Sony PS2 sold like hotcakes, and yet it wasnt enough steam for their PS3 to blast past the 360, evne with a year head start, which by the way is every COWS excuse as to why PS3 is still in last place! It's in last place, not because it came out a year early, but because of slow sales due to lack of games (in the beginning) and an extremely high launch price, followed shortly by the removal of features both hardware and software. It didn't start selling like crazy until the price dropped significantly. Even still, some developers still consider it a hard system to program for in terms of getting full power out of it vs the 360.
PS3 is a failure ocmpared the the PS2, since the PS2 set the bar way too high and Sony got arrogant. Xbox 1 set the bar really low, but it was also their first entry in the market, and seeing as the second entry has done so well, I would guess they have big plans for the third entry. I'm quite shocked that the ps3 hasn't outsold it already, that only means that MS has stolen a lot of marketshare from Sony. That, in my books, is a big win for MS. At this point in the race, it doesn't even matter who wins now, because it's getting close to the end of this generation. Had this not been a "double length" generation, Sony would have lost the race years ago.
Seems three is a bad number, when you look at the N64 (nintendo's third console) losing their market share, and PS3 (son'y third console) losing its market share... I suppose its MS turn next round.

IMO for a console that is often said to be more powerful, its easier to develop for, has "more" games, has 1 year head start on the market and the company responsible for it spends untold truck loads of crash piling money so it can climb it to the top (ads, exclusive dlcs...) a system like that being almost topped by the PS3 in sales and overtaken is in reach... thats a loss already for the 360 in my book. ... you managed to troll nearly all the hardcore lemming on SW with this, you deserve some sort of award for providing so much lulz.Had this not been a "double length" generation, Sony would have lost the race years ago.Had 360 not released a year earlier, 360 would've lost the race years ago. See what I did there?Phazevariance
And besides, it doesn't matter who releases a new console first. Did Sega releasing Dreamcast first mean that they won the gen prior with Saturn? Hell no!
I gave my 360 to my boys...I bought a PS3. Its nice and ahead of the 360 in many ways. BUT this gen belongs to 360...I dont even care that the Wii has supposedly sold more. EVERYONE has a 360. Its the "PS2" of this gen. The PS3 will outsell the 360 but thats after MS has moved on to the 720. Sony better get its price right, its processors right, and SONY better gets its marketing right or SONY will never regain anything after this gen.
[QUOTE="myke2010"]
Xbox increased it's marketshare significantly and has made a profit. Sony lost most of it's market share along with the money it made last gen. That's what I call MS doing leaps and bounds better than Sony.
Also, Sony didn't gain any brand recognition this gen. They used to be synonymous with console gaming last gen to the degree that Nintendo was with the orignal NES. Now you are much more likely to hear about the 360 or Wii than you are the PS3.
Finally, why do you bring up Sony's other systems? They have nothing to do with the fact that the PS3 has performed far worse for Sony than anyone could have predicted. It makes about as much sense as bringing up the success of Windows to justify 360 getting stomped by the Wii.

You wanna talk about marketshare, profitability, and brand recognition... but don't understand what Sony's other systems have to do with those factors?
No, I understand those factors perfectly. I just don't see how they're relevant to the the PS3 performing poorly this gen. It's like saying the Apple Pippen was awesome becuase the iPod was such a big success. The success or failure of Sony's other products doesn't change the fact that the PS3 sold far under expectations.
You also gotta think about how when the PS3 released the slim there was a huge flock of 360 users who bought it.
Its certainly possible that this could happen. Honestly, though, whatever you think about Sony or Microsoft, there has been quite a power shift this generation. Microsoft definitely took some wind out of the Playstation sails. I remember that PS2 absolutely dominating last generation. With the PS3, this hasn't really been the case.

If Sony can match its PS2 sales of 140+ million with a system that was initially double the price of the PS2, I would call that a huge accomplisment. No use making these predictions now anyway. For all we know the final tallies could end up being 95 mil Wiis, 100 mil 360s, and 140 mil PS3s.It does not matter is Sony takes second or not. They have been reduced to just one of the crowd in comparison to their PS2 success. Sony fired all of their staff that made the PS2 successful due to their absolute failure coming out the gate with the PS3. Sony has gone from 75% market share to less than 33%. Let that sink in for a moment. On the other hand Msoft has increased its market share, and turned a sizeable profit to boot. But second place for Sony is a win

Also makes little difference, since 360 outsells PS3 by 10 million in US, where it matters and are same in Europe, os 360 has the most important markets

Well you weren't saying PS3. You were saying Sony. Sony's game division has multiple platforms, so if you wanna talk Sony, you're talking about all three. You can't really talk about the PS3 losing all of its marketshare... because marketshare doesn't transfer from product to product. And if you wanna talk Sony's market share, it serves to note that the PS2 has outsold the PS3 and 360 this gen. Same with the PSP. :|
I suppose you can't really argue the PS3 has not met sales expectations, if only because expectations are completely up to the individual. If your expectation was the PS3 would sell around the rate of the PS2, then you're right. But that was an awfully optimistic expectation you had. If the expectation was that it would sell around the rate of the PS1, then it has come close to expectations this far in (about two million less sold in the same time frame, iirc). If the expectation was that it would do far worse than either of those two, then it has outperformed.
Personally, I don't see the reasoning that the PS3 had to meet/exceed PS2 sales to be considered a success. That would be like saying every Michael Jackson album after Thriller was a failure because they didn't become the new greatest selling album of all time, every Pokemon game has failed since Red/Blue, and Inception was a disaster for not out-grossing The Dark Knight...

This is so sad, that there are people still out there that think that the 360 is ahead of the PS3. here is a little eye opener for everyone.
360 44.6 million divided by 5 years = 8.92 million sold per year.
PS3 41.6 million divided by 4 years = 10.4 million sold per year.
lets even this out now shall we?
360 8.92 million sold per year multiplied by 5 years = 44.6 million sold in 5 years.
PS3 10.4 million sold per year multiplied by 5 years = 52 million sold in 5 years.
If both consoles came out at the same time 5 years ago, the PS3 would have a 7.4 million console lead.
Sorry people but PS3 has been outselling 360 for awhile now. Its pretty sad that MS has to have a year head start just to be able skew their numbers to make people think that they're winning the HD Console Gaming War, when in fact they aren't even close to the sales per year that Sony is getting.
You all can keep that blind fold on, mines been off for awhile now and I'll continue to see it how it is. The Law of Averages always evens out.
I think a reason why the PS3 has done so well is mostly due to Blu-Ray. The PS3 was the major driving foce behind the success of Blu-Ray, and now that it has become mainstream, people will buy a PS3 over a Wii or 360.
That's quite impressive that the PS3 is only 3 million lower than the 360.
This reminds me when the PS2 got off to a slow start against the DC.
I've read that actually the PS3 could surpass the 360 in sales by Christmas or 2011 January.
