PS3 will eventually pass up Xbox, because Microsoft will end their support long before Sony does, but Microsoft still has a big lead because of the head start. Otherwise they woudl be neck and neck, but they are not.DumbDubya
Yeah I think like you sort of. I believe Microsoft will release a new Xbox soon and the PS3 will remain for a year more before a new console. Just my thoughts.

[QUOTE="Nonstop-Madness"]TC is just trying to say that despite the PS3's price, the PS3 is actually doing every well. In fact, the PS3 is actually selling faster than the 360. The PS3 reach 20 million units faster than the 360. It will probably reach 30 million faster than the 360. By faster I mean for example (not correct info) the PS3 sold 20 million in 2 years while the 360 took 3 years. 8 million more consoles sold with 1 year head start isnt really that big of a lead. Every console sells around 9 million consoles each yearcool_beans1

No,the 360 has been outselling the PS3 every week worldwide since last september. It actually has not been selling faster than the 360 for quite some time now,and the year over year monthly sales for the PS3 have dropped significantly. At this rate the 360 will reach future milestones faster.

Well I'm sure the 360 streak is coming to a halt with K2 out. The PS3 has about 28k compared to about 9k for 360 but yea they still have a long way to catch up.

28K to 9K,are you using Japan sales only?K2 ?it didnt move enough consoles to outsell the 360.

I guess after the price drop of 360 to 199$ etc, it outsells PS3 2:1 in US and who knows how much outside US too, so things have changed, PS3 offers no BC at double the 360 price right now, and 360 outsells by much

Also PS3 had all those poeple from PS2 that waited for the price drop to 400$ from the 500-600$ it was initailly, that is why it sold so well then, right now it is not doing anywhere close as good as 360

Its not selling as well because the 360 is a better choice for a lot of people. There are still a lot of people buying PS3's but the price and the lack of an involved community which translates to many other things like lack of advertisement, specific type of games like RPG's, developer support is just not there etc. There is a community but HOME is not the answer Sony wants it to be. Sony is just hurting themselves by not giving gamers what they expect. What Sony needs to do is bring something to there system that people are familiar with and build on that with revolutionary ideas. IMO GOW3, Price Cut and a Big Firmware Update and all that Sony needs to succeed this year so the PS3 can reach its stride. Sony has always been able to push there console into an unstoppable stride. After the PS2 hits its stride, goodbye have a nice day.

EDIT: damn im bad at spelling, this is what happens when you use Spell check to much.

Actually small linear games like KZ2, MGS4, Uncharted 2 and GOW3 is the last thing PS3 needs. It needs more huge RPG's and games that stay, and you get attached to with a hero, than action titles for a day or two

That is why 360 lineup is by miles stronger for me

Most people actually dont have the same taste as you (not trying to diss you or anything). RPG's are really fun to play, there hands down the most in-depth gaming genre. Its a proven fact that people dont like to get out of there comfort zone. For exmaple, it would be a hard choice for a PS2 owner to walk into a Best Buy knowing nothing about the 360 and comparing it a PS3 and ultimatly choosing 1. If the PS3 has games that, that gamer is used to .... he's going to go with the PS3. Other things go into choosing a console like price which might chance the gamers mind etc but thats just one way that Sony should sell there console.

[QUOTE="Stevo_the_gamer"]The Playstation brand name as always been strong and popular, I don't see why this is surprising that the PS3 is slowly, but surely, gaining ground. Granted even if the Xbox 360 didn't sell a single console ever again, it would still take the PS3 almost a year to pass the Xbox 360. That lead is quite substantial no matter how you slice it. Not like it's important anyways though.kingtito
How is it "slowly but surely gaining ground" when the 360 outsold it last year? Isn't that actually losing groung?

Only in NA. But it is funny to see both so close, with the wii way ahead.

yup, I've said this time and time again (as seen in one of my old blog posts). Also, despite the PS3 costing more, both consoles sold almost exactly the same amount in 2008, and this is only after the 360 caught up to the PS3's 2008 sales after M$ drastically slashed the price of the 360.

