First, the news about the 360 version of FFXIII being sub-HD most likely due to compression..

and now this:

Capcom Wrestles With Xbox 360 Disc Restrictions

The PS3's Blu-ray format offers developers plenty of space to fill. But the Xbox 360 doesn't use Blu-ray, it uses DVD. That makes things tricky if a studio is planning to release a multi-platform title like Lost Planet 2.

In a recent interview, Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said Capcom had to cut a significant amount from the game. When asked how development was going, he replied, "There wasn't especially any big trouble. More than those kind of difficulties, the edited content was way too much and dealing with that was more difficult than anything."

"This time, truly, the content that was cut was significant," Takeuchi added, "and at the end, we had to wrestle with disc space."

Takeuchi went on to expand on how difficult it was to make those cuts, saying that it was a situation in which the team was on the verge of crying as they shaved down their game to fit on the disk — though Takeuchi is most likely being facetious. The upside to these cuts? "I think we could be able to add that content at a later date as downloadable content." Everybody wins!

The original Lost Planet was first released as an Xbox 360 exclusive and eventually ported to the PC and the PS3.

R.I.P. DVD9, you've had an amazing run and there is no doubt your wonderous technology will stay relevant just like VHS did when DVD first came out. Sadly, it looks like 2010 is the year the baton is passed over to BluRay. The Magical Compression Genie has run out of fairy dust, it seems.

The lead format of failing gamers.

DVD based games are still more widely used than bluray (I don't believe anyone uses it besides sony for the PS3) and I'm pretty sure DVD movies still outsell Bluray.

Bluray is taking an awful long time to become the media standard it wants to think it is. By the time it makes it, a new larger and better format will be out.

As much as I agree with DVD not having enough space, I believe Capcom is just trying to milk us for more money in this situation. The first Lost Planet had no such problems, so we'd need to expect a 15+ hour campaign for something like this to occur. Now they've made it public, charging us for DLC would now seem "ok" because of the lack of space provided by the 360. If the DLC were to be made free, then this would seem like a genuine effort in correcting things on Microsoft's part.

Look, I know what you're saying. You have a good point and all, but I'm still not sure what the bigger and better format would be since BluRay will go up to 200GBs. It is far more likely that the next-gen systems will all have BluRay drives in them or some derivative technology (like, I could totally see Nintendo going with that Chinese BluRay format or something along those lines).

The real point here is that BluRay is turning into an advantage for games during this generation. A lot of people said it would be completely unecessary but they are getting proven wrong time and again. Sony was clairvoyant in this regard. There's no denying that.

I believe a format is already being worked on that stores between 800 gb to 1 TB.

Bluray is nice but I don't feel it was worth it for sony. It's cost raised the PS3's cost which cost them alot of sales and took them from 1st place to 3rd in one generation all for the convenience of not having to switch a disc? I don't really see the big problem with switching a disc out, you know back in the PS1 era we sometimes had to switch between 4 discs! My God! 4! How we didn't strain our muscles and run out of breath having to swap a disc out is beyond me!

CD was a big jump from cartridges because you can't really have a two cart game (I've never seen one) but you can have a 4 CD game.

A lot of aprts of the world don't have access to broadband like we do here in the western world. It's too big a market for these console manufacturers to avoid, so Discs will be around for at least the next-gen of consoles if not longer.

Don't get me wrong, though.. My favorite disc format is STEAM LOL!

Oh, you're not even lying. I had a Sega-CD once upon a time. I don't think the holographic storage discs will ever see the light of day on a console, even if the technology becomes ubiquitous. The seek-times for those things is beyond awful. They're basically an optical alternative to tape storage in that respect. BluRay is far better suited to media and with HD adoption being retarded from the economic slowdown, there's no reason to go to post-HD entertainment quite yet (24K and such).

just sayin'

No doubt. Imagine waiting to download a 20 gig game; No thanks! Why are lemmings stating"digital download is the future" when they would be spending a crapload on the hdd's to hold all that content? :?

Digital distribution became so big on PC because the market was ready, it was introduced and despite your concerns thrived on PC.

The only reason it hasn't become as big on consoles is because the console companies haven't allowed it to.

Amen ! And i don't get why can't they ship the 360 version with two disks. Is it that much of a hassle to swap disks? I liked buying SIlent Hill 3 on 5 disks on the PC. Made the game feel epic.

I'm glad they haven't. Truth be told, if DD was the norm on consoles, I'd probably adapt, obviously (not going to quit gaming because I have no physical copy) but if I had the choice, I'd much prefer to have a physical copy. I'd rather they both be side by side and take the "Digital Copy" route movies are going in, but that'd present its own host of problems.

You misread me. I said I'd adapt. I did say I'd like a "Digital Copy" route, like what movies are doing nowadays. You have a physical AND digital copy. Definitely not all or nothing for me. :)

Part of me doesn't want to swap discs.... not that I'm lazy or that swapping a disc once through a playthrough is bad because usually you don't play through a game during 1 session of gaming anyway.... but it is kind of annoying, when you get into the game, and your blasting Super Ninja Zombie Cowboys and then "Insert Disk 2" appears on the screen.... it can take you out of the experience.

