I wonder the same thing  If anything its the worst era for pc games. It has less exclusives every year "hermits post huge list of lowbudget indie arcade crap exclusives" NOOO i mean stuff like fear, far cry, crysis, see where i am going? Hell even the companies keep saying of how badly the games sell. If anything consoles dominate not pcs  But some people are delusional.i have also heard people say that smart phones will kill consoles. People come up with all this bs like onlive on tablets will kill consoles. Not going to happen consoles will change with the market.

There will be consoles in the future because people will always want to buy them. Its as simple as that.. it doesn't matter if technology some how makes them absolete as he is leading to.. If that was the case Id like him to explain to everyone how iPads sell like crazy.. It doesn't make practical sense seeing as how they really don't have a specific use but people want them.. just as people will want consoles. So no this is hogwash.

Guild Wars 2 is not comparable to what consoles offer? Shogun 2 nor grim dawn nor DOTA 2? Also there's also tons of info on RO2 but I concede the last two since we don't know much of them. Seriously though what offerings do consoles have this year that makes them not comparable?
Consoles will ALWAYS have the advantage of a lower startup cost than PC gaming and therefore will never die.gamebreakerz__
Totally untrue. Consider the on-die graphics capabilities of the new Llano/Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge CPUs. A few more generations and we will have GPU/CPU combos that will blow us away.

correct subyman
consoles are always using old tech our leftovers n throwbacks.. we are teh curve.. we are always becoming smaller cheaper faster mroe reliable and are miles ahead in all departments.. when a 360 dies you toss it away.. when a pc dies you CAN attempt to fix it.
on day you will be a dinosaur in a museum somewhere dedicated to humanities pointless novelties and pop-culture.. while we will continue to exist in some format or another..
hes acting like vg chartz , omg i just came from vgchartz and they have the nerve to call nintneod 3ds a wanderswan , and saying xbox360 is gonna catch ps2 lifetime sales in 15 million more units how is that even remotely possible
when 1- the 3ds is out selling psp -overall , and nintendo ds is still seling like hot cakes lol , two nintneod handhelds in my book dont make 3ds a wander swan and 360 is more then 100 m units away from passing ps2s life time sales, and its got 40 m to even get to wiis door ,
with that said all these web sites talkin about sales and what s going to die , im starting to not believe vg chartz-dont know why i have , but ya try to avoide any non gamespot site or ign or metacritic , if you gonna bring analyst up , make sure they are telling the truth cause i dont see consoles dying in 2 cycles if that were true then you might as well hand nintneod the crown lol
im sure that a massive, multi billion dollar industry that has done nothing but grow at a consistently increasing rate over the past few decades is going to simply disappear. im sure that in a couple decades there will be no people playing games in front of their TVs and everyone will be sitting in front of a PC. yes, that sounds totally realistic.
Who? And two cycles left? That sounds like another 20 years to me. And I agree with the guy who made the second post in this topic, we all should put away our crystal balls.

yep people love utility from a device.. and its very difficult for the console to not to start try and mimic its bigger maker. and when the line gets crossed enough the utility of a conolse will be show to be a sham a shell of whats possible on a pc and it will become a pointless device..
consoles are like mini-disc's good intentions but their miles behind mp3 and mp4 players and as a result went the way of the dinosaurs..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRCteeZTrjE&feature=related
Interesting....
But, i don't think he's right.
Basically he's saying in the future a TV will be all you need to play games, so he's saying there will only be a OnLive system that can run everygame.
The way i see it games still differ alot, we got Kinect move and Wii and that brings flavor and differentiates alot of games so unless all the major game companies decide to have all the periferals the same for their games that will never happen. And they will never do it because that's what makes them different and makes people buy their brand.
If i were to agree on his take i'd say the game companies will only sell you their periferals and give you some sort of fee so you could access their games or exclusives so basically you wouldn't pay for a ps5 but you would pay a subscription and move/pad/wtv but i still find it somewhat far-fetched.

