Real Price Comparison
Best options for full utilisation of the systems.
Considering 10 year support... Both companies have revealed they have a 10 year life cycle.
$ based on UK prices for mental comparison.

Xbox 360:£584.98 ($956)(£284.98 ($465)without XBLGold)
PS3: £332.97 ($541)

Even without including XBL gold its a £47.99 ($78 ) difference... Thats it.
I dont see why you would not include XBL fees...

Take what you want from it. Consider all the features of both systems and pick the right one for you.
At the end of the day, stop using pricing as a trump card.

*EDIT*
Taken out the HDD expansion for both consoles.

*EDIT*
Because people dont want to read my further posts before they reply...

Its not about self owning or having a go at who ever owns what system.
I was just trying to show that for the majority of gamers that requires the most fetures out of their console the price is pretty close.
And theres no doubt with the price of XBL Gold your costs goes up.

And at the end of the day it boils down to what system offers the end user the best for their needs.
Majority of console gamers need the added fetures i posted in the 1st post.

Why I'm getting a PS3 :P More bargain for the money. Cheaper in the UK, too.

Sony needs to hire you for their marketing if they are going to move more units. Right now, even at around 23 Million, they are in last place!

i don't think people do use pricing as a trump card. the simple fact is for someone who just wants a system to play games the 360 can be pick up for £99, the ps3 no matter what type of gamer you are will cost £279-299.

i own both and i have all the accesories minus the harddrive for both, and i bought the 360 at launch for £279? i think it came out at, so the 360 is more expensive for me, but not everybody has the same gaming needs as me.

You don't need an elite to play games.

You don't need a wireless adapter unless you're too lazy to use wires.

You definitely don't need a 500GB harddrive why the hell is that on there...

Its on there because the 360 has a 120 and the PS3 a 80.
Theres a total price at the bottom of the post without the expansion.

I see your point on not all gamers are the same.
ButI belive the majority of gamers interested in an Xbox or PS3 would want the most out of it.

I read the whole post and I still don't get why it's there. For "full utilization" you don't ever need more than 20GB tops. The majority of gamers want to play games, not sit around trying to max out their consoles all day with useless things. You'll never need 10 years of Live either because even if the console is supported for 10 years doesn't mean Sony and MS won't announce their next gen consoles in a few years and then no one will care. Personally I've only paid for a couple years of Live and I don't see myself paying for more than a couple more.

The HDD is the same price on both consoles mate.
So lets take it out of the equation... And say the Elite has more storage that the 80gig PS3 and put it down to features.

You say you paid for 2 years XBL Gold... $100. Couple more? $200.

If you buy a year of LIVE, you get a month free. Add that to the free month of LIVE you get from the beginning, plus the free trials that come with many big games, and you should subtract at least $50 from the total.

I bought my X360 in Dec05. I bought my PS3 in Feb07.

Even with XBL added in, I've still paid more for my PS3 :)

Wrong, my PS3 is sitting a whole floor above my router and modem and its not in my best interest to tunnel through the celling, through installation, through insulation and then through the bottom of my floor just to have my PS3 wired to my router. Also given that at almost 30+ ft. of wiring the chances for signal disruption grow tremendously ....

Good thread.
Sony should just start selling PS3s without HDDs. Hey, it would be ripping off, but casuals might not notice...

I see the "Let's add accessories to the price of the Xbox 360 to make it seem more expensive than the PS3" argument is never going to die...

Bottom line.

Xbox 360 $299 + $40 for a year of XBL Gold (Amazon and big box stores commonly discount the price) = $339

PS3 $399

There's no getting around this folks. I even threw in a year of XBL Gold, even though I didn't have to.

Yeah and none of the consoles need it. Over those years the Live price is still nothing compared to the costs buying games anyway. Also you're still not getting it, Xbox doesn't need 120 GB, PS3 doesn't need 80 GB, they are not computers. You don't keep hundreds of GB of data on it to keep a bunch of game saves. It's a pretty huge generalization, but people wouldn't keep more than a couple movies and several music albums on there, anyway. So what is it that requires all of this memory? Even then everything else can be streamed off your computer for 360 and I'm pretty sure you can do that with PS3 as well.

who the hell would use wireless over wired? x__X" You notice that the Wireless Adapter is the only thing that makes the price of 360 so high. Now do the math and you are better of with a 360. (pricewise) Most people don't even buy those things you listed. Anyone who sais PS3 is cheaper than 360 must be stupid.

But according to the cows here, the 360 has no games, so we won't have to add any money for software purchases. Add $200 a year for games for the PS3, and what do you know? See, I can add random things too.

Yeah but for 360, no one forces you to buy 10 years of XBL or a wireless adapter. It gives the person much choice and freedom. And yeah if you're gonna buy everything for 360 that's included for PS3 you'll save money with the PS3, but i appreciate having the choice and the lower price. It's like sony charges you for stuff you don't need or wont.

Heck, I'd say you were being nice as I pay $30/yr for XBL....and have since '05. About twice a year Amazon and Costco have specials on XBL cards for $30/yr and I always get me at least one card, if not two.

Huh? Do you realize most of the games are geared towards online play? Forza 3's second disk requires a hdd to play? Yeah, that REALLY sounds like freedom of choice; More like deception of choice.

I'm still wondering why you would need 500GB on a console.

