Since apparently saying the words FF13 were enough to win the rpg battle for 2005, 2006 and 2007 I don't see why that would change for 2008 and 2009. Congrats PS3.

All Sony has to do to stay in the lead is never release any J-RPG's, look at how well that has worked so far. The fans are happy so why actually go through the trouble of making and releasing any games? :P

[QUOTE="st1ka"]

[QUOTE="NinjaMunkey01"]apart from oblivion I am not a huge RPG fan, but what is the RPG lis fot the 360 and ps3?whybuyaxbox360

360 vs PS3? right now is Folklore for the PS3 and blue dragon lost odyssey and eternal sonata for the 360

oh and TC: the DS is king and queen when it comes to RPGs this generation

FFXIII > anything (RPG wise) Xbox360 has to offer...

Malta_1980

lets wait until the game is out shall we? after the terrible X-2 11 and the okish 12 im not too sure about 13

just cuz 2 games out of 12 were meh dont mean nuthing.....also u forgot about godly FF7 crisis core which is AAA btw FYI

actually i said 3 games, the thing is 3 out of the last 4 games have been trash, crisis core seems to be the only exception (i havent played the game so i dont know. but i did hear a lot of criticism)

wait someone acctually compared ME to FF? lmfao flop effect will never ever be greater than FF sorry lemmings....Mass Flop will never be anything more than you guessed it...a epic flop.whybuyaxbox360

personally i like Mass effect more then i liked FF IX,X, X-2, 11 and 12 but then again i guess your name speaks for itself

Now let's look at Upcoming JRPG titles

360: Infinite Undiscovery (I'm not trying to be fanboyish here, but I really don't know what else is coming. Feel free to let me know whats up)

PS3: FFXIII, FFvXIII, White Knight, Star Ocean 4. Disgaea 3 (although it looks like a freaking PS2 game).

Unless all these games end up sucking really hard, It looks like sony has it in the bag.

leadernator

you forgot Tales of vesperia for the 360, also remember that those 360 games are comming all out in 08, if im not mistaken all the PS3 games you said are coming out in 2009. Next year we will probably hear more 360 JRPGs

(also wasnt star ocean going to be a multiplat?)

360 is RPG king right now (that's not saying much), but I think PS3 will take the lead next year with FF13, FFvs13, WKC, Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles and I have a strong feeling Star Ocean 4 and KH3 will be on PS3.

That doesn't mean that the 360 isn't the RPG king. That just means that if the King has problems, the peasants must REALLY suck.

Yes and if you have not heard Square has openly been saying they want to badly apeal more to the western market. So this will clearly set the stage for a possible port of FF13 after all it's based on a multiplat graphic engine. So go figure that one:roll:

Also this is further possibilities very likely possibilities that we will see future FF or all future square projects starting to make there ways on 360 and most definitely Xbox 720. Being MS clearly owns the US for gaming over Sony these days.

It's kind of a wash this month. MGS4 on PS3 and NG2 on 360. I'll have both so i'm set.

I do think that thw whole PS3 owns 08 has been thrown completlty out the window. It looks like 360 will have very strong second half of the year. Gears 2 Fable 2 Too Human Infinite Underdiscovery to name a few.

The real honest truth here is the 360 is the current RPG KING. And there is no reason to say otherwise. Sure PS3 will have some RPG's. And yes most will opt out to use old faithful FF13 in 2014 or whenever it comes out 09/10 i guess at the earliest.

But clearly the 360 has been the leader in RPG's this gen. And seems to be ready to defend that crown for several more years to come.

I'll list many many titles if requested. Other wise only a brainwashed in denial fanboy would argue other wise.

mustaf_nur89

Final Fantasy XIII.

Does not matter it not out yet. It sad but true the PS3 is last place for any JRPG fans. Until the games are able to be in their hands.

Sorry bro, but the 360 loses that crown as soon as FFXIII and/or FFvsXIII come out.

Just an observation, but some Sony fans seem to be brand-name drones.

Everytime somebody mentions something that Splinter Cell does better than MGS (and there are a few things), cows will ignore the argument by saying that MGS is the greatest because it is MGS, which is the greatest.

Everytime somebody mentions something that Forza does better than Gran Turismo, cows will ignore the argument by saying that GT is the greatest because it is GT, which is the greatest.

In this thread, I see the same kind of thing happening. Some posters are trying to give 360 props with Mass Effect, Lost Odysee and Eternal Sonata and cows come in here with that "FFXIII will own them all and make PS3 RPG King, because it is FF, which is the greatest" garbage without telling us why it'll own, other than being a household name.

These argument are lazy and should be comitted to an intellectual dumpster.

I wouldn't say that just yet. And besides, let's see how Valkyria Chronicles, White Knight Story, and Disagea 3 fares first. Their competition on the 360 will most likely be Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey, and of course Mass Effect. A perfect match-up if you ask me.