Would you like to know why that is ? Its because of MGS4. Its PS2 owners comfort zone to stick to familiar games like MGS. Losing exclusives like FF and Tekken will hurt Sony harder than they think it will.

I truly do find it stupid that people keep asking themselves that question. This has nothing to do with the PS3 being great or not, it's the power of the Playstation name brand.

True that didn't help as much as before in any way but the biggest factor right now for the PS3's success (except for being one of the cheapest blu-ray players and bla bla bla) is the Playstation name which is still popular today. It helped the PS3 sell a certain quantity but I don't believe it'll do as much good as it did in the 2 past generations.

But you forgot to mention that PS3 had a huge price cut from 500-600$ to 400$, far before 360 got its own at 200$

Just in case you are looking for a reason PS3 sold great at that period

360 after its price cut, outsold PS3 2:1 for two months in a row in holiday, and outsold it in both january-february

How is PS3 selling at a faster rate ???

It just sold a bit faster for a few months, before 360 got to 199$

On the flip side, despite the notorious claims that the 360's failure rate is so high, it still sells as good as PS3 and the last few months, better.

A price cut and a new SKU may have had a say in that.

And the removal of BC can counter that, but PS3 still outsold the 360 on a monthly basis in 2008 until M$ got desperate and slashed the price of the 360, and even then both consoles virtually tied and sold over 10 million consoles each by the end of 2008.

PS3's been out for lets say, 2 years. 21/2 = 10.5 million units/year

SilverChimera

You can't apply an average of units per year since there is no consistant rate of sales each and every month. Meaning what 360 sold in one year is not the same it sold in each year following, and same with the PS3. So it was not a matter of 360 selling 9M in each of its 3 years nor PS3 selling 10.5M in 2007 and 10.5M in 2008.

360 had a big sales rush in the 1st 5-6 months when it was released, being the hot new item on market. The sales dipped down as that craze for the "new" toy faded where all the early adopters out there got their piece. Then with each price drop, sales of 360 picked up and will continue to accelerate as more and more people get brought in by that peak selling price.

The same would follow suit for PS3. Small peak when it's brand new, the excitement for its launch, which then sees a decline as the high price holds back the general consumer. And now that it's $400 sales have picked up, but still not as much as if it were $200, which is a ways off.

Point being, you can't use past years sales as an indicator for future sales, as the changes in price affects market trends.

uh, why would Sony need an excuse for tying the 360 in 2008 sales despite 360 costing 1/2 as much? Don't you think it's M$ that needs an excuse for why, in 2008, the 360 sold nearly the exact amount of PS3s that were sold in 2008?

Barely? Do you know what that "barely" means? The difference is equivalent to 31% of the PS3's current sales. That's pretty significant. You should not be allowed to work with money.

I think the better question is why are you still calling it an excuse. Maybe you should've taken economics 101, MS's "excuse" for dropping the prices of 360's is because they could, knowing they wouldn't lose money from every unit sold.

I think it's more of a massive shock that the 360 is winning at all, even with the year head start, consider how poorly the xbox 1 did compared to the ps2 last gen.

The PS3 is not catching up, the 360's lead is exactly what it was when the PS3 launched, if not greater. PS3 launched in November and MS didnt announce 10.5 shipped till January (and that number was achieved through stuffing the retail pipe), so its a safe bet thet MS hadent sold more then 8-9 million when the PS3 launched. The 360's lead is currently 8-9 million and growing.

Caliming the PS3 is catching up because of higher yealy average is not valid because sales change from year to year. MS sold the fewest consoles in the first year, sales have increased every year since then at least matching Sony. If you take the average since launch it is lower then the PS3 but the PS3 is not catching up because the 360 has sold the same since it launched.

Example

360 first year 8 million, next two years 10 million.