comparing consoles to mini disks is pretty asinine. Mini disks never really took off. consoles have already taken off and are overwhelmingly successfull.
but whether or not you think consoles are just inferior shells of what a PC is, it doesnt change the fact that consoles arent going anywhere. sales patterns indicate that they will continue to grow in profit. there are zero signs of a downturn in the industry. There is no actual evidence that consoles are going to decline. only the usual jargon from hermits about how superior the hardware on PCs are and how that will make everyone stop buying consoles. Sorry but the market (and reality) doesnt agree with you.
the biggest problem is that no matter what specs, hardware, and numbers you PC gamers boast about, the actual performance of PC games does not appear to be that far ahead of consoles (like here or here), especially to the average consumer. The truth is, the pc will never erase consoles.
A lot of what he talks about is really nothing new. For the people who are saying that consoles will never die, do you actually believe that? We're talking about an industry where you grew up in, it's such an insignificant amount of time, do you think that innovation and new ways of using technology as a way to entertain us will become stagnant i.e. the same way as you're experiencing it now forever? Come on now...
I actually believe that the current PC market trends might actually outlast the consoles, hell, consoles nowadays are trying to become PC's in the first place, anyone who has even gamed this gen on consoles can see what I'm talking about and quite frankly I see this trend continuing. That said, yes consoles will probably die or change into something where the current console market can't really relate too, but guess what, eventually so will the PC market.

consoles are already starting to decline as we speak, they already hit their peak. By the way, mass effect 2 and crysis 2 both have hoorible frame rates on console. Not to mention ign picked parts that look the most equal, yet the pc version still looks alot better on video that only shows up to 29.9 fps. But it isnt pc thats going to kill consoles, its ios/android/pc and other more adaptable platforms that have much more function than a console.Yeah, I remember when people like this said cinema's were going to die because of VCR's
tomarlyn
Edited: Wth for some reason I thought you were talking about the death of the movie industry, I should have drank that freaking coffee lol.
You're talking a prediction of the death of how an industry expresses itself. Yes consoles might not die two gens away, it's only a prediction. And quite frankly, I don't believe that cinema will survive forever, to be completely honest.
That said, do people really need a device that represents companies like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to find quality in gaming? What if in the future gaming will be an entirely free system industry, where people can create at will and game at will without being slowed down by any one device. A future where gaming will be a far more free form of creativity than ever before. Where you will actually find a quantity of quality titles that far outmatch the movie or music industry today--of course we'll end up getting even more crap in the long run. Is it that important that Sony does this, or Nintendo does that? The only thing I see being hurt is making places like SW obsolete.
Is this system that we have today of consoles really needed, if quality in gaming continues in the future? Why care so much about what platform the games are in? Instead care about gaming itself, about the games. Then again, I'm saying this in system wars XD.
It's possible what we define as consoles today will die out and two generations sounds likely, that will be laround 2028.

Yes bow down!
....i need to change my pants
I think some of you are too young to realize how much technology is advancing.
A few decades ago there were no cell phones or internet.
So much has changed since then and technology is advancing at an even faster pace.
Who's to say that what we define as consoles now is no longer here in another 20 years or so?
Absolutely stunned that people don't know who Scott Miller is, and claim the man is unknown. Also stunned by the fact that people don't think he knows about business. 3DR got where it was in the ninties largely due to Miller.
This lack of familarity may be due to a generation gap or the fact that many here are not familar with the history of PC gaming. It is like young people asking who is Clark Gable.Absolutely stunned that people don't know who Scott Miller is, and claim the man is unknown. Scott Miller isn't really well known name, nor is he a console developer. He's a PC developer from Apogee, so obviously he has his own ideas. :P
EDIT : While I can see this could happen, I can also say that I've heard this kind of talk a LOT in the 90's, one of those people was Bill Gates. He ended up later joining the consoles, lol.

Actually, in terms of names, he's not a big name to throw around. He's not a big name to drop in terms of real life game convo's I've had over the last 2 decades. I would be stunned if a lot of people in RL or SW did actually did know who Scott Miller is tbh.

There was some big names to come out of id though (I'm tempted to name them, but I don't want to go further offtopic, but they are big names), for sure, but I don't think Miller's name ever comes up in convos for one reason or another, but he's certainly done well for himself. I can say I think this is the first time I've ever seen his name ever in SW, to be honest. :P
