thing, providing you have the original (legal or not, please, I dont care so dont bring it up, its stupid that its illegal if you own the old system and game, punishing buyers as usual). 3) Not everyone has a gaming PC, or interested in PCs..... so why cant they have more features on thier PS3s?

CFW is great because it turns your PS3 from a crippled PC to to full fledged one (edit: okay, semi-crippled... the GPU sucks today). Maybe Sony won't remove features next time

Uploading the master key online is no joke, he deserves whats coming to him and anyone who supports this fool are basically saying they agree with him uploading the master key and thus allowing all sorts of things to happen, i.e piracy!!

Yes because if anything the PS4 will be MORE open, and have MORE features which can be exploited. Or maybe it will be even more closed off with even more security measures because evidently Sony doesn't want to be hacked. Maybe there'll be CD keys or something, maybe games will be linked to just one profile so we can't share them. Most likely it will be something that affects me, the common gamer, just because a handful of people want "homebrew".

If you wanted an open platform you'd game on pc. A closed platform is what console gamers want.

What did geohot steal exactly? this key was required for opening up the system to homebrew. if he did crack it and keep it to himself what the hell would be the point in that? That key needed to go out to give the public homebrew. What other people do with it is beyond what he has done, like most things in life.

Oh this again, your telling me to grow up when things are released to the public all the time that have positive and negative effects, yet are deemed acceptable. yet some stupid software licening key that at worse lowers the millions a company earns is somehow horrific. seriously. "grow up", your being naive based on a bias towards a hobby. nothing more. I dont see any of you on this board protesting against anything else. There is no ignorance, he knew it, I knew it. But then, hes not the creator of the pirate disc loading software, hes not the creator of call of duty hacks. so, until he is, give it a fkin rest.

It doesn't have to be worse than the holocaust. This is the problem with the digital age. You think just because it's digital you have a right to do whatever you want with it. Sony isn't just a bunch of faceless CEO's. There are real employees responsible for your entertainment from that console. Any money lost hurts them first. You can make blanket statements about giant corporations with billions all you want. In the end it's the little guy who suffers because they are the first to get axed when profits don't exceed expectations.

You can be an accessory to murder. He's an accessory to piracy. Being involved in a crime in any which way still makes you a part of that crime. He's a link in the chain. Any adult who works hard for what they earn can see that because if someone felt entitled to the bread in your mouth you'd be upset. Just because you have billions doesn't entitle anyone to steal a penny from you.
