If the game is ambitious and big, there is excuse, when did the last GTA released? thats right 4 years ago, GT5, FFXIII, MGS4 are all games that took long to be released.
GT5 was a flop in more than one way. Yamauchi needs to get with the times - he simply cannot rely on flashy graphic (for 1/4 of the cars), some great physics and half-assed speciel events. He should rather scratch most of those cars, some of the hysterical details on the premium cars and add something truly new interesting to the franchise.
MGS4 was released in 2008 and had been in development for 4 years. Hideo has said so himself that they didn't quite know what the PS3 would be like and once they knew it was.. well you know what most developers have said about developing on the PS3. Considering how we've seen MGS: PO/PW/ACID/4/Rising since MGS3 Id say it's appropriate that we won't be seeing MGS5 before next year.
FFXIII must've been in some sort of development hell. The game is nothing, but corridors mixed with cinematics and combat. It's quite clear to me that whatever SE is doing, they ain't doing it well. Just look at the recent FF MMO, FF Versus and the yet to be seen FF Type-0 (outside of Japan).
The only game that deserves a 4-5 year development period is GTA. They make massive game worlds with a lenghty main story mode + additional things to do.
I stand by my statement. If Naughty Dog can make UC1,2,3 AND TLoU before the release of the above mentioned, yet-to-be-released games there is something seriously wrong.
what you said does not really matter.
The point is all of the games I've mentioned are of the top franchises of the history of gaming, they are automatically ambitious and huge, they all took time to perfect, like you said, the cars details in GT5 are insane and the content of that game was gigantic, MGS4 had insane detail to every bit in the game, plus dedicated mechanics for certain scenes and loads of new ideas to be found, FFXIII is the best looking RPG this genwith beautifully rendered worlds add to that the high production CGI.
All took 4 years or more to release, all got great sales and praise reflecting their ambitious approach.
Saying only GTA deserves to be in that category is a load of crap.
Hell, even God Of War 3 took 4 years in development, a hack and slash game.
Last but not least, Team ICO's development cycle is expected to be long when you look back ICO and SOTC releases and that was on the PS2, as you said PS3 is harder to develop for, let alone the transition to next-gen consoles.