Yeah, I'm starting to see that same mentality from some of the Halo fans. I mostly brought up Sony fans, because I observed this behavior coming from them in this thread. But to be honest, I see it more from them overall. Perhaps it's because their franchises are older.

That makes sense. But seeing as the TC's (Who has the reputation of being a MASSIVE Lemming and a bandodger) opening post was unbelievably fanboyish, I can't really blame the Cows for reacting the way they did. The TC said "Other wise only a brainwashed in denial fanboy would argue other wise."- that's just asking to be flamed.

Now that I think about it, I agree that Fable 2 is an RPG, but Too Human as far as I've heard is mostly an action game and technically not an RPG though it does have some elements of one. As Baldur do you walk into towns or cities and talk with the locals when you're not fighting?

have you ever played diablo 2? its an RPG (heck i think it was PC and RPG of the year in gamespot in 2001)

all you do is fight, and the cities only have 4 or 5 NPCs, didnt stop the game from being awesome

That's the whole point. 360 has many more now and will have more before PS3 start getting anything really. And it's beauce of the blind fanboy goggles that prevent them to understand any reasoning once so ever.

some people would argue that Fable is more RPG then final fantasy is

as for too human its a diablo type game so yes its an RPG

st1ka

Now that I think about it, I agree that Fable 2 is an RPG, but Too Human as far as I've heard is mostly an action game and technically not an RPG though it does have some elements of one. As Baldur do you walk into towns or cities and talk with the locals when you're not fighting?

have you ever played diablo 2? its an RPG (heck i think it was PC and RPG of the year in gamespot in 2001)

all you do is fight, and the cities only have 4 or 5 NPCs, didnt stop the game from being awesome

But does Too Human have towns with NPCs you can talk to?

to be honest dont believe half of the people here that said they didnt like FF11 it was an MMO afterall and if you had played it you wouldnt have listed it in the list of failed FF games as it was on the PC and 360 not the PS3.

owning both consoles is a huge bonus as i get to play the few good RPG's we have out right now and i have the awesome lineup to look forward to in the future.

The RPG elements are indeed more then skin deep.

Here is a bit of a taste.

But then, the game is essentially an extension of Diablo which makes a major critique of the combat rather superfluous. Massive numbers of enemies are tossed at you at once and the hook to keep playing through the game multiple times is to level up your character (all the way to 50 on the first leg of the trilogy alone) and find sweet loot. The basic "push a button and get a reward" game psychology is here in full force. Just within the first hour of the game we came across a huge variety of upgrades. Six separate armor pieces, each of which changes your appearance when swapped, and numerous melee and gun classes are up for grabs. And the swords do feel different than the hammers and staves. Not everything can be equipped -- some require certain levels, skills or classes to be used -- but there is no shortage of loot to be found and toyed with.

The RPG mechanics go deeper than leveling up and managing equipment. A stats screen keeps track of your playtime, defensive and offensive statistics, as well as providing numbers for all of the standard RPG categories. It also showed a token list for each of the four worlds (Hel, Hall of Heroes, Ice Forest, and World Serpent) which we assume would be special hidden bonuses.

That big guns are no joke. Then there's the skill tree, blueprints, and runes; three aspects of the game we only got a small glimpse of. There are only five ****s, plus perhaps more on the way as downloadable extras, but even two players with the same ****can have radically different abilities. The skill tree unlocks at level five, which came at the tail end of the area we were allowed to play in. It won't be possible to unlock every skill, we're told, requiring each player to choose which branches to invest in. You'll also have to choose whether to align yourself with humans or machines; one providing more attack moves while the other gives you access to extra weapons and weapon functions, including a massive cannon. The runes, meanwhile, provide little side quests of sorts and reward you with small stat or skill bonuses upon completion. Each requires a small task to be complete in the game, such as to kill 25 enemies with explosives, but they must be equipped to activate the quest.

If there's one thing that our time with gave us, it was a desire to see more of the game. The RPG mechanics are solid, even if the combat isn't quite all there yet. Everything is still in the works, which makes this game so intriguing. We can give the combat a pass for now as it isn't quite finished and may evolve drastically as the game progresses to become more in-depth. We saw only an hour of the game and reached level seven with just a few skills and a fraction of the story revealed to us. And it still was a bit overwhelming. The later level content sounds great, especially since the game is designed to be played through multiple times with friends as the enemy placement and loot drops change each time. Don't count Too Human out yet. You might be sorry you did.

Thats what is so FREAKING AWESOME. The loot drops change on the fly each time you play. This game is going to be sick. You can also change your character with the skill tree each time you play online.

i also wasnt too impressed with X, but i can see the quality in the game, cant say the same for three above

EDIT: also operation darkness will also be launched before final fantasy

The Playstation 3 has won the SJPRG genre, tbh.

Yes, one of the most least significant genres ftw!
