Nintendo's genius hybrid concept has tanked Sony's marketshare since 2017. And MS, while pitiful last gen are trying new things with Gamepass and their recent Bethesda purchase and their future looks brighter this gen.
Sony are still very successful, but they have a much smaller piece of the pie in terms of the competition. During the PS4/Wii U/XB1 era, Sony had as much as 80% of the console marketshare, at this point, they are down to 30%.
What do they need to do to reclaim their throne which was ripped away from them?

LOL! Sony hasn't lost any ground (well except in Japan) it's just that Nintendo is selling more units. They're really not fighting for the same market. And I don't want to hear shit about Xbox. A bunch of worthless Game Pass enabled accounts don't mean a damn thing if the division doesn't even make a profit. 🤣
The Nintendo Switch has sold in 79.87m units after 46 months on the market. Here is how it compares to other consoles when launch aligned. In the same time frame, the PS4 was around ~67m and the PS2 was around ~69.5m. The Wii was just under 75m. pic.twitter.com/ox3NQy8Ye4

Ouch! Cows will not like this. They were calling that Switch will die after 12 months back then.
Here's the thing. Nintendo is now basically 75% handheld only. Sony isn't in the handheld market. Microsoft went from the same pie Sony was working on and decided to move onto another pie entirely.
One could argue that Sony has a higher percentage of the regular console pie than ever before because their two closest competitors moved on to other pies leaving the traditional one to Sony.
I will agree that they need to continue looking at other pies though. PS Now isn't nearly the service that Game Pass is. I will give them credit for jumping in and continuing to innovate in the VR space. I'm interested to see how their VR 2 set improves over the original.
The market is definitely changing; some for the worse, some for the better. All of them need to continue to innovate.

It's going to outsell the PS2.
I expect them to be a little upset, but it's time to acknowledge the best selling console ever will now be from Nintendo, who has taken the biggest chunk of the market for themselves.
It give Sony 3 months before closing doors. It was a good effort.
They'll be more than fine for the time being, but will continue to lose marketshare.
Nintendo will get more AAA games with the revision considering strong sales and MS's purchase of Bethesda and giving games away with gamepass will also eat into Sony's marketshare.
@casey-wegner: I'm honestly not sure handhelds should be considered the same league as consoles. Handhelds are made to be multiple per household (one per person). Consoles are meant to be one per household.
Regular Switch sales should definitely be included as they can be consoles. Switch Lite should not be counted as that's a different market.

If this is true, why did Sony handhelds fail so spectacularly?
Switch is a hybrid tv console as well.
The only reason people are not trying to count it is because they are on the losing end. 😂
@casey-wegner: Actually, I was making the same argument back then. PSP was decently successful. PSV failed because Sony decided to crap on their consumers and ditch the handheld entirely.
@casey-wegner: but that doesn't mean anyone lost market share, considering a lot of users have both PS and Nintendo, since people chose to have both and not one or the other, their target audiences are very different, unlike Xbox, which share the same target audience as PS (and it's an utter failure as usual).🤷🏻♂️
Besides, I don't doubt switch will outsell PS4, I just believe they aren't competing.
People are not replacing their PS4 for switches, nor they are replacing PS5 for switches. That would imply a market share loss and that's not what is happening.

You do understand marketshare is just your piece of the market pie right?
Sony's marketshare was dominant over Wii U and XB1, obviously it's going to suffer dramatically when another big player (Nintendo) makes the fastest selling console/platform ever and outsells them.
That's a whole lot of conjecture. That being said, I think they need to jump on a GP/PS+ hybrid. Maybe a significant discount on new games, but 1 year+ games are released all for a monthly payment.
@casey-wegner: With this gen having just gotten the competition on the market and Switch having a 3 year lead... is this market share boost for Switch simply because it has a three year head start? Are you able to prove otherwise for your argument?

Switch is selling faster than PS2, PS4, Wii and all of the best selling consoles ever.

@casey-wegner: PS5 is the fastest selling console of all time. Once Sony is able to keep up with the historic demand...

PS5 has been out for half a year. All early console sales are merely based on availability. Switch is doubling it in monthly sales.
Maybe you should wait for it to win a single month of sales before you make such outlandish statements that it has any chance at all against Switch.
PS5 is sold out worldwide. You cannot obtain one at MSRP without getting lucky. The only reason Switch is able to win any months is because there is a processor shortage preventing Sony from making enough of them. The Switch is not sold out.
And where were you during the WiiU era when this was your reality?
It's hilarious to see you sheep crawl out of your hole after hiding for years when Nintendo was the laughing stock of the industry. I mean, they're still the laughing stock, but you are feeling a false sense of hope because they've got some casuals back on their side for the time being. Namely parents buying Switch's for their kids to keep them distracted while they work at home during the pandemic.
Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He’s too old for that.
You can take that quote, apply it to the Switch and it holds the same merit. By shilling for a babysitting tool you have embarrassed yourself. Congrats.
