Skyward Sword... FLOP of the gen thus far?

With the year practically over, it's pretty obvious that the flop of the year was totally The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword.:( (Unless people want to count Duke Nukem forever, which was practically known to be a failure for months before release:P)

But the question I ask... Is it the flop of the generation? We all know how big the Zelda series is and how many gamers, reviewers or game developers think the Zelda series has its own standard when it comes down to what it does.... But a 7.5?????:|

Pretty much one of the biggest games of the Wii and one of the most HYPE'd Wii games since Galaxy 2..? Not to mention the swag song to the phasing end of the Wii. The game was in development since late 2008 (full development after Spirit Tracks shipped in Q2 2009 + they started concept stages as soon as TP was shipped), and it didn't even manage to score AAE here, which GT5 at LEAST managed to do, same with Spore! What do y'all think?

If not, why do you think so and what will the biggest flop of the gen would be for you thus far? GT5? Spore? RAGE??

Maybe it's the flop of a generation for System Wars using Gamespot.com metagame...but, it's certainly a great videogame. Thanks Nintendo for giving us a True and proper Zelda Exclusive for the Wii. It took almost all generation, but it's arrived. Sure, it's an AAA at metacritic, and it's an A at Gamespot.com, but that's how the metagame works, lol.

As far as the drop, it was AAA HYPED and got two grades lower of a score A. However, the lack of Sheep outrage I think factors in too. Not sure if I care too much, but SS is certainly a contender for SW metagame, sure. :P

As far as reaction in SW, it's not like the Toilet Princess situation we had in SW, lol. Toilet Princess is trademarked by SolidTy Inc.

It's the GS review flop of the gen yes. Talk about a cry for attention. The game is fine though.

If you want to go by the amount of hype and score it received here then sure. Your other choices I'd also agree with apart from RAGE, I didn't see as much hype for that game as the others.soulitane

Well RAGE, I mean it's pedigree made me feel that a 7.0 on the system that made iD popular, is just amazingly disappointing.:| Like seriously? Especially after DOOM 3?:? How low can you go.:o

Yeah this game was built from the ground up for the Wii, not like Toilet Princess that was a last gen game ported over to the Wii.:P One thing that sure bugs me is how even GT5 managed to at least score an 8, despite being a big disappointment... But SS gets a 7.5?? ZELDA?:| It's amazing how it flops on its 25th anniversary too.:P

I still think the others were bigger flops considering the hype that the games got, I'm not sure how spore was hyped on here but I do know in general it was hyped a lot on the internet. It was known for quite a while that RAGE was just going to be a console port so I don't think PC gamers had that high expectations for it but obviously they wouldn't think it was going to be that bad. Guess we'll have to wait for doom 4 to see if they can still make a graphical powerhouse for the PC :P

A game developed for the GC for two years and pushed back a whole year, despite being practically ready for shipment for a Wii-side launch? Yup totally last gen. It's not like it differed from the GC version by a mile either, but hey I guess if mirror world and tacked-on motion controls is your thing.:P

Duke Nukem Forever, Lair, Too Human- a 10 on the scale. Catastrophic flops a mutha won't soon forget. This s*** is some house of pancakes floppage.

RAGE, GT5, Spore. Shocking at the time but who cares now?

As you see it belongs in the middle.

GT5 for sure. Cows were CERTAIN it was going to at least match Forza 3's 9.5. Plus the damage control that ensued for the next couple months was magical.

Well it's a flop on Gamespot but really only on Gamespot.

GT5 was a bigger flop but its a big flop by system wars standards no matter how terrible of a reviews it isfueled-system

One of the best games this gen too, imo. Tom can have his opinion, but in MY opinion, he's dead wrong.

There were a few games that flopped so hard that it ruined the companies that made them.

Too Human - Silicon Knights made one of the finest games of last gen in Eternal Darkness, and then they made Too Human which flopped so hard that the dev fell off the radar, making the disappointing Xmen Destiny and have since had to lay off much of their staff. They seem to be virtually dead unless Nintendo or MS bails them out.

Haze - Free Radical is the team that made Goldeneye on the n64 and went on to make the fantastic Timesplitters games. Then they made Haze, which flopped so hard that they folded and were eventually bought by Crytek to do grunt work for them. The fall of Free Radical also nuked the Star Wars Battlefront series, which they were developing but had to scrap. Free Radical turfed development but kept the rights to the game, and that led to a chain of events that put the rights to SWBF3 to Rebellion, a shovelware dev.

Lair:Factor 5 was a smaller independant dev but they have been around a couple decades, making games like R-Type, Turrican, and the SW Rogue Squadron series. The release of Lair gave them no money even after making a patch that ditched the awful sixaxis control. The damage was done. They no longer have the ability to make games. They will likely end up like Free Radical, bought up by a big fish.
