[QUOTE="nintendoboy16"]Um, Sony still supported the PS1 for a while during PS2 era and the PS2 sales didn't get "canabalized". The reason PS3 did so bad was launching it at (the number of nightmares) $599. I fail to see how still supporting the Wii would canabalize Wii U's sales.

Then again, it is Nintendo. One of the most frowned upon companies since 1996.

nintendoboy16

I think the problem is.... Nintendo isn't even supporting the Wii now. How can anyone say that they can evensupport both consoles?

Not supporting the Wii eh? I guess that must be true considering they won't... ...OH WAIT! Wasn't this one of the games the fanbase was completely whining about due to previous plans of NOT localizing to the states?

Eh? We may have a very different definition because 1-2 greatgames isn't what I'd call "adequate" support:?

The true test comes when Wii U launches. Lets see what's the remaining lineup for the Wii by then. You'd be scrapping at the bottom of the barrel I bet.

No one said anything about continual support on the software front. More so, it's about seeing how much milage Nintendo can get out of the Wii. Once the demand is ata level where it's not profitable to leave it on store shelves, Nintendo will hault production. I'm sure a lot of people don't heavily invest in gaming who are willing to spend $150 or so on a console with an already solid library of titles.

The little else Nintendo releases throughout the year will be enough to add onto the existing library, like Xenoblade.

You could say that for every last gen product though? :?

"As an example, if I'm the head of a household of a family of four, and my disposable income is $50,000 to $60,000, I'm going to continue to look at the Wii because of the software, and it's a great entertainment device. For consumers who want to have the latest gadgets and have a higher disposable income, that's for the Wii U."

 He did not just say that! That makes it sound like the WiiU will cost a fortune... which means that it is doomed.

Which was my thought exactly... the average head of household in the USA (if you are lucky and have a job) is 30-40k a year... if you have kids chances are your spouse doesn't work or works part time because day care costs 100 per child per week, and then you have mortgage, car, food, gas, etc.... and you are left with very little. To have 50-60k disposable income you would need to make 100k+ a year and then you would be in the 1% ...hehe, had to. He makes it sound like the wii-u will cost a fortune. He is sounding so much like Sony pre-ps3 launch. Ken Kutaragi...to be precise..than they gave him the axe..

Like I said it depends on the demand and whether or not the consumer continues to support the product. The Wii brand itself is pretty strong and it's sitting at an affordable price now. The Wii brand has been everywhere and I wouldn't be surprised if it got a lot of milage just because of the inexpensive price and the catelogue of titles it has now.

People were stillactively buying the PS2 not too long ago, even after Sony decided to basically let it live on it's own with it's existing software.

It still wouldn't be that expensive if the 3DS taught them anything.AtariKidX

We're talking about Nintendo, not Sony. Nintendo generally does learn from their mistakes (most of the time), Sony doesn't.Nintendo doesn't mess around when it comes to things like pricing, they don't want to repeat the same mistakes and they have no other industries to fall back on.

I think the main question is...how much does the tablet-like controller cost.

IF we assume that the Wii U is a souped up PS3 (with 160gb), then that's already a $250 unit.

IF we assume that the controller costs half ofsomething like a HP Touchpad, then that's about $125.

I'm thinking the full package would have a maximum ceiling price of $350.

The controller will not cost as much as tablets because it's just a screen. There isn't a game console inside of the controller. The Wii U is not going to be expensive. It won't even have an HDD! Reggie is comparing its price to the Wii's current price.

It still has to house enough hardware to decode/playback a wireless stream. It house a screen, speakers, buttons, camera, and it'll need a battery big enough for to power that stuff for awhile. Hopefully they don't cheap out on the battery. :P Won't cost them much, but I'd say the controller would be $60-80 so they can sell more (Which they better be planning to.)

This is smart because the WiiU is the first console to launch. That extra expense means more processing power, which is an investment in the future of the console. By the time the other consoles launch Nintendo should have the WiiU's costs of production reduced enough to undercut the competition. If they do not have respectable hardware in their system then their lower price won't matter since the other consoles will be seen as more future proof and worth the extra money.

I don't think that the extra costs of the controllers is the main cause for the cost increase. The WiiU tablet has a lot of cheap parts. I would guess that the bulk of the cost of the tablet is the cost of materials, and in most tech the cost of materials and production would not be that oppressive. There is also the cost of the wiimote and nunchuck that probably come with it as well, but these costs have been heavily streamlined at this point.

Also bear in mind that Nintendo wants the WiiU to launch as cheaply as they can afford to but also have a huge war chest of money to spend, like what we've seen from the 3DS. Nintendo views their head start as a critical advantage and will not repeat their 3DS mistake.

So when Reggie was talking aboutbeing able to playin it, it waslike a remote play similar to the Vita/PSP?

Yay! I hope it will be powerful and expensive instead of weaker and normal price/cheap.

