I didn't finish either game, but I played SS far more so I have to go with that. I also did like it better.
Skyward sword has great motion controls, a great clerification of the Zelda story as a whole, great puzzles and level design as with any of the other zelda. Arkham City has a great follow up to Asylum, improves the combat and almost all of the other gadgets. But the two game share a common fault to me. Both the worlds in which the games take place in seem small. However batman does save itself with having a very active world, in which Skyward swords world didnt. But on the other hand the story in SS makes up for the empty world because it takes place when there arent any real towns or anything yet at that point. Both games also share another thing. They both have very simple combat that is just so fun that it doesnt matter how simple they are. But in my opinion, Skyward Sword wins for me because i just simply prefer the great controls and combat in that game over the great controls and combat in batman. But both are great games.
Skyward Sword was okay. Definitely not Zelda's best outing. Honestly, I'd say Arkham City is better.

not to mention that nintendo did more for the video game world with SS then Batman did with AC.Sagem28
Leave SW forever.
While I chose Arkham City over Skyward Sword, I agree with what Da_chub said

What did SS do for the videogame world? lol
It showed developers that forcing motion controls onto the gamers is not advisable. So it has saved many other games from the plague of motion controls.
Did Arkham City do that? Nope. XD

It proved that Motion Controls are completely viable and can improve/deepen a core gaming experience intuitively.

No.....just NO...
The controls are the main reason I can't even bring myself to finish the game. The blurry **** pixelated graphics in SKyloft don't help either.
They arn't really the same kind of game, and while I love both, I would have to give the nod to Arkham City. It is the better game IMO, by a good margin too.

The controls were easily the strongest thing going for the game. If it wasn't for them, this game would have been really disappointing IMHO

He does have a point though, SS graphics do not look good on my HD tv it's too blurry sometimes. But nothing game breaking, but I wish Nintendo would get with the freakin' times!

This right here folks, is the winning post... and it concedes Batman AC the victory.
And still, SS didn't do sh!t for gaming, because like I said beofre, it's not like everybody uses them now or sees them in a different way.

Thats the thing, for those of use who would prefer pad controls (and there are a lot of us that do), Skyward Sword was horrendously disappointing. Which is why Batman AC takes the cake here, because at a gameplay and design level, it is far superior to SS.

Well the way things "blurred" in the distance was intentional. It was intended to make the scenery appear as thought it was an impressionist French painting. I think it worked pretty well.

Mediocre games don't need defending tbh... and that last pic you posted looks like ass, there's no excuse to make a game look that bad, specially after a good looking game like Wind Waker.

Skyward Sword is an exceptional game if you are open to the control method and the art styIe that Skyward Sword took is an art StyIe. Some people might not like it, but I find it absolutely gorgeous. It's one of those rare games where I often find my self stopping and admiring the scenery.
In the end I'd have to say that Skyward Sword and Arkham City are THE two best action adventures of this generation and each have their merits. I just feel Arkham City has greater variety and content with just as much polish distributed amongst all it's quality components.

The fact that Pikminmaniac said that it would've been disappointing if it wasn't for the controllers should tell you a lot, because unlike you guys, a whole lot of gamers aren't really into the motion controller gimmick. If McShea hadn't listened to GameSpot and decided to unleash a massive publicity stunt for pageviews by flopping Skyward Sword, nobody would dare claim it's a bad game.princeofshapeir
LOL no.
people would instead say "GAMESPOT ONLY RATED IT HIGH BECAUSE NOLSTAGIA AND BECAUSE THEY ARE NINTENDO FANBOIS" or something like that, had McShae rated SS higher.

It's not a "gimmick." A gimmick is something that's tacked on and provides no real function other than luring you into buying the game. Skyward Sword's motion controls are actually fundamental to the gameplay because the game is designed around Wii Motion Plus. If you reverted back to a traditional gamepad the entire game would have to be extensively redesigned.except that Skyward sword is far from mediocre :|[QUOTE="Shinobishyguy"]

Some amazing dungeons (some of the best yet in the franchise IMO), and one of the best Zelda soundtracks, and some of the best boss fights in the series as well?
the game also has some of the best, most challenging combat in a Zelda game , but that's associated with the motion controls, so, I guess that doesn't count.
I don't see how anyone can defend the motion controls in SS.
It was such a gimmick. I mean you swing left and the enemies immediately block left, swing right, they immediately block right. Its like a 1 frame animation.
If reality is what they were going for, then give us the ability to stab the enemies toes. The fact that the game really only relies on 4 directions to attack (diagnoal attacks are blocked by a right or above block from the enemy), makes it extremely boring.

Zelda: Skyward Sword
Can't stab toes...
0/10 wouldn't play again.
Meanwhile, games like Skyrim and Mass Effect get free passes for their abominable "combat"...I don't see how anyone can defend the motion controls in SS.

Im really surprised by all the SS answers. I thought everyone was going to just say "oh lol zelda is dead AA all the way..." Is it really that good?... I played it for a little while and it didn't hold my interest, but I didn't play enough to judge it or anything.

Hey, I don't know if I'm included in this or not, but being fair, for my initial post ITT, I gave the story point to SS, there's no question about it... but the rest is quite debatable as you can see. Where someone sees brilliance, others see crap and the fact that "some of the best bosses" still revolve around the motion controls gimmick, is a point that not everybody will agree.

but thats the thing, is it really a gimmick if the entire gameplay design revolves around it? I mean if it were tacked on like Twilight princess sure, but this is probably the first and only action game I've seen that actually make great use of motion controls. I mean you're free to dislike them because everyone has their preferences but still.gotta love it when people throw around baseless adjectives when it comes to bashing games while people praising it actually back up their points[QUOTE="Shinobishyguy"][QUOTE="Glutenbob"] What remains is a mediocre game with archaic game design and even worse HCI design. It's not a gimmick. Do you even know what a gimmick is? Kinect is a gimmick; PS Move is a gimmick; waggling the Wii Remote to make Mario jump in the SMG games is a gimmick. Motion controls in Skyward Sword are not a gimmick because they're fundamental to gameplay. You said it yourself: take away the motion control aspect and you have a game that's significantly less appealing and interesting. Please Log In to post.