28 / 3 = 9 million.

PS3 sells 10 million in its first two years

20 / 2 = 10 million

When the PS3 launched the 360 was already at 8 million but both have sold the same since then so the lead is the same despite the higher average for the PS3.

I wish I was barely rich then...

Have yea dove into RacePRO?

Yes I have actually, and I love it. I started playing it for the first time with the wireless racing wheel and I honestly can't play it with a controller. Oddly enough, Race Pro with the wheel feels much much better than Forza 2 with the wheel. Race Pro is the total package for me. It's everything I expected and more. :D

just a quick question:

how many of you (the consumers) care about the sales? shouldn't you leave the worry to MS and Sony?

sales do not affect the people buying the piece of hardware.

Sales do effect the consumer. People who bought a Dreamcast at launch got much less value out of the machine during its lifetime the those who bought a PS2. The 360's sales compared to the PS3 have gained it quite a few high profile games that would have never come to the system if this generation mirrored the last.

Neither the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are at risk of becoming the next Dreamcast, so it's pointless to fret over sales now.

[QUOTE="djsifer01"]Who cares about sales numbers we all know the PS3 is the best console on the market.obamanian

It has one RPG for me, when i have 35+ on 360 !!!!

Also the best versions of most multiplatforms and especially Fallout 3 that i care mostly about !!!

So much for the "best" console, in 2009 is 1000x worst than 360 too, 360 gets all the hu8ge 50-100 hours games, and all the RPGs again

Yes in your opinion. It's not like you>everyone else. What if he's just a big Killzone fan as you're a RPG fan? Then in HIS opinion the PS3 is the best console.. Try and look longer than to the tip of your nose..

you know whats sad MS probably didnt think they would beat Sony in only 2 generations. I can only imagine how much worse it can be for Sony next gen when its brand recognition alone doesnt sell 5 million consoles.

Good job ignoring my last sentence. Console sales do affect the consumer and it is happening right now.

or...

PS3 is double what a X360 costs and still.....Sony can't seem to make dime.

Sounds like someone didn't think out there business model to well. No but sersiously, are you trying to point out that Sony fanboys are dedicated to Sony even if there machine is overpriced and has to few good games. If so, I agree it's very sad.

What strange world do you live in if 7 million units more is "barely"?

BigDaddyPOLO

with a year headstart and only half the price. theyre only a sega saturn apart in sales. the ps3 will easily get that 7 mill and more with a price drop.

You're saying a year headstart as if it was some dirty trick. It's not like the 360 won't have any more price drops.

well if microsoft had waited, instead of rushing the gate, then they probually wouldnt have the RROD problem that they had.. they wouldnt have lost billions but the ps3 might have been ahead in says. nope it would have been ahead in sales, so i guess the 2nd place lead does come witha price

So we are two years after the PS3's launch, and the difference is 8 millions. Mmmm. Those are bad numbers for Sony, actually, if they are planing to catch up the 360.

Yah, but the PS3 was planned to release sooner than it did, so it's not like MS was planning on some huge year head start. It's impressive that with the flaws of the system that the games alone on the system still make it sell faster than the PS3.

PS3 will eventually pass up Xbox, because Microsoft will end their support long before Sony does, but Microsoft still has a big lead because of the head start. Otherwise they woudl be neck and neck, but they are not.DumbDubya

Wow, I agree with the alt account.

Umm...in what world is 8 million considered "barely"? :?

Synthetic_NinJI

In System Wars ofcourse :)

Exaggerated, sure..but with a year head start, cheaper price tag, more support and gaming library, the 360 COULD be doing better. Keep in mind the PS3's later start, fewer good titles (at the time) HIGH costs.

Keep in mind that for a console that is supposed to "catch up", the PS3 SHOULD be doing a lot better.

Lol, but it IS catching up, it IS improving, it IS selling well...look at the current library of good titles and future titles. It's doing GOOD ENOUGH considering how it started off.
