Sony: Competitors "Continue Peddling Add-Ons"

As the new year begins, Sony Computer Entertainment America's public relations department has issued a newly-formulated feature run-down that favorably compares the PS3's value to that of Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, directly calling out competitors who have fewer included features.

In a Wednesday press release headlined "Keeping Gaming and Entertainment Simple," the company emphasized out-of-the-box PS3 features such as Blu-ray functionality, built-in Wi-Fi, "huge hard drives," free online gaming and "Ten years of value with a future-proof system via firmware updates that offer new services and features."

A price and feature breakdown by the lowest entry points for each console claimed that the standard 80GB $399 PS3 gets more entertainment bang for the buck than a souped-up Xbox 360 Arcade and a Nintendo Wii.

Driving the point home, the statement read, "The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet and adds clutter to the entertainment center.

"And the Wii's lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution.

"So as PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones'."[Sony's emphasis.]

With the Consumer Electronics Show kicking off this week in Las Vegas, and both Sony and Microsoft presenting keynotes, the statement may be a precursor to some gaming news.

Asked about the reasoning and timing behind the e-mail blitz, an external SCEA rep from PR firm Porter Novelli told Edge over the phone, "We're entering CES, and gaming systems are certainly something that people take a hard look at there. That was the motivation. I'm sure you'll be seeing announcements from Sony and all of the gaming systems. We thought it would be a good time just to remind everyone of our strong offerings."

In the past, Microsoft has held fast to its decision not to include certain features with Xbox 360, saying the a la carte method gives consumers more choice. And with over 2 million Nintendo Wiis sold in the U.S. in November alone, it's fairly clear there is a certain large audience that doesn't care too much about the entertainment offerings of a PS3 or Xbox 360.Edge

This is almost exactly like that price add on Sony did when the PS3 was first out. The one Sony got called out for.

At best lemmings can counter with they do not need those features.

Kinda hard to argue with that chart tho.

good post, these were the things that tiped the scales when I decided to get a PS3, your getting more bang for your buck, plus free online is the icing on the cake!

Not really. It could be argued that there is no reason for Blu-ray in a games console, not everyone needs a wireless connection. There is no mention of the 20 gig hard-drive for the Arcade models for only $20. And I not sure, but do all models of the PS3 come with HDMI?

Whatever the case, this argument is hilarious.

I bought my PS3 for gaming and blu-rays. I admit, yet my 360 and Wii are meant for what they offer, gaming.

They've taken away plenty of features instead of add them. Where's the PS2 backwords compatibility that was there at launch?

From a SALES perspective, Sony's way this generation has resulted in fewer sales.

However, from a consumer standpoint, I'm glad the PS3 is the way it is, as my 360 really was more expensive than my PS3. That being said, not everyone is in my situation, so it is what it is.

The PS2 was a sort of "A la Carte" style machine, so I'm surprised Sony isn't aware that's the best model to sell to consumers.

Strip the model, sell the parts for a higher price, and the consumers are very happy.

This will probably result in NEXT GEN having more barebones but more expenisive machines, which I frown on, but the consumers have spoken.

This was a pretty good argument by Sony. Of course, some people aren't going to need everything the PS3 has to offer, but it does do a good job of telling why the PS3 is a better deal for those who want the features they listed.

Kickinurass

Yes, ALL PS3's have HDMI 1.3.

...and M$ laughed at Sony's Preposterous HDMI at PS3's launch. This is why Competition is good, yes?

Also, even today, the 360 doesn't support HDMI standard, HDMI 1.3.

Yeah, but Sony would have to do that for the 360 as well, only the ELITE 360 comes with HDMI cables.

Xbox live gold is cool and all but a continuing charge will after a while cease to make a console "cheaper". Isn't xbox live about $50 a year? People who have owned a launch console and have had gold the entire time have paid what about 150-200 for live so far? A recurring cost that doesn't "pay" a sum off ceases to be cheaper given a long enough timeline.

A certain car may be cheap to start but if it requires more maintenance than another car at which point does the owner realize it has "costed" more.

