Detailed Gamplay

Weapon Details, Cover System, Realism.

Persistent Stats Tracking and Player Progression: Persistence constantly gives the gamer something to strive for and keeps them playing. Grow in rank, earn medals, improve your abilities, and become a Hero – all visible to the complete online gaming community and embedded within the game.

Heroes: Obtain the ultimate goal and become a Hero online. Players with hero status inspire troops around them and cause fear in their enemies. Heroes have access to the best and rarest weapons and equipment, and will stand out visually from the rest of the soldiers.

Stalingrad Campaign: The Stalingrad campaign will feature the multiplayer maps used in a campaign layout recreating the battle for Stalingrad from both the German and Russian sides. This will be enhanced with story elements through the form of mission introductions and in-game cinematic sequences that begin and end the campaign.

Unique Focus – the Battle of Stalingrad in depth: takes the familiar WWII genre into a unique direction. Far removed from the well-trodden Normandy setting, gameplay is based on fresh scenarios and actions the player has never experienced before. Follow the German army as they assault the city of Stalingrad, to the banks of the Volga. Follow the Soviet army as it holds the city against all the odds then destroys the Axis forces.

First person cover system: Experience the ultimate firefights that a cover system allows, from the immersion of a first person view. Peek or blind fire over and around cover and more.

Squad Command: Command fire teams on the battlefield using an easy to use first person interface. Suppress the enemy, send a fire team to flank them and hit them where it hurts!

WWII weaponry redefined: true to life ballistics, bullet penetration, breathing, adjustable sights, free aim, weapon bracing, photo-real graphics and more, create WWII weaponry that has no equal.

Co-op: Players can connect with their friends and battle AI in multiple game types including the Stalingrad Campaign, Skirmish Mode, and more.

Offline Challenges – Online Achievements: Offline challenges such as the shooting range and assault courses let the player learn and hone their skills to perfection with all of the weapons and features in the game. Training with different challenges to achieve awards, win competitions and improve their skills the player can pit their best times/scores against the rest of the online gaming community.

Morale: Experience what it is like to be a soldier in one of the bloodiest conflicts in history and the importance of a soldier's state of mind and how it can turn the tide of battle.

Exciting Offline Play: Offline play against AI featuring the Stalingrad Campaign, Skirmish mode, and more give the player an exciting and fun environment to learn the game before hopping online. Play any level or Campaign offline against AI to gain achievements and train for the online arena.

Competitions & Leader-boards: Compete to obtain unique awards and achievements with players all over the world. The competitions range from shooting range challenges to unique and fun assault courses.

Graphics

Enhanced Unreal® Engine™ 3: Built on an enhanced version of Unreal Engine 3 the game features cutting edge visuals and features

Sound

The game will feature a dynamic music system that adapts the mood of the soundtrack to match the flow of the battle. To highlight the differences between the two warring powers the game will feature a completely unique soundtrack for the Russian and German sides.President of Tripwire Interactive, John Gibson, said the soundtrack perfectly fits the dramatic and brutal nature of the game. "For Heroes of Stalingrad our goal was to create a soundtrack that was fresh and different than the standard bombastic music usually heard in this genre. We were blown away at how well he was able to nail the feeling of desperation and defiance that the soldiers in this battle would have felt."

Gameplay Features

  • First Person Cover System: Players can take cover behind objects in first person and easily peek or blind fire over and around cover and more.
  • Squad Command:Players can command fire teams on the battlefield with an easy to use first person interface.
  • Damage System: A detailed hit detection system. Specific bodyparts hit are more lethal than others. Instant Death, Lethal, Critical and Non-Critical. (Source: PC Gamer Article July '09)
  • Mantling System: Players can negotiate low obstacles, such as climbing over fences, through windows, etc. (Source: PC Gamer Article July '09)
  • Adjustable Sights: Iron sights as well as scopes on weapons are adjustable for longer and shorter ranges. (Source: PC Gamer Article July '09)
  • Bandaging: Players can bandage minor wounds to stop themselves from bleeding to death. Non-critical hits will cause half the damage instantly, with the other half occurring over bleed out time. Prompt bandaging can stop the second half of the damage from occurring. Source: PC Gamer Article July '09)
  • Interactive Weapon Collision: Weapons collide with the game world; the player will raise and lower his weapon accordingly.(Source:IGN Preview)
  • Bullet Penetration: Bullets can penetrate some materials and cause damage on the other side. (Source:IGN Preview)
  • Breathing System: The player's breathing pattern will affect his aim; players can hold their breath momentarily for a more stable shot. Players who have low stamina from sprinting, etc. will breathe harder. (Source:IGN Preview)
  • Bipods: Bipod mounted weapons will pivot around their bipods when deployed. Deploying bipod mounted weapons is much easier than it was in Ostfront. (Source:IGN Preview)
  • Tactical View: HUD elements appear as the player needs them, and are automatically hidden when the player does not. The entire HUD can be brought up at any time with the press of a key. (Source:IGN Preview)
  • Weight System: The player can carry multiple weapons as well as grenades, but has a maximum allowed weight and will slow down as they carry more. (Source: Ramm-Jaeger on IRC)
  • Peripheral Vision Indicators: Small indicators appear at the edge of the player's screen to denote possible enemies in the player's peripheral vision. (Source: Ramm-Jaeger)
  • Character Progression: Players can gain experience and rank. Higher ranked players have access to rare weapons, equipment and ****s. Higher ranked players are visually distinct from lower ranked players. If you do poorly, for example tk a lot you can rank down. (Source:Voodoo Extreme Interview and BashandSlash Interview)
  • Dynamic Music System: Heroes of Stalingrad features a dynamic music system that adapts the emotional mood of the soundtrack to match the morale of the player based on the flow of the battle. To highlight the differences between the two warring powers the game features a completely unique soundtrack for the Russian and German sides. (Source: Wilsonam)
  • New Recoil Model: The recoil model is more realistic than that of Ostfront. SMG's have had their recoil lowered and MG's have more recoil. (Source: E3 Interview)
  • Interruptible Reloads:Reloads can now be interrupted. (Source: E3 Interview)
  • Fire Support: There are 3 types of fire support: mortars, artillery, and rockets. Mortars cause a small amount of damage in a small area, rockets cause a large amount of damage over a large area. Artillery falls in between. (Source: GDN Gamescom Article)
  • Aerial Recon: The commander can call a recon plane which surveys the battlefield and reports enemy positions. Enemy infantry and tanks will show up on the commander's map instantly (as long as he is near the radio), and will filter down the ranks with a few seconds delay. The plane will only report units it has actual visual contact with; it will be possible to hide from it and shoot it down. (Source: GDN Gamescom Article) (Source: Wilsonam)
  • Ironsights for the Sniper:Sniper rifles now have usable ironsights, as they did in real life. (Source: GDN Gamescom Article)
  • Destructable Buildings: Any and all buildings are destructible if the mapper wants. Buildings will still leave ruins behind, however, so the battlefield isn't bombed flat. (Source: GDN Gamescom Article)
  • SDK: The game ships with SDK and a Mapping Tool out of the box. (Source: BashandSlash Interview)
  • Realism Settings: Relaxed realism will include all of the new interface helpers. Realistic will be for the more hardcore players, and will have some of the new interface helpers disabled. Server admins will be able to set up a custom configuration that picks and chooses which features to have.

