Considering that the next gen systems are most likely right around the corner, big deal. If the best Sony can do this gen is catch up to the next to last place console, that's just sad. What would be hilarious though would be if Nintendo released whatever next gen system that will replace the Wii and it also passes the PS3 in sales before the PS3 can catch up to the 360.

djsifer01

Right around the corner? Your in for a big disappointment. Next gen consoles are 4-5 years away. A console that had a year late start and a 600 dollar price tag is only a few million behind the 360. Looking pretty sad for MS, actually:D

Maybe, maybe not. Wii sales are beginning to plateau and a next gen Wii probably wouldn't cost Nintendo all that much to develop if they carry on this gen's philosophy regarding lower end hardware to maintain their profit margins. A 2012 release for a new Nintendo console wouldn't surprise me in the least.

In regards to sad for MS, I'm fairly certain MS doesn't think doubling their marketshare while making a decent profit is sad in the least.

The damage is done. They have actually won already. All they needed to do is get established in the household. The Xbox is just as recognizable a brand name in video games worldwide as is Sony or Nintendo.

shinrabanshou

I would hazard to say that it isn't worldwide compared to Sony or Nintendo, or rather isn't compared to PlayStation and Nintendo.

As a brand it's become established and strong in the US and UK.

Nintendo's 30+ year history in the industry and the dominance of the PS1 and still-at-retail PS2 over the course of over a decade cemented both of those brands, at least for now, as synonymous with gaming worldwide. Although much damage was done to the latter this gen, and the former over the previous two gens.

But you don't get that level of brand recognition by coming a distant second place twice.

If you are looking for a video game system today you damn well know the xbox brand as well as the other two IN EVERY MARKET.. You may not like it and won't buy it, but you know it's there.I'm not talking about popularity, I'm talking about brand recognition.Microsoft is already known as a company worldwide and they push the Xbox as hard as they do Windows. You are confusing what I said with how popular Sony and Nintendo are. I'm just talking about people knowing they exist and what they are doing.

Even in Japan where it is pretty much laughed at, people know it's there.

the only reason ps3 is catching up is because of japan, where it sells about 500-600 000 more consoles than the xbox every month. Japanese only buy japanese consoles. Americans should start buying only american consoles but that will never happen. Americans usually buy 99% of their stuff from china so what do you expect.

Xbox increased it's marketshare significantly and has made a profit. Sony lost most of it's market share along with the money it made last gen. That's what I call MS doing leaps and bounds better than Sony.

Also, Sony didn't gain any brand recognition this gen. They used to be synonymous with console gaming last gen to the degree that Nintendo was with the orignal NES. Now you are much more likely to hear about the 360 or Wii than you are the PS3.

Finally, why do you bring up Sony's other systems? They have nothing to do with the fact that the PS3 has performed far worse for Sony than anyone could have predicted. It makes about as much sense as bringing up the success of Windows to justify 360 getting stomped by the Wii.

myke2010

You wanna talk about marketshare, profitability, and brand recognition... but don't understand what Sony's other systems have to do with those factors?

 No.

the PS3 has been selling around 20,000 more PS3s in Japan than the 360 each week, or less than 100,000 a month. The current monthly gap in Japan doesn't quite cover the recent monthly gaps in NA.

Get your facts straight before you talk. PS3 doesn't sell more than the Xbox360 by 500,000-600,000 consoles. Hell, it barely sells more than 100,000 consoles and that is stretching it.

In my eduacated realm of opinions which is a fact in this reality, the PS3 (the successor to the highest-selling console of all-time) barely-BARELY- reaching 40 million units sold, being the hardest console to develop for, supposedly being the superior console despite having absolutely nothing to show for it out side of two (TWO!) games, copying the Wii, nearly always getting inferior multiplats, being unable to outsell the 360 even though the Wii was able to, and all sorts of random failures here and there... that's already many, many losses for the PS3.

The Wii launched at $250 with standard motion controls, while the 360 was $200 less on launch day. It's pretty easy to see why they've been outselling the PS3...

I assumed you meant the power of the actual brand. I guess if you mean pure recognition, sure people are aware of it, but then that was there with the original XBOX too.

Yet another thread about sales figures.....sigh

The funny thing is this is from the very same article:

Divnich went on to note that Microsoft may retain its lead in North America, at least, indefinitely.

"North America is a tougher challenge, and as we have seen lately, Microsoft's lead is widening," he continued. "I don't know if the PS3 will ever overtake the Xbox 360 in North America. Maybe 2014? 2016? We do know the PS3 has incredible long-term value as a Blu-ray player, much like the PlayStation 2 did as a DVD player. But with strong competition coming from the digital front, one has to wonder if the PS3 will receive long retail legs like its predecessor did."article

So, the PS3 may catch the 360 in worldwide sales, but will probably never overtake the 360 in North America (if anything the 360's lead is "widening").

Woohoo....I guess....

As a 360 owner, what do I win if the 360 stays ahead in sales figures?

"Nothing", you say?

Well then, what do I lose if the PS3 overtakes the 360?

"Nothing", again?

Hmmm....it's almost like sales figures are kinda meaningless....but with all the threads in System Wars discussing sales figures that can't be, can it?

