I'm work with accounting systems (General Ledger, Investment Accounting, Fixed Assets, Payable and Receivable, Cash Disbursements, etc) for a living and you're doing it wrong. I asked three different CPAs and they all came to the same 40% difference. If you buy a stock today (this is the same concept) for $10 and you sell the stock tomorrow for $14, you've booked a 40% gain; (14 - 10) / 10 = 40%, not a 28.5% gain, (14 - 10) / 14.
Here's a handy calculator for you to calculate sales differences: http://retail.about.com/library/bl_percent_increase.htm
Gee, who do you think is right; a dozen posters on these threads and three Certified Public Accountants or you and Blackace? Hmmm...
We're not talking about stocks. We're not talking about gains. My math is perfectly correct.
Also, I used your sales calculator and it came out 29%. lol!!
Previous Sales Amount? 4200000
Current Sales Amount? 3000000
Percentage Increase/Decrease = -29%
Even your calculator says I'm right. You need to be fire if you work for Accounting Systems and can't do %'s.
Uh read my post ( i believe its the first post on this page), the correct answer is 40 percent LOL
EDIT:
I thought I would provide the post: (my math is 100 percent correct)
Actually I think the 41 percent is more accurate than 28 percent......
Here is my explanation (hopefully this makes sense to you):
MS sold 3 million units right? And half of 3 million is 1.5 million which would be 50 percent if Sony has sold 1.5 million more units (but they didn't they sold 1.2 million more) . This part everyone can agree with im sure (pretty simple).
So 1.5 million= 50 percent, Lets divide 1.5 million by 4. 1.5m/ 4= 375000. And since 375000 is a quarter of 1.5 million lets divide 50 percent into quarters which is 12.5 percent, so 375000= 12.5 percent
So lets look at this further and add 375000+375000+375000=1125000. Now remember each 375000 accounts for 12.5 percent (12.5 percent x 3= 37.5 percent)
Or you could divide 375000 into 1.5 million which equals 3.2 (remember each 375000 equals 12.5 percent which there are 3 of and 0.2 remaining)
3 x 12.5= 37.5 percent
0.2 x 12.5 = 2.5 percent
37.5 +2.5= 40 percent
So there is your answer Sony has sold 40 percent more units than MS (thread creator was only off by 1). I think someone owes TC an apology lol (Isn't math fun?)