I hope the gameis a success they put so much work into that no other game does like 3D scopes, mounting guns on to solid surfaces, etc. I'd love to see Killing floor 2.

If an FPS doesn't have the name Call of Duty in it, it won't score a 9.0

I'd love to say AAA because this game looks incredible, but that's not going to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if GS rates it 7.5. Doesn't matter though, I'll still buy it day it comes out.

This, along with EYE: Divine Cybermancy are the only shooters I am looking forward to. I am sure I will enjoy it, but I dont know how well it will score, what I can almost guarantee is that at least one CoD fanboy will rate the game and score it poorly.

On GS I say 8.0

I'm more worried a CoD fanboy reviews it. What I will hate though is I KNOW GS will give it a 8.5, yet in a few months will give MW3 a 9.5.

Just stop with the COD hate. The reviewers know the difference between this game and a COD game. Anyways, you can't really comapre them. I think the game will score an A becasue of the lack of single player.

I think it also has just tons of options and vareity of gameplay. not just depth. Hopefully that + the depth + the lower price = 9.0.

Already have this reserved. Definitely one of the better looking shooters out there. I'm guessing 8.0-8.5.

REALLY? Do I need to link you the G4 X-play review for RO1? And it will score higher than a 7.0 as RO will give BF3 and MW3 a run for their money in MP. And there is a single layer aspect too.

Adam Sessler and his co-host reviewed the first Red Orchestra and gave it a poor score, citing one of its weaknesses that it takes "minutes to reload a gun". They thought the game was a joke and were laughing during the video review.

RO2 isn't shortchanging anyone. If somebody complains about lack of single player, I'll have to ask wtf they were expecting. RO has always been a multiplayer game. If the features TWI promises work as they should, the game will be miles and away better than MW3 and on-par, if not better, than BF3.

I think Consolespot - i mean Gamespot will wait for every other site to review it first so that they can give a similar score like they do with every other PC game they review.

Gamespot gave the first game a 7.9, understanding the authenticity and team work required for the game. So they will review it accuarately. We are doing a hype thread for gamespot, not x-play. The game dosen't really have a single player. You can call it a single player but is essentially multiplayer with bots and some cut scenes.

Overrated. The campaign outside of a the first american mission and a small amount of british missions was boring beyond reason. The BIA game was very bland and that MoH game was terrible.

CoD:W@W was excellent, and I am secure enough with my status as a poster to say that other than Freelancer, it's probably my most played game ever.

Edit: It's also arguably the last great PC Call of Duty.

AA here I guess, from the looks of things. However considering it's a Tripwire game it will evolve after release just like Killing Floor did - and look at how the game is compared to its release build.

You could say that for just about any single player game. That doesn't change that RO2 has a full campaign, even taking the view point of the germans.

i loved killing floor

but i am so god damn sick of WW2

Maroxad

We haven't had a solid WWII game this generation.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt Company of Heroes released this gen?

Men of War! Ruse! Good strat games, FPS wise? I'm doubtful. Even COD2 was underwhelming for myself.

THAT, I agree on. FPS side WWII has been disappointing. I was underwhelmed by COD2 as well :(

Probably but I don't make purchases by GS scores so I'm getting this no matter what it scores.

if i made purchases solely based off reviews i'd miss out on alot of awesome games this gen.

My guess is AA because RO isn't popular with reviewers but what do they know, right? Best realism shooter ever, ARMA II is boring.

BigDaddyPOLO

How dare you write something negative about Arma II! ;)

I voted A simply because I don't want this to be overrated and potentially flop.
