How has M$ screwed up? They're on track to outsell their previous console. The same can't be said about the PS3.death919

The RROD is just killing them. And until they fix that and/or the 360 gets cheap enough, nothing significant will happen sales wise to change that, unless of course the upcoming games just turn out to be incredible. For as bad as things started for Sony, they're still now only a few million consoles behind the 360 in sales, and with the upcoming new 80GB PS3, Sony might just actually be in 2nd place by the end of the year, if not actually before that time.

The very fact that this is debatable is a win for MS. After the death of the Dreamcast I did not think any company would be able to step in and sell consoles. MS has been and still is thinking about the future. They put a massive dent in Sony this gen putting them in a position to take that a step farther next generation.

It's amazing they survived at all.

As for RROD, it is a problem, but if that has scared anyone in SW off from the system that is just sad. I have had consoles from the ps1 to the ps2 (three ps2's) to the xbox and 360 go down on me and way, way to many video cards. I don't assume my ps3 will stay together either. If that scares you off gaming is not getting along well with you.

I'm afraid that asequel to a succesful IP has far more potential than that of a new succesful IP simply as because of the hype. The sequel doesn't even need to be as good as the original provided that the original was a smash i.e. Halo CE and Halo 2

Hell, no. I take it as a given I will have troubles. The more high end the tech for its time the more I assume it will happen and plan for it. More then one 400 dollar video card has died on me inside a year yet I don't mind it because I plan ahead with a warranty and the like. RROD sucks but its not a big deal.

If you are scared off by not having your 360 for a week or two while it gets fixed and thus have not been enjoying a great console, thats damn sad.

At what year did Sony hit 100 million? How many PS2 were sold before the PS2 hit that casual price point? The 360 already has in Europe and it's not doing much. The PS3 is only coming up on it's 2nd year in the market and it's sale are only slightly under what the PS2's were at this point and time.

Well its pretty obvious that Sony are catching up to MS really fast, despite 360s year head start PS3 has already destroyed the 360 in Japan and outsold it in Europe, PS3 has also outsold 360 the 1st half of 08. Before this year is over PS3 and 360's sales difference will be minimal.

PS3 & 360 are fighting for 2nd place while Wii looks on.

MS is not playing the game for today. Seriously, get a clue. Spend money now to make money later. Battling Sony in the console arena helps both their PC business and gives them a say in the future of the medium. You should take a look at the big picture and see exactly why MS is willing to take a loss, just like Sony is willing to do.

Neither company is made up of fools. The are playing a game of chess and thinking years into the future and making moves to get them there now.

How is it sad? Who wants to pay $350-$400 for a console just to have it break on them? I have seen more then a few people post here about how they don't want a 360 until the issues are ironed out. Yeah they fix it for free but how many times will I have to send it in? Do I not play my games as much in fear of my console breaking? Who wants to deal with problems like that?

First off, if I'm paying that much money for a product, it damn well better not crap out on me. Oh, and excuse me if I don't have $100 or so lying around under my couch to just go ahead, send that and my RROD console to MS, then wait a month to get it back, assuming of course my warranty has run out. What happens if it happens a 2nd time? 3rd time? 4th time? If you're wealthy enough to afford to keep fixing your crapped out consoles, more power to you. Not all of us have that luxury unfortunately. I've been fortunate enough to own a 360 that has never given me problems.

The TC made a thread yesterday saying sony was 5.5 million units behind. Am I to believe that the ps3 sold 1.5 million units in one day? This is pure damage control because sony is in third place right now and the FFXIII bomb. I look at it this way.. in 2012, if the PS3 outsells the 360 by then, the way software sales are looking it will just make the PS3 look more like a blu ray player and less like a console. yeah.... halo did not keep the ps3 from selling more so i doubt gears is going to push 360 numbers by a lot. plus 360 only one major region america.

Sony lost market share because competitors learned from their mistakes last gen and what the ps2 did to catch all those consumers. But still the PS3 in the end will win the console war but it wont be as easy as in previous gens.

MS will fix RROD for free even if you don't have a warranty. Just send it in. No matter how many times it happens. In fact, if it happens more the once your repairs get priority and it only takes a week. Good lord, at least try and learn whats going on instead of making baseless assumptions.

Actually it was 5 years.. Sony also doesn't report their numbers the same anymore. Last generation they were announcing shipements. This generation they are announcing the sales they sold to retailer. With that of course they won't reach that 100 milestone as fast.

It seems like you don't have a proper perspective on just what it was like when MS joined the console game. You don't seem to understand that listening to people talk about the console in this light for those of us that were gaming long before MS was a console maker is crazy because it seemed unlikely that they would even survive the first two years. It seems like you don't have an appreciation for just how much they have changed the equation.

They are now a real contended and have positioned themselves to make a run at the future. I mean, outside of SW, MS strategy is damn impressive.

it was 4-5 due to very few people owning the ps2 because of manufacturing delays, it didnt start selling untill the end of 2000. But 100 million isnt shipped, its sold so sony announcing shipements is irrelevant

People don't need two 360's just like they don't need two ps3's. So, the 360 released first, it will also hit its peak first and so on and so forth.

Blue-ray is the only thing that can keep Sony sales steadier. As long as it is the cheapest on the market anyway.