However, in someways I like it, it reminds me of yesteryear, when i was younger, and when I learned about a game I liked being more than 1 disc or sometimes 4, it made me that much more psyched for the game... because to me, it meant 1 of 2 things.....

#1 the game was going to be longer

or

#2 there would be cool cinematics

So, basically what you're saying is that Lost Planet 2 will be $40 because they expect that you will buy the DLC to actually complete the content they have already created as DLC that you will have to pay for per Live? Or, are we just jumping to silly conclusions, now? Please clarify for me. Also, way to side-step the FFXIII part of the OP as well.

he's right, theres a thread about capcom crying because they had to cut loads of content from the 360 version due to the limitations of DVD 9, they said it would come later as DLC, i understand where you are coming from, sounded unbelievable to me till i read about it on kotaku

Exactly, but remember what it was like last gen, PC gaming had to install everything and that was a bad thing. Console gamers would gloat we had to sit through an install while they just put in a disk and it loaded right up, they never considered if given the option they would actually want to install games.

Too bad the PC is still using it and is distributing games bigger than most PS3 games. Kind of odd how Blu-ray hasn't taken off on PC due to its large amount of storage space... oh wait, I know why, its because HDD's are faster at reading data than a disc drive, have way more storage space and are cheaper. Go figure.

Really...? I HIGHLY doubt that next gen. games will be DD only. I am sure there will be more games like Warhawk, or Socom Confrontation that are complete games sold online because they are online only games but no developer is gonna limit their possible fanbase to the gamers that have online. For one not every game will have multiplayer and with the Wii being the highest selling console devs. are not gonna ignore the casual gamers who don't even hook their system up online. No we will have physical formats for a long time with DD being an OPTION, but nothing more then just an option. Smaller games will we DD only but I don't think the day will come where Madden, COD, Halo, or any other big title will be available only via DD. Consoles are still new to online and even PC hasn't gone COMPLETELY DD. I don't think people realistically have an idea of how limiting it would be to go DD only or just what kind of resources would be needed.

Who say we have to pay? Mass Effect2 Did the same and it was free IN CASE YOU DINT KNOW Xbox Live Silver its free so you dont need gold to get the extra Content Also LOST PLANET2 for 360 Have Gears of war2 Mix in it thats why its gotr more

as far as Final Fantasy 13 yes 3 DVD's so what PS2 had 3 to 5 DVD's and you guys dint complaying MOSTLY because of VIDEO Cinematics games like Fallout3< one of the longest games i ever play was 7Gig and thats because NO CGI in it and abut Grafics games like Crysis Take onely 1 DVD Because its REAL TIME ALL THE TIME only Video Cinematic needs Blu-Ray

I HAVE YET NOT SEEN 1 REAL TIME GAME MORE THEN 7GIG's

Yet another odd instance of Cows suddenly pretending the PC doesn't exist after they flaunted the ability to play non-PS3 titles like Mass Effect 2 on their super rigs...

LOL, oh you were talking about me.. Sorry bud, I'm a manticore.

PS3 - 60GB Launch Day (250GB now though)

360 - Elite

Wii - not quite yet :(

Athlon Phenom II 2.0GHZ Triple Core, 4GB of RAM and a GeForce 285GTX (EVGA, in case you were wondering)

What I'm not doing is not pretending that the writing is on the wall for DVD9 when it comes to console development. If the DLC is free, then fine, I will claim pwned. But, if it's not... and that's a big if, then tlhbo tbh.

Any Hermit worth a hoot knows that DLC is the way to go when you have the most advanced gaming machine. STEAM (which I actually mentioned in this thread oddly enough, sir) is the best game distribution scenario. Sorry if I seem like I'm jumping down your throat, but clearly you made some bad conclusions about me and I wanted to clarify. It was the Lemmings who claimed that BluRay would be useless for gaming, but it looks like they are having to pay dearly for having that mentality at the onset of this console generation.

I don't understand this. Instead of crying about cutting out content, why not just spend a few minutes coming up with where to break the game into two parts to fit it on two disks. It's done all the time, and since the 360 allows full HD installs it's really no big deal. It's not like MS is making the companies fit the games onto 32 Meg cartridges or something...sheesh.

Sounds to me like Capcom is just trying to set up a bunch of extra DLC so that you "can experience what the game should have been like". The 360 like the PC is only limited by it's hard drive space.

I despise lemmings, why does that automatically make me a cow? I could have been a sheep, a hermit, a cow, or even a hedgehog.. LOL

Wanna hear something funny? I don't even use my dvd drive in my PC, because all my games are digital, that is the future, not blu-ray

You forgetting that over half of the US doesnt have highspeed internet. Disc format will be around for quite sometime.

And your posting history is essentially a giant PS3 advertisement. Sorry spud, them cards be stacked against you.

Also, believing the company that has shamelessly been releasing the worst DLC this generation has yet seen in droves that there's content of their TPS that can't fit onto the format that contained Crysis? ;Gullible''s written on the ceiling.

if they can fit Dragon Age: Origins on one dvd9, then i'm not sure why they can't fit a third person shooter on one dvd9

sounds like a scapegoat to me

It could be that LP2 is less-than-linear, making finding a cut position cumbersome because you may end up making a backswap if you go outside the preferred order.

Then it could be a goose who swallowed a toy that makes duck quacks.