Jeez, my computer only has 250GB drive and it can run Crysis on high.

I have allot of games and most of them on the PS3 copies data to the drive. I've used just over 100 gig on games including PSN titles already.
I don't own a 360, I thought the 360 copies game data as well?

The price of the HDDvs GB sizewasnt that much apart so I went for the larger one.

You can copy games to the 360 to save loading time, but that's completely at your choice (not mandatory), and you can easily scrub them once you're done.

Oh I know. I've done it myself numerous times for numerous games (Forza 2, Gears of War 2, Mass Effect, etc.) but since those are purely optional, I didn't feel they were worth mentioning.

Funny. Virtually all RPGs are single-player, GTA has a notable single-player campaign (and so do Dead Space, Orange Box, and so on), and most sports games are designed for offline multiplayer as well as online. If you gravitate towards single-player or offline multiplayer, Live Gold is not a necessity.

No the real price comparison is $199 for a Xbox 360 and $399 for a PS3

Adding up the extras is just retarded, people buy extras for everything. Its the impact of the initial purchase not what you put into it, cause if it were different everyone would be driving around Ferrari's instead of Honda Civics that have enough money put into them to equal the price of the Ferrari.

Fact: I can play COD:WAW on a Xbox 360 for $259, if I wanted to do the same on PS3 $459

You don't need a HDD, Wifi adapter, extra controller, headset, LIVE subscription(first month is free so you can decide if you even want to pay for it), or a camera.

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't buy a 360 without a hard drive, so that's why I included the $299 Pro system in the first place. But, for Arcade users, ebay and Amazon are excellent places to shop for deals on hard drives. I've seen 120GB HDDs advertised between $60 and $80 on ebay.

Umm you can try, and spin it however you want, but when i walk out of a store with either a ps3 or 360 im either spending 200.00 or 400 not 860.44 or whatever the "total" price was. I can spin too lmao 360 costs twice as much as ps3, and still outsells it.

You don't need an elite to play games.

You don't need a wireless adapter unless you're too lazy to use wires.

You definitely don't need a 500GB harddrive why the hell is that on there...

ColdfireTrilogy

Wrong, my PS3 is sitting a whole floor above my router and modem and its not in my best interest to tunnel through the celling, through installation, through insulation and then through the bottom of my floor just to have my PS3 wired to my router. Also given that at almost 30+ ft. of wiring the chances for signal disruption grow tremendously ....

Then a HomePlug system. Faster and more secure, and you still don't need to run long wires. PS. 30ft of Ethernet is nothing. You can go up to 300 feet.

[QUOTE="kratos-7"]Yeah but for 360, no one forces you to buy 10 years of XBL or a wireless adapter. It gives the person much choice and freedom. And yeah if you're gonna buy everything for 360 that's included for PS3 you'll save money with the PS3, but i appreciate having the choice and the lower price. It's like sony charges you for stuff you don't need or wont.HuusAsking

Huh? Do you realize most of the games are geared towards online play? Forza 3's second disk requires a hdd to play? Yeah, that REALLY sounds like freedom of choice; More like deception of choice.

Well, I'm glad you are happy to not play online.

300'? Hmmm. I could just use my neighbors internet and not pay at all! Genius! :P

The_Game21x
well theres no way getting around that U HAVE to add some sort of XBL fee since the 360 focuses around the online compartment and that is MS' Forte. Other wise I agree with you, Ps3 is more expensive then the 360 but it's always down to preference. Mine would be PS3 for example and i am sure urs is 360 rite? See now if everyone had lots and lots of money i am sure we d have less fanboys running around since they would have all consoles and a gaming PC and we could all live peace fully together, too bad its not the case tho

Actually, here is the real price comparison:

80 gb PS3 with built in wireless, bluetooth, and blu-raydirect from sony using their sony rewards program - $270 new with taxes

Dualshock 3 controller from newegg.com with free shipping - $42.99 new

Free Online for the life of the console - $0

Motorolla H710 Bluetooth Headset from Amazon.com (this is what I have) - 36.51 new

Total for all this awesomeness at the same prices I purchased all of it - $349.50

Sony needs to hire you for their marketing if they are going to move more units. Right now, even at around 23 Million, they are in last place!

SolidTy
They need to hire me. I make fun of Sony's marketing all the time on these boards and I've made a countless posts about how they could EASILY market their product. I still have no idea what Sony is doing here... Someone suggested that they didn't have the money for big marketing, so it may have been spent on something else...

In the long run I think everyone will see the benefits of blu-ray gaming...

Yeah because everyone lives in a mansion with their computers and consoles in opposite ends of the compound, or on a football stadium.

No, you don't have to add some sort of Xbox Live fee. While I personally am interested in playing games online, not everyone who buys a 360 shares my interests, as evidenced by the fact that MS confirmed that there are 20 million XBL users (including silver accounts) and not close to the 30 million the Xbox 360 has shipped.

And yes, you're right. I own all three current gen consoles and I prefer the 360.

I just bought a 360 as well... 60gb Premium model from dell.com- $255 (headset included) Wired Controller from amazon- $29 (wired so I can use it for PC also) 3rd party wireless adapter - $40 Total: About $324. Have not paid for live though.. Would rather chalk that up to the price of games rather than the price of the console

I'm thinking most things will go to digital distribution before Blu-Ray gains serious momentum.
