You must've meant to post that in the 3DS thread. :P
wakefulness
You're aware that the 3DS can last up to 5 hours with 3D on, WiFi on, near the highest brightness setting right?
It lasts 8-12 hours with 3D used sparingly and wifi off, even more than 12 hours if you're playing DS games (or probably VC games too)
on topic: I'm ok with handhelds being able to deliver home console experiences sometimes, but I'm friggin' tired of them trying to be home consoles.
If all I'm hearing about the PSP2 is true, I'm getting really turned off by it, from a philosophical stand point on what portable gaming should/shouldn't be.
We'll kotaku's Nintendo sources condradics that:
With the screen's backlighting turned down (but not off), you'll get 3-5 hours of battery life while playing a 3DS game. That number extends to 5-8 hours if you're playing an older DS game on the handheld.
I'll have to wait and see. Battery life is kind of big for me. At least 3.5 hours would be enough for me on medium settings (wifi, med brightness, highest cpu/gpu output).
Either way, I view the PSP2 as more of a true handheld actually. It's not just about power but, the PSP2 has dual analog, touch control, Sony is really concentrating on controls this time along with power and this, this will open up so much. I can't wait! :D
Shutting down the wireless features on the 3DS also saves power, along with dimming the screens brightness, and more importantly shutting off the 3D screen mode.
Doing any of the above can extend the 3DS' life span up to eight hours, although this make make it only a fraction better than the DSi.
Kotaku has reported that the estimations of battery life are entirely due to the 3d mode and the wireless mode draining most of the power.
Which is from herehttp://www.techwatch.co.uk/2011/01/21/kotaku-estimated-a-short-battery-life-for-the-3ds/
Which in turn got its info from Kotaku.
I said turning off the 3D, WiFi or changing brightness settings will give the 3DS even more than 3-5 hours.
Note "any" of turning off the 3D, or WiFi, or turning down brightness can make it last up to 8 hours, which since changing "any" of the setting, it implies that changing ALL of the settings will likely lead to even longer battery life.
And turning off either WiFi, or 3D can lead up to 8 hours battery life for 3DS games (thats about as good as my DSi and better than the PSP) and when you play DS games it will be much, much higher. Probably around 15 hours for DS gaming.
I'm not saying the PSP2 won't be awesome, but with a 5 inch screen, and console like controls, how will it be the "true handheld" when we have no pictures, nothing but rumors, and rumors that say it will be another PSP trying to be a home console with its beefed up hardware and full PS3 dual shock control lay out?
If Nintendo and Sony were having a hard time getting people to carry DSs and PSPs in addition to their smartphones, they are even less likely to carry around a hulking device with a 5 inch screen potentially.
