While all the rumors so far have indicated that the PSP2 will be about as powerful as PS3, newly leaked specifications for Sony's next portable would seem to indicate that it could be on par with Apple's next iteration of the iPhone and iPad devices.

French tech site 01net has released a set of possible technical specifications for Sony's PlayStation Portable 2 that were obtained via reliable anonymous sources. The specs reportedly come from a PSP2 Debug unit, so the final hardware could differ, but here's a rundown of what's on display.

  • Screen: 5" OLED multi-touch screen

  • Control: A Multi-touch trackpad (rumored to be on the rear of the unit), four face buttons, two shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, directional pad

  • Resolution: 960 x 544

  • CPU: Quad-core ARM Cortex A9

  • GPU: PowerVR SGX 543 MP4+

  • RAM: 1GB LPDDR2 in the Debug unit, with 512 MB possible in the retail unit

  • Storage: 16GB flash internal (like the PSP Go) and an SD slot

  • Connectivity: Wi-fi, 3G, and Bluetooth

  • Extras: Accelerometer, GPS, gyroscope, and two cameras: one front-facing and one rear-facing

The system is apparently less broad than the current PSP, but higher, and not pocket-ready. The resolution is exactly four times that of the ****c PSP, so emulation of older games may be possible. The report says that we can possibly expect a commercial release in November of this year.

The interesting fact is when combined with another rumor, via AppleInsider, a new picture forms. The AppleInsider rumors, which come from sources that were correct about the chips powering the iPhone 4 and 3GS, say that the next iPad and iPhone devices will use nearly the same CPU & GPU combination as the PSP2. Apple will reportedly use the ARM Cortex A9 and the PowerVR SGX543 MP2, which is a dual-core solution of the same quad-core GPU rumored for the PSP2.

This will put Sony's next portable on the same hardware footing as Apple's next product. The iPhone is already host to impressive titles like Infinity Blade, and the shared hardware may make iOS to PSP2 ports a reality, opening up a possible avenue for Sony.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until Thursday for confirmation on the actual system.

Damn it. This looks awesome. I wish the PSP2 doubled as the PS phone, so I could have a good excuse to get it.

I'm assuming it will have both. The track pad will probably be used in games more, since it would be tough to transition from buttons to a touchscreen very fast with the build that the leaked images have been showing.

The 3G better be free like Amazon does with its Kindle. Also its going to cost a ridiculous amount of money unless Sony is willing to take an absolutely massive loss.

I don't think people should worry about the battery life.... the specs are very similar to those of an iphone 4, and that has excellent battery life. And the PSP being a much bigger device it should have a better or bigger battery.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if it were free, but I doubt it. Downloading books on the Kindle takes a fraction of the data required to download a full video game. Maybe the convenience of digital download will come at a premium to cover the 3g costs to Sony, and remove the need for a subscription data plan. Just a thought.

they've already taken massive losses on the PS2, PSP and PS3 at the launch of all of those systems....so to answer your questions, OF COURSE they're willing to take a loss....they aren't very smart in making profit

....at least in their gaming

The losses would put the PS3 to shame though if the specs are right. I wouldn't be surprised if they charge 400 for it and sitll get killed on it.

That's exactly what I thought. There really isn't any reason to go with quad core on a handheld other then bragging rights. Typical Sony attitude...if these specs are true I can't see it being priced at anything near reasonable. This has me excited but if the thing is uber expensive and has a 30 minute battery life then WTF is the point?

That's not a good analogy. The Kindle offers free 3G because the download are minuscule (compared to gaming needs). Not to mention to play online multiplayer takes a lot of bandwith...I can't see any company supplying that for free.

yeah when playing graphics intensive games... I would say Rage HD would last you a good 5+ hours. Nothing great I know, but just look at how thin the device is, I'm sure they can fit a better battery on the PSP.

I understand most PC games don't utilize 4 cores. However, if 4 cores were the standard, they would. Based on these rumors, 4 cores may be standard in the new PSP. That means every game would be made with 4 cores in mind. From a technological standpoint, why is having 4 cores ridiculous?

I dont care if its not a good analogy, but if Sony plans to charge a ridiculous amount for the PSP2 which looks very likely they better not expect people to pay a monthly fee too.

Awh, you beat me to it! See right now I'm having the darndest issue in StarCraft 2. I have a Q6600. It's not supported, so I get worse frames than I should really. However, the reason it's not supported is they saw the majority of people had dual core CPUs at the time and chose to go that route. If you have a handheld where the only CPU is quad core, then all the games will support it, therefore it can only help.

Only way for this to be priced at $300 is if Sony's willing to lose quite a bit of money per system and I don't see that happening. $350 minimum.

so yea....$350 as well for me

more than a PS3
