Six months of the Nintendo Switch

Yesterday I was playing Mario Kart in the morning with my headphones on the sofa while my wife slept. Then when she woke up, I popped it on the TV and we played together. But it was a really nice day out, and our new apartment has a balcony. So I picked my Switch up, grabbed a beer, and sat down next to my wife outside. We hung out and chatted for a few hours on the balcony while I played BotW and she browsed the web. Then I came back inside and kept playing while she worked on some chores that she had.

This is exactly what Sega wanted the Nomad to be back in the day, and what I always wanted out of a console and a handheld - one that puts a smaller form factor and power draw than my PC to meaningful good use. It's a really cool gadget

It has far better hardware than both the 3DS and Wii U, and its best title being at launch is nice. Wii U port or not, neither of those last two systems had a title as good, so the Switch earns points in my book.

The biggest issue right now is that it's out in the PS4's arguable prime, so why would I play my Switch with titles I don't care about when the PS4 just got off a year with two all time classics and might be better this year? The handheld mode might be the reason but other than a few neat cases it's not a useful system to me as a handheld. Beyond that, my PC is lit right now, and offers an advantage with higher settings and increased format support for games. The Switch's handheld aspect would at least be cool if we got a Prey or an Overwatch once in a while.

@davillain-: YES! I do share your same view for the Switch, it is a Next gen console that does it's own thing without trying to follow the 4K buzz.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to jump into 4K, but there's so much limitations to get in and tv manufacturers are already gearing for 8K.

1) No TV cable/satellite companies can air 1080p correctly otherwise it's compressed at a a wired 1440/1080 resolutions

2) No network companies are airing their shows with 1080p Cameras

3) In fact, theyre still using 1080i and 720p cams

4) So far Blu-ray can give you the true 4K experience, but the sad part that its already a dying format when Netflix, Hulu, and Prime are becoming better and also get all movies

5) The issue w/streaming 4K is also a governmental issue, due to net neutrality and the fact that not everyone can afford higher internet speeds or the limited selections of ISP in areas that isn't near a major city. I mean that Google Fiber, AT&T Fiber, and Verizon FiOS is extremely limited.

6) Is only for the enthusiast market, despite the tv market price drops, 4K content is only limited to 4K bku-ray releases, 4K streaming services like netflix but needing to pay extra, not sure for prime.

7) To play games in true 4K, the only available option is PC gaming, the ps4pro and Xbox One X aren't true 4K gaming devices.

So, I'm glad Nintendo isn't going after 4K until the mainstream market is truly ready, when it isn't. Probably in another 5 years I hope, because we sure aren't ready for 8K yet.

The problem with 4K as of right now, it is too soon for that. 4K should have been reserve until PS5/the next-gen Xbox are all ready for that, not in this current-gen cause nobody expected 4K gaming this gen on a console.

I don't think Blu-Ray is dying just yet, I still buy Blu-Ray movies and Blu-Ray disc are also helpful to some games that benefits well, so I don't see those leaving anytime soon.

I'm not really ready to move on to 4K and if I was, it'll be on PC alone. For now, I'm satisfied gaming in 1440p/60fps on PC and just play exclusive games on the Switch and I gotta say, it's nice to see Nintendo is still about innovating and doing there own thing, not from the other two guys.

@Litchie: Ehhh... I think I've played around 10 hours of it, but honestly I only bought it because I couldn't find a copy of BotW anywhere on launch day, and still wanted to play something on my new Switch.

I enjoyed the game, it looks absolutely great but it's very much an arcade experience... although for 20 euro's, I do think it was worth it.
I've yet to play online, since the two times I tried to I couldn't find a match, but that was all the way back in march when the system launched.

Personally, for me, it does a semi-decent job of filling the F-Zero gap, although it obviously has none of the charm that F-Zero has due to the lack of characters and nostalgic locations. If you're itching for an exciting, over the top fast race game, then I would spent the 20 euro's on it.

The Switch is a decent buy right now if it was actually able to stand on its own legs. But as someone who has owned a Wii U since December 2013, with most major titles for the system bought, is it appealing to me? Nope, not really. It's 2 best games are on Wii U. It has an arcade fighter also found on Wii U. Splatoon 2 is carbon copy of Splatoon 1 with the same dumbass decisions. Do not care about Arms, Bomberman or Mario Vs Rabbids. So nope. Aint fo me.

Also that part about letting the console go once sales fade is bullshit, PS3 was doing horrible and Sony still managed to produce quality exclusives for it its entire lifetime as well as reach sales of the Xbox 360 which was destroying PS3 in the first couple years that they were both on the market.