This might be the first time in many generations that they do manage to get both 3rd party + their own support. And this time also hardware novelty.
That would be a great thing! Then what they have to try is have good online play. I mean good not half paced behind the 360/PS3 and its successors.

He said that it would be more expensive than the current price of the Wii not the 250 price point. This thing will launch for 300 bucks no doubt. However, the controllers are gonig to cost an arm and a leg. No way is a tablet controller going to cost less than 70 bucks. I also hope they keep the price of games at 50.

I'm thinking this will be at least $350 and those controllers will cost at least $70. Also think they will hike up the games to $60. I mean Resident Evil Revelations is supposedly going to be $50 and that's a handheld game.

Same. Nintendo will not win 1st place next generation, especially if the Wii U happens to be more than $300. The biggest reason why they had 1st place for this generation was because of the $250 price tag.

Yea 350 also seems very probable, and Nintendo loves to mark up their controller prices. Wii's Wiimote and nunchuck cost around 15$ dollars at launch to manufacture. They sold them for 60 freakin dollars. No doubt the tablet will cost around 100$, there is just no way in hell it won't be. I think thats why they chose to go with single/double tablet option instead of the 4 player option. That also insinuates that they will have a heavy online focus seeing as multiplayer will be limited otherwise.

Good point on RE:R, it is wishful thinking but yea most likely 60 dollar games are coming. :P

Sounds like PR bullcrap. If its just for the hardcore then they would ditch the tablet design. They also said this about the GBA and DS too (GBA was for hardcore, DS new gamers apparently).

Why is that? The tablet design is brilliant for core games (RPGs, strategy games).

[QUOTE="ActionRemix"][QUOTE="Nengo_Flow"] The Wii didnt own the PS3. Yeah it sold more, but thats becuz SONY pretty much owned them selves, the Wii really didnt anything to the PS3. Nintendo didnt attack playstation at all, unlike M$ who had one thing in mind this gen and it wasnt to be #1, but to take down Playstation

KBFloYd

You're wrong. The majority of PS2 owners were casuals and many of them flocked to the Wii.

yea fact is...both wii and microsoft used playstation as their gimp this gen..

NO, I'm pretty sure Microsoft used it's own fanbase as their gimps this gen...

Nintendo useduntapped casual/non-gamermarket as their gimp

Sony used themselves as their gimps

Two products wont co-exist. The Wii will die out fast when the WiiU releases. Nintendo said the same with the GBA when the ds came out, that didnt happen at all, the GBA died really fast and Nintendo phazed it out even though they said they would co-exist.

It could be a different story as you say, I was just going on past experiences with what Nintendo promised. The Ps2 co-existed with the Ps3, the problem with the Wii is, Nintendo dosnt seem to have a lot of support for it even now, so how will it fair after a new system is out, Nintendo will have to be bringing out a lot of game for the wii because I dont see much 3rd party support right now.

PS2 didn't have much support for it and look what Sony is throwing out still.

[QUOTE="tomarlyn"]Sounds like PR bullcrap. If its just for the hardcore then they would ditch the tablet design. They also said this about the GBA and DS too (GBA was for hardcore, DS new gamers apparently).BlbecekBobecek

Why is that? The tablet design is brilliant for core games (RPGs, strategy games).

It will be too unorthadox for many or labelled the next Jaguar controller. Remember the Wiimote was supposed to produce amazing FPS and point & click games but it never happened.

I disagree. The tablet is a ways around a lot of hurdles the current console control mechanism faces. It will be an interesting E3, thats for sure. MS and Sony will likely show their next consoles, and NIntendo will re-reveal the wii"u" if it is still called that. I'm a little worried. Part of me thinks the power of the system will be increased, and another part of me thinks it will be gimped, due to 3ds sales.

I can't see both systems coexisting, the Wii-U will be successful and the Wii will be like the PS2, sell a decent amount from time to time but eventually be forgotten.

Think about this in regards to the portables line. GBA stayed alive for awhile as the ds was gaining market share.

Unlike most other people I'm looking forward to the Wii U. Can't wait for E3 2012 when we get the finalized details.

I called this about a Year or so ago suggesting they do this when MS was launching Kinect and do think it's the way to go for Nintendo but we'll see just how core they really are going once I get mah hands n a Wii U and it's launch games. :P

Its all about the software. If the games are good, people will buy it, even if its twice the price of the Wii. If it has no good software support, it will die a horrible death. Im pretty sure Nintendo know this though, so I would expect a hefty lineup of launch titles, catering to the gamers rather than family entertainment.

I see it being more expensive than the wii's current price($150) bun not too much more expensive than the wii's launch price($250), I see the wii-u being priced anywhere between $300-350, Nintendoknows they have to be extra careful with the wii-u launch after what happened with the 3DS.

I'm expecting the Wii-U to come in around the $300 price point, which for a Nintendo system would be an expensive price.

The Wii-U will launch with a price tag of $300... QUOTE ME!!! Anything beyond that and you'll have the 3DS launch effect.. ie.
