Thanks to neogaf (neogaf link)

We are working as usual, first with a relatively small team on a next-generation project," said Hakkinen.
"One wonders all the time: Can the new consoles really be that much better than the previous? Rest assured: they are, it is a quantum leap.".

Quantum leap says nothing about their potential. But let's hope they are a big leap, that way we could go forward again rather than standing still like now

Of course it's going to be a huge leap. This has been the longest console cycle and if Sony/Microsoft expect to sell new consoles then they have to offer an incredible improvement over current gen consoles. If there isn't a noticeable improvement then what is the point of upgrading. Microsoft/Sony would not be stupid enough to release underpowered consoles that they expect to last 8 years.

A huge jump in capability would not be hard to achieve for the consoles, after all they'll have this years tech at the end of next year or maybe the year after.

So basically Developers are saying PS4 and 720 are going to exceed expectations?

All gamers should be rejoice, even PC gamers... cos developers can produce mega games that will 'up' the gen than most things out today...

How small is the Wii:U looking like and its not even out yet.

I certainly hope so. Otherwise, what's the point of buying a next-gen console?

A PC I can use for other things. Most of the other things a console can do like Netflix, a sub-$100 Blu Ray player can do.

That said, I'm looking forward to next-gen with the WiiU first in line.

I'm a PC gamer and this is true. We are a whole lot of power ahead of consoles. But it means damn all if the games we're getting don't match up to the hardware. That's the potential the system has but it's not the real world application it's getting. You still have people clinging to their really old cards too. If everyone was able to afford it and everyone had the same system then sure it would be quite amazing. Sadly we live in a console driven time

An AMD 7870 only costs $250-280 right now. By the time the PS4 is ready for manufacturing, a custom version of the 7870 chipset would cost Sony peanuts. It would probably be running at a slighly slower clock speed to reduce heat, but it would still be a dramatic improvement over the PS3's custom 7800 GT. The PS4 is not going to have a GPU similar to a 6670.

Interesting. if they are going the 10X route (roughly) then i wonder if they are going to also take the loss leader strategy again? or will they try and do it like the mobile phone business model. It seems to have been very successful for the 360. I cant see them taking a significant loss on next gen consoles...especially in this day and age. but a next gen console for 200 quid and a 2-3 year contract to live/PSN+ could be a very very tempting to people and that kind of recurring revenue would be gold dust to sony/MS. Its hard to define "quantum leap" though. is it raw horsepower and hardware features? just one of them? is "quantum leap" really only 5X rather than 10X? its still very hazy. its like the wiiu where devs comments range from 0.8X of a 360 to 6X a 360 to 2X a 360 with a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Sony is probably trying very hard to sell the console at cost, but they will probably end up selling at a small loss in the beginning.

To a manufacture like sony not even close to that it would cost remember they buy in millions, and most of the time they them self manufacture them and just pay a royalty. So a 7870 could cost sony GPU only talking like $70 or something like it.

Very true. I'm just tired of people saying that next gen consoles need to cost $1000 to show a dramatic leap over current gen. So many people don't understand that Sony/Microsoft don't pay consumer prices for their hardware.