I was interested in NX before we know what was it. I was asking around the most loyal fans what they wanted from next console ( when we didnt know anything about it ). Everyone was asking for

1) Great power to be able to stand next to competition

2) Third party support

3) No fancy controllers and stuff, just a great console

And i will add

4) To finally have a healthy generation cycle with great support to the very end.

What we had in the end of the day ? Power similar to Wii U , third parties is a big nono when things will get even worse in the near future when next-gen consoles arrive , system is all about fancy controllers and stuff like 2 in 1 hybrid and docks and Joy cons .... And last the big question ... Will Switch actually make it to actually have a healthy life , 5-6 years that is , with game after game or will end up in life support after few years again ?

Funny thing is suddenly everyone forgot what they were asking for and even if Switch in fact is exactly the opposite of what they really wanted , they cheering Switch for everything ! I mean if thats not the pinnacle of fanboyism and brand loyalty i dont know what is.

Oh boy oh boy , they better pray for next-gen consoles to be a bit late or else dust is coming. And i dont care if Switch sells 20million by then or 200 million. Amount of games per year is all that matters . I hope im wrong , lets see.

Not really, the most Nintendo has ever supported a console was the Gamecube and that still did not have great sales. They poorly supported the 64 and the NES/SNES was kept float by a lot of third party publishers.

Sony had tons of exclusives every year from 2006 to 2013...they even finished super strong with God of War, Last of Us, Gran Turismo and Beyond Two Souls months prior to the PS4 launching. That's probably the highest support of a consoles life, ever.

First time I didn't buy console within the first year it came out. Still don't want it and see no incentive. Maybe when they announce a new Smash and show Pokémon.

The Switch is so confusing and expensive...ok you buy the 300 dollar unit, you have to buy a couple 70 dollar real controllers, you have to buy some sort of charging dock for the joycons right? and then the games are 60 bucks each? Sony and Microsoft are so much better all you have to do is buy the 400 dollar machine (which comes with a controller I actually want to play with) and the games.

While I can't speak for everyone or him, I been seeing few folks here want to see Nintendo be on par with both Sony/MS in terms of hardware and have the same 3rd party support. Gamers keep forgetting that we don't even need 3 powerful consoles in this dying age, I want to have more options, not the same damn thing we can get from both Sony/MS. This is why I love Nintendo for NOT following Sony/MS footsteps.

@davillain-: I quite agree with you. Sometimes it's hard to really nail down exactly what I want prior to seeing a system. It's only when I see it that I'll figure out if it makes sense for me or not. A more powerful Nintendo console would have been fun, and of course having more 3rd party options is also great but I already owned a platform that covered that before the Switch launch. With the Switch, that's not necessarily what I needed out of a new platform. The Switch as it is works well alongside owning a PC. Both are very nice systems to have at the same time because they serve different purposes as far as gaming machines go.

What do you want out of a Nintendo platform? You're a PC player so what is it you look for out of a Nintendo device?

Everyone buying a console for the games cant play elsewhere, having a PC or not. Its not Nintendo things neither Sony or Ms.

Why people dissed Wii U ? Why people let Wii collect dust despite its amazing titles and userbase when competition was going strong ? Why N CEO himself called Wii U a secondary platform ? Those are the questions you should ask yourself and come to a conclusion what Nintendo consoles missing and things like that are happening again and again and again and let Nintendo know.

Licking Nintendos ass again and again with every system because of 4-5 amazing games every generation .. you wont see any difference. Still secondary , still in life support way sooner than it should , still dust collection , still waiting months for something epic to play , still no 3rd parties to fill the gap while waiting , still underpowered , still expensive hardware and games prices ... Will Switch change that ? Will Nintendo finally understand this is 2017 not mid 80s ? its up to you the fans to let them , all i care. Personally im renting the console and the game i want to play for as much as 15$ for 2 days and then 5$ every day if i keep it more , finish the game and im done. Ill play 5-6 games like that in a generation and im done !!!

Those are the questions you should ask people , not what i want from Switch as a console when i own a PC.

I am asking you specifically given the gaming machines you own what you want out of a Nintendo platform. Like, you game on PC so prior to the Switch announcement, what were you looking for? Something more powerful than your PC?

You only game on PC, right? So you want Nintendo platforms to be more like a PS4; given that you consider that a primary platform. But you don't even own a PS4, so what do you want out of a gaming console? Or are you totally satisfied with PC, which makes sense because PC gaming is great, let's be honest. ;)

As PC user you mean what i was searching for ? For the best system that will have value = games that i cant find on Pc. That was PS4 but what drove me away was the mid gen upgrades so i was looking to NX. When NX got a reveal about what it is, nope.. not for me.

