4.2 million Playstation 4's sold since December 28th.

3 million Xbox ones since January 5th.

To put that in perspective if the Playsation 3 (Or 360 vice versa) had a 45% lead in sales over the Xbox 360, that would put it at 112 million consoles compared to 80 million.

When the Playstation 4 launches in Japan expect the gap to widen further, considering japan is what allowed PS3 to tie in sales with the Xbox 360.

Sony is shaping up to possibly reach Wii sale numbers.

This is going to be one hell of a gen.

You have the X1's sales wrong. The X1 has sold 3 million & PS4 is at 4.2 million.

Meant to say 3 million, regardless the percentages are the same. Thank you though

This gap will widen once Sony meets demand. The impending launch in Japan next month will further extend it's lead.

Sure the PS4 is available in more markets, but let me remind you it took just two markets for PS4 to sell a million, while Xflop needed 13.

Once Sony catches up with demand(most likely after the Japan launch) there is no looking back. I predict 6-6.5 million PS4s by the end of Sony's fiscal year in March.

4.2 million divided by 3 million = 1.4.

PlayStation 4 is sold 1.4x what the Xbox One sold. That translates to 40% more.

but-but more country's available at launch

but 100 dollars cheaper

but launched 1 week in North America earlier

Somehow those excuses weren't valid for the PS3 that launched 1 year later, twice the price, and was available in only less than 13 country's at launch.

Hypocrisy at it's finest.

You should be a politician with that statistical slant. If person A sells 3, and person B sells 4; You can say "OMG! Person B sold 33% more than Person A!!!". But, in reality, Person B sold... one more.

in reality person b sold one more

in reality person b sold 33% more

both statements are true.

often i compare graphics cards with one another in order to find the best solution for a customer's budget. percentages are very important. the percentage increase of one card's performance or budget relative to another card is a completely viable way to look at such a problem.

its just the start of the gen anyways. im interested in the results around Q4 2014.

Considering the massive shit MS took all over itself repeatedly all year its pretty impressive that the gap between the consoles is pretty small.

@super600: When it drops to a cool 300 2.5 years from now (According to some source can't post link to lazy and on mobile phone) I'd imagine sales would be rapid and rival that of electronics such as an IPad, given how "mainstream" Video Games have gotten.

This is disappointing for Sony. At $100 cheaper and launching in more countries and a week earlier I would have expected at least 5 to 6 million.

I suggest you keep on dreaming dude because that won't happen because of the market we are currently in and the market the ps4 and xbox one currently appeal to.

Not really considering the PS3 was a giant step down from the awesome PS2 and was a bad console for the entire gen other than a handful of games.

TC your math does not make sense. %'s change as the number grows. The current percentage the PS4 is ahead is relatively small. If they both had over 20 million you would have a point.

Anyway this is a close race.

Wow, for shame system wars, go play some games cause 4.2 milion -3 million isn't a big deal or big ownage over anything. MS released a console to 13 areas all at once on the 22nd of November, and have managed to get up to 3 million in those areas in less than 2 months time, meeting demand, costing more, and being hampered by a horrible E3(so they say). And I'd say MS is doing it right, Sony had a NA release on the 15th of November shot there load there sold a million, stock piled there console released it in EU on the 29th of November shot there load there sold another million. Right there is basically half their sales in 2 days. They don't meet demand, people can't find them any where why cause Sony is stock piling there console for the Japan release so they can shoot their load there and sell another million. So then what, 2 million of your sales come at 24-48 hour periods, the rest of the almost 2months you sold another 2 million. They need to meet demand or people will get what's available for now then buy a PS4 down the road.

Even though the PS3 was a shit console for half of last gen and launched a year later do you find it impressive it tied in sales with the admittedly better, much cheaper console the Xbox 360?

I'm not exactly following how you find what the One did impressive but not the PS3 given it was in a more dire situation at the time.

What will fuel the rapid sales besides the decreased price?Hardcore gamers will mostly be buying the console.Once enough people buy the console the console will stop selling. This may happen earlier than last gen for either of the current gen consoles.Price drops don't always work if it does not really benefit the console, but I do not know how much the PS4 has to sell for this to happen

Yes but you posted that if Ps3 had X then it would be X ahead of the 360 instead of X behind when that is not comparable because the numbers are larger in the PS3 and 360s case making what you said irrelevant.

i'm glad the ps4 is doing well, one of the major reasons sony fanboys are such suck is how losing a gen made them all completely lose their shyt.

maybe if the ps4 does well enough this gen the fanboys can relearn how to be decent human beings.

Price drop will spark sales, bundles will, exclusive games will too.

More like 29%. Who talk you math? XBox One numbers is for 2013 only. 3 million sold in 2013. We don't know how many sold in January yet. When the Xbox One launches in the other 29 countries, expect the gap to start closing. In any case, it's great both systems are selling well, I'm going to be loving all these XB1 and PS4 exclusives.

it was released in more places, at least double the amount of places compared to the xbox, don't see how it wouldn't be ahead :/

PS4 has been released in 42 countries. Xbox One has been released in 13 countries.

40% difference and the gap will only be getting bigger. People are kidding themselves if they think MS releasing the bone in the other countries will make any difference at all. Releasing the PS4 in Japan will have a bigger impact than releasing the xbone in all those countries combined. Only places the xbone even competes with the PS4 are in NA and the UK.

The PS4 is an absolute monster. Sony still has to fix their supply issues, and along with bundles, price cuts, and actually releasing quality games (which we all know are coming). There will be no stopping the PS4.

Welcome back to the throne Sony.

@blackace: You are a sad pathetic man who tries to rationalize everything in favor of your corporate god. Apologists like you are the type of fools that make CEO's smile on the way to the bank.

We don't know Xbox One January sales?

We don't know PS4 sales either since that 4.2 million figure was clocked in on the 28th of December.

Speaking of country's, what other markets will the Xbox One release in that will even make a dent in the current gap between the The PS4 and it right now? Paraguay? Ethiopia? The only markets that will remotely even help the Xbox One are the markets that they are released in now.

The gap will widen when Japan becomes a factor in the console race.

Please explain bruh.

You realize as time moves on even if PS4 maintains a lead on the X1 the % margin will only become smaller... it's like saying oh 3 Ps4 sold and 1 X1 sold atm! wooooo PS4 has a 300% lead on X1 sales wooooooo

it's silly :/

@Joedgabe: They're outselling the One by > 35% in general, and the remaining territories aren't territories the Xbox brand has ever been stronger than the Sony brand in. Sony has always outsold Microsoft in Asia and European countries. Only in the UK were sales even last gen and mostly because of the astronomical launch price of the PS3.

And Sony hasn't even made the PS4 available in Japan yet. You're quite delusional if you think the gap is going to shrink. MS needs to worry about the growing stock surplus in the US.

I have 20 Target stores in 30 miles of where I live and *all* of them have One's in stock. As has been true for the last couple of weeks. PS4's are sold as fast as they can get them, though.

One is doing fine by any measure, but they're in a race with Usain Bolt, it would appear. Even if you're fast, Usain will make you look bad. They still need to worry and find ways to aggressively cut costs to get the price of the One down.
