ps3 lacks a true killer app

You do realize that it was Rare, Ubisoft, and Bethesda that were making games for the 360 when it launched and through 06, while Sony has had no one making games for them except Ninja Theory and Factor 5.

The thing has sold almost 5 million though...that is pretty amazing.

i'm guessing killzone 2 will be a killer app because of hype/sony marketing first and foremost. Remember the gears of war ads, that must of had a really big impact. it was a brand new i.p. Think how much hype killzone has right now. If reviewers like it and give it AAA's sony will have Advertisments making sure people know this.I'm not gonna be foolish and say AAA guranteed. but it'll probably be a killer app

the problem is, and this goes for the ps3 and 360, is that these consoles appear to have been FLOODED with sequels its just "worse" with the ps3 because it's been the one thats been getting ports of sequels and its been a pretty bad stigma for the ps3 so i dont see why being hopeful of an new IP is bad.... just the whole "OMGZ its a new IP, chalk up another AAA game (that has yet to be released) so i can ee where your coming from with this but just remeber why people get hyped with new IP's

I know why people get hyped, I am looking forward to lair, bioshock, mass effect just as much as the next guy, but you don't see me running around saying every game I hope will be good. I know lemmings are just as bad about hyping games AAA, and bashing the other console. I can be a bit more lenient to the lemmings though, because the PS3 really has no great games right now, where as cows try to dismiss all the great 360 games. The PS3 has R6:V, Oblivion, and Resistance, that is about it. 2 of those games are on the 360 as well.

The same thing was said about the 360 until GeoW came out. PS3 hasn't reached that point in its lifecycle yet and its supposed to be harder to develop for. I don't understand why people hold PS3 at a higher regard than the mighty 360. Same with madden. 3rd madden on the 360 finally reaches 60 FPS yet the PS3 was supposed to get there in 2 iterations. Well after all the hype Sony put forth for the PS3, it is only logical to expect MORE out of it, than it's competition can offer. Next gen doesn't start til we say so, 4d gaming, etc. They MADE people hold the PS3 to a higher standard, it is their fault it is not living up to it as well. Don't hype and under deliver, maybe they will learn a valuable lesson for next gen.

I'd like to point out that MGS4 and FF13 are rumored to appear on the 360. Also I automatically distrust any info on Killzone 2 because I recall the cows used the same rhetoric for Killzone 1 and look how that turned out. Ok well first of all, one killer app game like halo or ssbb doesn't make a system. If you seem to remember, the gamecube and xbox may have had those"killer apps" but they sold like crap compared to the ps2.The ps3's lineup for 07' is quite solid with a lot of great looking quality games like Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and clank, Lair, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and of course Earlier versions of Haze and UT3 ( for which ps3 get to use mods and keyboard/mous), not to mention the popular online title from ps2 socom and warhawk. All in all this seems like quite a good ps3 holiday season, something reminiscent of the ps2 which had several quality games at a time like this. Not to mention, ps3 has several killer app franchises such as Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, Killzone, Gran Turismo, and even Ratchet and Clank can be considered quite an attractive franchise considering the games have sold millions of copies. Finally sony has at least 100 million potential customers in the ps2, people who adored these same franchises even though they are not halo, and who are waiting to pounce on a ps3 once their favorite franchise comes out whether it be ratchet and clank, mgs, final fantasy. So really if you look at, the ps3 has several killer app franchises and a good quanitity of exclusive coming out this holiday and next year.

The fighting mechanics are not much better than Double Dragon! The game is a joke. Tekken, SF, VF, DOA are all excellent true fighter games. Smash brothers is a casual trash of a game that is nothing more than a button masher--so how does this count as a killer app? Oh and I can see you pulling the "oh but its popular card"--well so is Mario Party-but that game is trash too. What about Madden--it is uber popular, but I don't think anyone would ever consider it to be a "great" game.

And it seems that your definition of a killer app is seriously flawed. You seem to only be counting multiplayer type games--of the online variety. Last time I checked MGS, FF, GoW, RC, Jak, Twisted Metal, etc could all be considered killer apps--yet they don't have online functions (well for the most part they don't). Just because Lair, Uncharted, HS, R&C do not have that much multiplayer built into the game does not take away from the killer app status. They all look to be amazing.

Anywho--if you are only counting multiplayer online--RFoM has excellent 40 player online, Motorstorm has insane online, Warhawk got rave beta reviews, Socom anyone?, UT3 (it won't be out on 360 until Spring--so I guess by all of the peoples arguements on Oblivion not counting for PS3 then this won't count for 360, but in all seriousness it still will, however--the PS3 supports Mouse and Keyboard and Modds--so it wins hands down). Well there are three online great PS3 games off the top of my head that are coming out this fall.

3. PS3 is losing 3rd party support? Really? People are mentioning GTA, RE, and DMC. Well GTA has never been exclusive and didn't RE come out first on GC and had several exclusive RE games on GC? So how is Sony losing RE support exactly? Oh thats right--its NOT! DMC is the only one that I see--Wow, one game. And Katamari--you even mentioned this is really funny. Too bad you forget to mention that the devs are creating a new IP that is exclusive to the PS3.

I will agree that it is most likely that some 3rd parties are going to make multiplat games instead of exclusive (not because of PS3 sales or problems that fanboys makeup, but because it is so expensive to make games for next gen systems that devs are going to have to make games multiplat just to make a profit)--but the bottom line is that you can still play them on the PS3--last time I checked. Its not like DMC is not coming out for the PS3 as well. Then the fact that Sony's first party studios are where most of the Playstation killer games come from--Twisted Metal, Crash, Socom, Gow, Jak, R&C, Uncharted, HS, Lair, GT, Killzone 2, and the list can go on into the night.

He is right that Sony was counting on brand loyalty to sell something that was less for more. PS3 took the emphasis off gaming to improve upon other branches of the corporation and Blu Ray is the biggest example. Those drives are pricey and just imagine how much more powerful they could have made PS3 if they did not take that road and used the money on important things like video memmory and CPU. Brand loyalty is the reason they thought they could get away with it. Unfortunately for them you are correct and many people have switched camps because they want the most out of their game dollar. The most stalwart cows are just the ones who are in love with their memmories of PS1 and 2 and think that SONY is a sure bet forever. Nostalgia does tend to cloud judgement though.L1qu1dSword

Variety.....the PS2 or the PS1 never had a game like Halo 3 and SSBB that had a 33% attach rate and there is a reason, their fans had their choice of solid games from ALL genres. The Xbox and GC were very limited in variety. Dependancy on one franchise does not lead to success.

I am not going to declare the PS3 dead because of its launch games and first year games riddled with ports from a completely different architecture. I am not that short sighted. It looks like some amazing games are coming out for the system around xmas. Around the same time as GeoW came out in the 360s lifecycle.

Warhawk anyone? Yeah it may not be no killer app, but I can already see from what alot of gaming sites have been saying that the warhawk beta was alot funner then the halo 3 beta. That alone shows the potential for warhawk, and yes it will be a game us ps3 owners will enjoy for a few years if u want to talk about play value.squallff8_fan

No, Warhawk is not more fun than Halo 3. Get that out of your head right now. I was in the Beta. Don't believe that for a split second.

Warhawk's online options are robust, but to compare it to Halo is to comapre the core gameplay and gameplay experience. they do not compare.