PS3 fanboys have been saying this for ages!

Since Kinect is going to get all the Wii owners to buy a 360 I'll say that is a pipe-dream for Sony now. Enjoy being in Third place in North America PS3 fanboys. :D

Quite a few people. Microsoft's strategy for this gen worked. the 360 and XBL is a success in the 2 largest markets globally and by the time Sony catches up they will be prepping for the next gen.Sony certainly isn't getting the last laugh by taking 7 years to get SECOND PLACE.

what strategy would that be? I fail to see what strategy microsoft has done to be in the position its in. I chuck that up to the 600 USD at launch. That was Microsoft's launch pad, so to speak. When you consider that the ps3 still cost almost twice as much as the 360 cost in EU you will and the 360 sitill takes beating over there you will see that the PS brand is still very strong. Pricing was what killed the ps3. Not anything Microsoft did.

Definitely an option. I don't think MS will be pulling out a price drop until they see what Kinect does for their momentum. If it doesn't change things much/enough, you gotta figure MS is more prepared for a price war than Sony. We definitely haven't seen all the factors that'll go into the future of these two platforms, just like many obviously didn't see the change in momentum of the last year and a half. Both sides still have cards to play :P

Considering the doom and gloom analysts and industry heads had about the platform 2 years ago, I think Sony would be very pleased with the PS3 overtaking the 360 with a year less on the market. But I agree with you that MS went into this gen with a strong plan that accomplished their goals: Profitability and a better Marketshare than their first foray. Even If PS3 pulls ahead, those accomplishments won't go away.

Not to be rude, but the very same was said when it came to the imminent release of MGS4, GOW3, KZ2, Uncharted 1, hell even Motorstorm back in the day.

Well, now the big dawgs are talkin about the PS3 outselling the 360 with 360 still havin a 1 year head start.. i noticed someone on my facebook said yesterday PS3 finally outsold the 360, but im pretty sure that's not real, think its like 44M to 42M at this point. anyway, good read, here

ohthemanatee

how many times has that date been post poned now?

I agree. I'm pretty sure I read that the PS3 would overtake it in 2009-2010 a couple years back. I don't think the gap will ever close that much, and if it does it will be too late for it to really matter. Eventually I think PS3 will take off and sell way more than the 360 because they will get cheaper and people will buy them as Blu-ray players/media devices like they did with a PS2... but that's not going to matter because all three will have their next-gen consoles out.

Awesome. It's good to see somebody who gets it. My post was not to condemn Sony, but to remind people that it was Microsoft's plan to launch early and gain a larger marketshare for the 360 over the previous xbox. They are very close to doubling what the Xbox did in terms of sales, while Sony is doing half of what they did last time. It doesn't matter WHY, (Nintendo, too expensive, blah, blah, blah)this is the state of things now.

The implementation of the new XBL and achievements with the new console turned out to be a damn good idea .You can say what you want about MS (and many will) but for good or bad, they kind of laid the foundation for this gen with the focus on multiplayer gaming and the implementation of achievements.

and ugh. really horrible microtransactions.

That's not an argument. The 360 was first released in some regions in 2009. Does that mean it wins?

Well, now the big dawgs are talkin about the PS3 outselling the 360 with 360 still havin a 1 year head start.. i noticed someone on my facebook said yesterday PS3 finally outsold the 360, but im pretty sure that's not real, think its like 44M to 42M at this point. anyway, good read, here

Kane04

how many times has that date been post poned now?

IMO for a console that is often said to be more powerful, its easier to develop for, has "more" games, has 1 year head start on the market and the company responsible for it spends untold truck loads of crash piling money so it can climb it to the top (ads, exclusive dlcs...) a system like that being almost topped by the PS3 in sales and overtaken is in reach... thats a loss already for the 360 in my book.

r u serious xbox 360 is already a success compared to xbox 1. ps3 is a failer compared to psx and ps2

based on that rational, the ps3 is already a success compared to the xbox lol

More or less agree, but I think the PS3 will pass the 360 before this generation's end, but not by a huge amount. Sony kind of never really got going this gen and MS has utterly run out of steam for gamers like me. I do predict that Sony will come out swinging and crush the competition next gen. All those mistakes made this gen will not be repeated.

Lol indeed, how are you tying PS3 sales to Xbox sales? This is how it works:

Xbox 360 is a success compared to its predecessor(Xbox).
Nintendo Wii is a huge success compared to its predecessor(GameCube).
PS3 is a failure compare to its predecessor(PlayStation 2).

the ps3 was first released in some regions in November , 2006, and in Australia and some pal regions in march 2007.

In 2007 sega said the ps3 would outsell the 360 eventually. In 2008 analysts said the ps3 would outsell the 360 by 2:1 by 2012.
This is what I meant, In 2007 analyst or sega pedicted it, in 2008 they predicted, Maybe I should have wrote analysts IN 2007, Analysts IN 2008. Hell Popular Science the magazine predicted the ps3 would outsell the Wii and 360 by 2010 back in 2007.

My point was is I'm still waiting for this big push from the ps3 thats going to put it ontop of not only the 360 but the Wii...something analysts have been predicitng since 2007, and Cows have been prediciting since 2005.