This is all assuming the owner of the xbox 360 wants to play online. What I always hear is people buy an xbox cause their friend has one and they want to play online with em so this means they must be paying for gold.

Microsoft is basically targeting those who can only see short term and can't see just a few years ahead. This mind-set is why the econmy went in the **** This is why the 3 big american car companies are almost out of business. People bought cheap cars with $1000 factory cash back and got a good loan then uh oh when gas became more expensive it became more expensive than a car that costed just a little bit more at the start. Not to mention the big 3 aren't as reliable either. Its a perfect comparison to the xbox. Cheaper to start, larger recurring cost i.e. gas, not as reliable, etc.. Its like the same freaking thing in fact the most reliable and cost effective cars are japanese its the same freaking thing just replace microsoft with ford back in the SUV boom and replace sony with toyota.

Not really, neither of the other two (Arcade & Wii) have HDMI or Component cables packaged, so that's kind of irrelevant.

I don't know what to say, I'm enjoying my 360 without the blu-ray player and I sure as h*ll didn't get a Wifi adapter for $100 (I got it from ebay cheaply). I love my ps3 but most of my playtime goes to the 360 for the most important factor of a gaming console, the GAMES!

Except for the fact that they spinunneeded features into the argument and forget to mention the $20 HD NS offers. You can't call it an argument when you provide misleading oe incorrect information...

LOL 50+ for an HDMI cable? Oh man dude you must buy those name brand Monster cables. That is a HORRID waste of money.

http://www.amazon.com/Eforcity-Digital-Video-Cable-GOLD-PLATED/dp/B000UHQVOW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231389224&sr=8-3

4 bucks, originally $50.00 bought it last month and it works perfectly.

You can goto a local electronics store and buy them for 10-15 bucks as well. There is no need to dump all that cash on the brand name garbage.

I know, but you can also use the $20 Nintendo Wi-Fi adaptor with the 360. So if Sony is assuming the consumer is stupid enough to spend $100 on a Wi-Fi adaptor, then it stands to reason they're dumb enough to buy a Monster (rip-off) HDMI cable. :P

I'm not arguing that its not. But regardless, you can still have a wired connection on the PS3 can't you?

Maybe its because I have little interest in online games (I played XI for a month or two and quit), but I'd prefer to use the wireless simply because I hate having wires everywhere. I have too many already.

IT's all they have and it's the only reason why a non PS3-exclusive game lover would want to buy a PS3. Because of the additions it adds (such as a blu-ray player) that the competition doesn't.

So.. all those features for the PS3. How's that working out for Sony?

It's "cheaper", so they MUST be selling more than 360s, right?

Or maybe....just maybe.... people know they don't need to buy a wireless adapter to go online. Maybe they know that they don't need to have a Gold account to download content and enjoy most of the games available for the system.

So.... with this different Sony's bringing up again... how'd the "cheaper" PS3 do in November?

That's not the problem with the ecomony. Benjamin Bernanke believes just the opposite; that the problem is a global one, the result of years of never before seen trends that have resulted due to longer life-spans and shifting of assests to long-term finances. Assets set up for people after retirement age. This problem has been compounded by the fact the US is borrowing from developing countries and a few other problems.

Bernanke's entire speech is here, and should help to stop the misconception that short-term investments are to blame for the state of the economy.

The problem with the economy I think is mostly attributed to the war. Most large scale wars are followed by an econimc slowdown. It's just that this economic slowdown coincided with a number of other instances. The good thing is that most recessions are followed by an economic boom.

Lets not forget most of us have the pro,it already has a hard drive,Wi Fi is an option if you want it you can have it,I personally have that choice and dont use WiFi.Blu Ray is a HD video format, not at all necessary to gaming.$50 a year for Live, most of us can handle it.Using the arcade model in this arguement isnt right.Hardly any of us are buying arcade models and then going out and buying all the available accessories.:roll:Most of us are buying Pro models, bringing them home, hooking them online with our free ethernet cable, paying our $50 for Live and playing great games, and thats all we are paying for.

That's a perfectly logical argument if you ask me. I'll admit I got much more value out of my PS3 even though I love my 360 also.
