Will it be another NEC Turbo Express (that uses six AA batteries and has a battery life of three hours)?
fantastic, I don't care if it's $500, if the specs are true and there are some interessting games announced it's a day 1 purchase. Even more if it really has a "other OS" for iOS compatibility and I can load all my iPhone games on it ^^
Is there some basis to assume that these components would consume an inordinate amount of power? Will it be another NEC Turbo Express (that uses six AA batteries and has a battery life of three hours)?

As noted earlier a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 consumes less power than a single-core, so presumably a quad-core would consume less.
Besides it's primary competitor doesn't really have much in the way of battery life bragging rights anyway.

Don't hold your breath :P
Though it might be able to run Android programs.
Sounds really powerful, I'm a little skeptical over the quad core, I thought the next step in cell phone tech was dual core cpu, so this is like cutting out a whole generation and moving the cell industry forward a matter of years. I cant wait to see this thing running, also it seems like it will be digital downloading only?? Is that true as I havnt heard of any source of hard media playback.

nope. dual-cores are coming out now, but this summer nvidia is bring out a 3D version of the dual-core tegra 2 and during the fall, they will bring out the quad-core tegra 3. if the psp2 is coming out in november, then it falls in line with the upcoming quad-core processors.

nah more like the sega nomad. 6 AA batteries that couldn't hold a charge and the device couldn't fit in your pocket.
god i hope it is DD only. that way i can laugh at all the ppl that prefer there precious hard copys, just so they can marvel at it sitting on a shelf.
i want that to end, starting with the PSP2

No. Battery. Life. Whatsoever. mrmusicman247
Depends on whether they're going for profit or marketshare. And whether 3G is optional.
I can see this easily topping out around $400 USD... which could hurt them if they even try to take on the 3DS.foxhound_fox
If they're going for profit then $400 will make a tidy sum.
If they're going after the 3DS for marketshare then I expect it will be priced near cost. A year ago the 16 GB iPad had a build cost including manufacturing of around $220-240 depending upon the inclusion of 3G, a large portion of this price being the large touch display.
[QUOTE="mrmusicman247"]No. Battery. Life. Whatsoever. foxhound_fox
Yes, very relevant to the topic at hand...PSP was the worst purchase of my life. The games were awful and I must have used it for probably 3 or 4 games (bought it at launch due to huge hype).

Much better. If it's anything over $400 and it will be DOA.Lol at anyone expecting this to cost 500$. The specs released are around netbook specs. If the specs are any indication this is going to cost 350$ tops.

the thing has wifi so 3g will be optional...and I doubt the US version will come with 3gI can guarantee Sony isn't dumb enough to not have games on a physical medium for the PSP2.
1. They would be sending all those customers straight to the 3DS, leaving Nintendo a nice 100% market share of physical handheld game sales. (Sony would not be so happy about that)
2. They would have no shelf space with games to advertise to consumers. (Lack of product awareness is the number one downfall of many, many, many DD games)
3. Retailers would not support the system without games to sell with them. (Retail margins are extremely low on consoles)
i have a feeling that this thing is gonna be the psp phone that is running an advanced version of android which will hopefully mean that its unlocked and i can just put either a sim card in it or it has cdma/LTE chips in it so that i can switch to verizon/sprint if i feel like it
Again for those wondering why quad core...
Single core A9 vs Dual core A9
NVIDIATI
Man, I cant wait for Tegra 2 powered phones!.
Will probably make a great media player, but just like the original PSP those specs are overkill for a handheld gaming platform. You don't need masses of power like that in a handheld device, as nintendo proved with the DS. I hope i'm wrong though and that it's a success, as i'd probably be buying it anyway.
[QUOTE="lbjkurono23"]two shoulder buttons?... this thing is going to be huge :PGxgear
The PSP units now have 2 shoulder buttons, so not sure why you'd think that's going to contribute to a bigger size.
Doh!! for some reason I thought it was four shoulder buttons( L1/L2 etc...) so disregard that post.[QUOTE="Timstuff"]It only does everything... Except phone calls. :(stereointegritythat is wat phones are for? 3G and Skype?
