How could an anticipated PC exclusive be shipped without DX11 support? New gamesshould use this current technology which is DX11, and considering that the game isn't developed for consoles no hardware is holding it back so why not maximize the full potential of the PC version by adding DX11 support?

Cause they didn't need to? DX11 could have helped with optimization sure and put in some pretty effects, but that would add to the development time and cost, something troublesome for a small developer making an ambitious game.

Witcher 2 has many effects that other developers off loaded to dx11 that they did with their dx9 implementation, and is still looks to be one of the best games available if not the best.

Well, apparently it is coming to consoles (remember a year ago they said so, here's the link: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/the-witcher-2-still-heading-to-console) but, like a bunch of people said, it's more cost efficient and doesn't look much different compared to effects that can be used in dx9 to supplement it. Like tesselation is used in witcher 2 even though it's dx9

Hopefully they patch it in later, if for nothing else than performance reasons.

Lot's of DX11 features are backwards compatible with dx10.1 hardware ... it's some of the fancy stuff that isn't. ('least so I've heard...)

DX11 was released just 'round the same time that TW2 was started in it's development, if not a good bit after.. it always takes time for people to implement new directx', however they coulda started as 10.1... oh well.

They hardly seem lazy, implementation of new dx' always take quite some time, it's just a part of what they've done, dx isn't magic. x2

With DX11 you can target 9, 10, 10.1, or 11-level hardware with the same API. Obviously you can only use the newer features like tessellation on an 11-level GPU. The only requirement is Vista or Win7, which is why people still use DX9 so that they can support XP.

People were more grumpy with Crysis 2 since Crytek said the game would have DX11, along with the disappointment over its graphics in general. Because of who they were and what they did in the past, people were expecting Crytek to exisize the potential of what could be done in DX11

Witcher 2 never claimed to be anything more than DX9, and the graphical fidelity is leagues better than the originals.

A game can look amazing on-screen with DX 10...Boot DMC 4 in 64-bit & DX 10 sometime, and you'll see the evidence.:D

Capcom optimized the game for both.

Which makes no sense since XP is really old now. TW2 is not targetting 8 years old PC. Almost every PC that can handle the game shipped with Vista or W7.

WIndows XP is still a popular OS at the moment. More people are making the jump to Windows 7 and vista, but truth be told there isn't a strong reason for them to do so.

It's popular among the old PCs, PC builds that can't handle TW2 anyway so it's pointless to support it.

And btw there are strong reasons to move from XP onto W7. Security and stability are much much better in W7.

I would have liked to have seen it used.

The top four things that make DX 11 so cool are:

1. More accurate and less resource intensive lighting/shadowing solutions.

2. Tessellation

3. Better texture compression (HDR texture compression too).

4. Multi-threaded rendering

Higher quality lighting/shadowing that takes less resources = good.

Tessellation, when pared with textures effects means no more squarey looking barrels, wheels, etc. and a lot more depth and realism in structures, and a more orgnaic feel to natural landscape.

Better texture compression means higher resolution textures, and a higher variety of textures.

And finally multi-threaded rendering means a HUGE boost to performance on multi-core systems.

But if they managed to make a DX 9 engine look as good as they did (frankly the best looking RPG of this generaiton so far), and perform well, I'm not too distraught.

At least this way the poor souls still trudging along with XP can play the game.

Though really, guys, you should upgrade.

First explain why they should need to use DX11. Whilst it is nice, DX11 hasn't really been utilized fully or really all that effectively. It certainly adds some nice bonuses, but most gamers are still probably using DX10 (though there are a hell of a lot of DX11 cards out there).

According to steam survey, there's only ~16% of people on dx11 hardware, but that's not exactly 100% relevant, since dx11 is quite backwards compatible... So even the non dx11 cards will see a benefit.

DX11 being backwards compatible simply scales back to older DX cards AFAIK, so it's really only beneficial to the developer. Unfortunately, I don't know how much time or money it would take to implement DX11 features into a game, as I have no experience :P I can only assume they were left out for a reason, and not just on an arbitrary whim.

The Witcher 2 was done on a sub 10 million dollar budget or so, which is pretty damn impressive.

i was shocked when i found that out recently. there are bits in some of the scenery vids like small rocks on the ground and the detail on some of the pillars where i thought "oh yes thats some very nice use of tesseation and geometry shaders" and its not using them. if devs can do witcher 2 type stuff with DX9 then why do we have DX10 and 11 again? :P seriously though the game looks great. they mentioned in an interview with PC format that they might upgrade the engine for DX11 but thats not a promise. their argument for not using it is that they looked at what they wanted to do and they found that they didnt need DX11 to do it..which is fair enough. no point hauling a big toolbox to a job when you only need a philips screwdriver and sticky tape.

Remove DOF from the advanced dx11 options, and maybe tess, and it'll probably perform better than in 10/9 (that dof is a terrible performance hog).. dunno what exactly you can look for, sorta like graphics on a 'high' setting vs 'very high' diminishing return, methinks.

It's probably because that's all they have to work with, so they make use of it. Plus the kit is all the same.