This is not about power this is about games.

Yes i wanted Nintendo to be more in par with our era so their systems wont die out of nowhere and theyll keep providing games in the same pace other competitors doing. Also i wouldnt say no for Switch to have 3rd party support ala SNES or GC. Because you all dissing 3rd party support but its a huge plus. GC is the finnest example of a great console with SNES being close. Its for a reason those 2 considered the best Nintendo consoles ever.

What they have in common ? Both powerful for their era , both traditional consoles and BOTH had great 3rd party support.

For me right now, third party is kind of irrelevant for me if it's the exact same games on PC. Indie is different. The more indie games on Switch the better but I don't really want to buy underperforming versions of 3rd party games on Switch when I can get them on PC; unless of course said games aren't on PC.

I mean check Resident Evil remake and RE4 for Gamecube. They were excellent exclusive titles ( time exclusives even ) that made gamers shit their pants ( not RE4 personally but thats another story ). Coming from a 3rd party developer !! Why not Switch ? Why not Wii U ? Why not Wii ?

Why the hell someone has to buy a second or a third platform because he cant play 3rd parties on the console would love to have as main ? Think about it a second, whys that ?

As PS4 , the moment i was about to buy it mid gen upgrades rumors surfaced so i waited to see what PS4 PRO was about and now im waiting to see wtf is this 2019 PS5 rumor. Im 1080p gamer still , no 4K monitor no 4K tv. This 4K nonsense is not for me since its all BS from both Sony and MS.

With that being said i had debates with cows , told them that games on 1080p will have better graphics on PRo is logical to, they were mad about it telling me " sony said only res will be different ". I think i debated with tormentos about it. Guess what ? I was on point , games indeed have graphical differences in many games on 1080p on PRO than original PS4.

So another BS from SONY i wont tolerate. So now im on the waiting list while keep renting , no problemo.

Now a new rumor surfaced that we are closer to next-gen than we thought. So why to buy PRO ? Its all up in the air this generation to me. If we wouldnt have these mid gen upgrades and fake 4K and BS like that i would be a PS4 owner since UC4 bundle.

Ive played already 85% of the exclusives i want to and if we are closer to next-gen products than we all think ... nah , **** it. I can wait for a bit longer and keep renting.

@AzatiS: Lots of 3rd party games on PS4 to choose from though. You've got Persona, Dragon Quest, Yakuza, Nioh, Let it Die and Bloodborne just to name a few.

The Nintendo Switch will also experience some Dragon Quest love, an upcoming Shin Megami Tensei, Super Bomberman R, Fast RMX, the upcoming RPG from Square Octopath Traveler, Azure Striker Gunvolt, Mighty Gunvolt Burst and Dragon: Marked for Death for some indie stuff.

So there are all those games not on PC that are from 3rd party developers too.

I guess if you can opt for rental, there is no real need to own an additional platform. How current is your PC build? Would a theoretical PS5 outclass it would you say?

Either the Switch is 100% a home console, or the notion of the home console is an outdated concept. You can't say that just because it is not as powerful as its main competitors, that it is not competing with them. This is not how the mainstream consumer views these things. Also, you can point to the battery and the screen, and whatever else, and that is also arbitrary. There's no rule about what a console is not allowed to have or else it loses its status as a console. For the Switch in particular, you could say that the Switch lets you take the game away from the television, or you could say that Switch allows you to take the television with you.

Switch software is clearly in line with the home console IPs, and being developed as home console games. They are even building a home console style of online gaming platform on the Switch. BotW, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, are not in the same line as 3DS games. So when Nintendo says it is a home console, they are telling the truth because that's how the library is being developed.

And yes, I'm aware that people are starting to take more complex games with them on gaming tablets, but that also puts the whole distinction of home console vs mobile as arbitrary. If you can access your steam games at home with a PC and play it on a TV, and then leave the house with a gaming tablet and log in to steam to play the same games, then I guess your PC is also a handheld if the Switch is a handheld. The only difference in the experience of that and the Switch is the technology involved, and that's arbitrary.

I also find myself really happy with my purchase from the start, instead of having to wait. BOTW is seriously one of the best games I have ever played. Mario Kart 8 is gorgeous with friends and playing 4 players has never been easier. The indie games are actually really good and thanks to Unreal Engine 4 support - the games are flowing. Mario coming out end of the year and we know Metroid Prime IS in the works and also a console Pokemon RPG?? Like shiiit, these games and news are from 6 months. Who knows what else will be available or announced in another 6 months time.

Combine all of the above with playing ANYWHERE. You don't think it's important until you got it.
