Drawings =/= Development. Those patents were allegedly from 2010. Good thing the Wii U was announced before then....wait!

Isn't the concept the whole point?
You guys do realize this is most likely the PS Vita and how it connects with the PS3. SilverSterlsI agree. They don't need some sort of tablet controller for the ps3 when the vita can do the same thing. Honestly, I hope that sony does this with the vita.
Yeah they're just taking the right measures just in case the WiiU is successful. If it isn't a hit they'll scrap it, if it does well then the next Sony Move will be coming. + 15 points for staying true to their "business" tactics.

Drawings =/= Development.ShadowDeathX
Hopefully they release near launch. Imagine. Games developed for Wii U and PS4. Since Kinect is not similar, it won't get those games and get a huge lack of 3rd party support.
Next Xbox Out.
LOL, you're delusional if you honestly believe that 3rd party developers will be ignoring the next Xbox because of that.

Doesn't matter. Sony still came up with the idea first based off this info. You can twist it or reason with it all you wish, but at the end of the day, 2010 comes before 2011.AmazonTreeBoa
That doesn't mean they came up with the idea first. It means they put it on paper and submitted it. Patent =/= reveal, or invent. Don't see how that's so hard to comprehend. Companies sit on patents and never do a damn thing with them.
Again, twist and try to reason with it all you wish. 2010 still comes before 2011. The least you could do to attempt to help your argument is link to Nintendo's patent showing they had the idea first......oh wait, you can't because Sony beat them to it. Have fun in your fantasy world there junior. Nintendo was probably working on it for a long time though. They couldn't have had it all planned out 1 year later and get all the resources required for it to work. Unless Sony had some ideas long before then, but there's no proof of that and that's not likely.and in the end, this patent will only exist so you can use the vita as a rear mirror for your car in riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge racer. In all seriousness i expect some great things from vita-ps3/4 connectivity.

I figure that's what this patent is. Nothing more than a vague reference to what they aim/aimed to do with the vita.zarshack
How many people are actually going to buy a Vita and a PS4 though? It seems like a waste of resources.

There should be arrows pointing from Sony to Nintendo.
When I use my PS3 controller, it hurts deeply knowing that the ideas behind it came from somewhere else. It hurts... hurts so much.SolidSnake35Don't hurt me any when they have the games I want.
Cows seem more upset than usual.
It's okay to admit that your lord and savior tends to copy the greatest video game developer of all time, guys. Really.

Yeah, but Nintendo actually has a physical thing that works.Big difference.
I just don't see why people see this as a bad thing. Sony doesn't have to release a tablet controller, but a controller without a touch screen would be pretty quaint considering Nintendo's new controller.PurpleMan5000I don't see it as a bad thing, but rather a funny thing.

Not really. The whole point of the "lol copying" argument is the idea that the concept was stolen. Sony already had the concept.
Edit: Even assuming this argument made sense in the first place, it's defeated by something else. Timeline.
2010. Sony had concept.
2011. Nintendo put similar concept in motion.
2012. Sony ... ? Wait, Sony didn't do anything. It's just another one of their thousands of patents.

I imagine Nintendo had a copyright earlier than 2010 if they had a working controller in 2011. Just a guess. It doesn't mean anything either way, but you gotta feed the fire, you know?

Yeah, but Nintendo actually has a physical thing that works.
Patent has never counted as a measurment of "being first". It's the actual implementation of the technology in an existing product and popularizing the concept.
Examples that illustrate what this means:
a) Sony patented it first, but Nintendo released it first on the market, which is what matters.
b) Virtual Boy had stereoscopic 3D technology, but the product was a commercial failiure and so it failed to popularize it, so we give credit to 3DS.
I don't know why you are trying to question the consensus. This is how things work.
I don't mind Sony doing this as long as it's laid out pretty similar to the Vita, just without the rear touch pad and with L2/R2 buttons instead. The WiiU controller just looks so uncomfortable, and that thing in the pics doesn't look much better. If this happens then it's a positive for Nintendo since third parties will support this kind of function if more consoles have it.wraigth
Why is that positive for Nintendo? It's a positive for gamers first and foremost who look forward to innovative games.

Higher chance of third party support which is what they're pushing for next gen. Never said gamers in general wouldn't benefit, but if both Sony and Nintendo push this play style there will be a lot more support.Pretty sure I reported this months ago.
Companies make patents all the time for the most obscure stuff. Nothing to really go on here.

Exactly. Innovative games. Not control schemes, games.

New control schemes allow for new types of gameplay and genres.
We can finally play RTS games on home consoles for example. SC2, Diablo 3 etc.
I am a bit confused by the responses here. If Sony patented this in 2010 and Nintendo didn't announce the Wii U until 2011. Then how is this Sony copying Nintendo?ChubbyGuy40
Patent =/= announce.
Exactly, and Sony have not announced anything. This is just an old patent TC dug up.

So "innovative" means playing pre-existing types of genres on tablet screens? And pray-tell, what purpose will the TV serve in such a mechanism? Because all of the action is going to need to happen on the screen you're touching. Unlike the DS, it's not essentially one extra long screen anymore. The screens are separate and the most natural way to play the Wii U will be to hold the controller in your lap, creating a gulf between you and the main screen.

There haven't been a control scheme that's opened up new genres in the last 15 years though. Diablo was on the PS1 and so was a lot of strategy games.
JLF1MarkII
When I say "new genres" it means old/dead genres are feasible/revived.
You'd have to gimp the RTS experience in order to play it on a standard controller, which is why they for instance created different and dumbed down levels for strategy games on consoles.
Don't get too hung up on the actual wording, you know what I meant. RTS is basically a new genre on home consoles.
Another genre that the tablet controller is useful for is MMO. We're gonna see MMO's on home consoles next gen, you can bet Titan will be there.
