Another MS first party flop. Jesus, this game is a disaster.
It's sad to see the once great Rare reduced to this. As much as I made fun of lems for hyping this game to the moon, I really wanted it to be good.
It had a great art style, nice water, and it's a game about pirating (who doesn't love pirates? I know I do). This game and Cuphead were the only games I was going to buy from the Windows 10 Store. It's hilarious to see lems damage control but at the same time it's sad to see Rare fail. This whole thing is bittersweet for me. Makes me wonder what MS and Rare were developing for the past 4 years.
Crackhead 3 is a guaranteed shitshow and SoD looks like a low budget game. What do lems and Xbox gamers have to look forward to this year from MS? This year Sony and Nintendo plan to dominate and MS is having another year of disastrous flops and droughts like they had last year.
I think saying its a disaster is overdoing it.
the core of the game is good. the sailing is fun, PvP ship battles are fun, there is a good and pretty refreshing framework here. honestly, everything in the game is good and pretty well polished, aside obviously from the body-free kraken, server issues, and spawn camping issues they need to find a solution to. it just lacks variety and complexity, the kind of stuff that allows cool emergent gameplay to happen on a regular basis.
people have been comparing this game to No Mans Sky, but I think Destiny 1 is probably a better comparison. Remember how bare-bones that was at launch? then Bungie updated it and managed to maintain a pretty healthy online community by improving the game with updates.
I think SoT could very well do the same thing. In its current state, the $60 is not justified and the game lacks any real depth, but I appreciate that its something a bit different at least.
you can call this post damage control if you like, but its my honest opinion.
