I undserstand phasing out backward compatibilty slowly on newer versions of PS3 as the PS3 library swells, but what is Sony's excuse for not providing BC along with the launch PS4's?

Now its not tottally hopeless though as SW emulation is still discussed...but a native BC would have been handy, what say guys?

Getting PS4 on launch though.....

Getting a PS4 still. They said that they have past games on it somehow so I'm not worried there.

Sony could deliver X86 builds for PS3 era games i.e. download X86/GCN program and recycle blu-ray game disc for art assets.

To sell some more PS3. More importantly, to re-sell game in digital form (or via Gaikai rental service)

Pretty disappointing indeed, I've always liked my videogame systems to be backwards compatible considering I always keep a collection of games.

But I really really hope playing them do not require cloud based streaming or digital downloads, as they kinda defeats the purpose..... even a reasonable software emulation will do.

If they make us do DD or cloud streaming, not only we have to pay for them, but also the our libraries of PS3 start collecting dust unless you juggle consoles.

With the new architecture it's impossible for backwards capability , the only way they could do that again would be to go back to cell and developers whine and cry when forced to work with the cell. You want to blame someone blame the developers for crying about the cell so much Sony finally had to give in.

Because that would require Sony to make a custom mainboard to could fit the PS4 APU, teh GDDR5 RAM, teh Cell, the RSX, and the XDR memory. They would also have to produce more "teh Cell"s and RSXs. You want to have fun paying for a $700 console?

Omg why can't people just get the simple concept of the console architecture? Really, is it that hard? If you want backward compatibility that bad keep your ps3. Stop complaining because I don't know what the big deal is.

All this QQ'ing just because Sony won't include hardware that would bump the cost of the console up. People really are sad.

Why would I buy a new console to play its predecessors' games? Its a needless expense, I'll just keep my PS3.

is it that hard to hold on to your ps3 when you get a ps4? Also they aren't using the same cell design in their models so adding backward compability would have upped the cost to make it and been more for you guys. Sony also has Gaikai so wouldn't it make sense to wait and see what they are doing with and if they will allow you to stream ps3,ps2 games before crying about it.

I'd rather have the inconvenience of keeping an old console around than having to pay an extra $100 just to play old games on a new console.

Who cares? If you really want to play PS3 games then there's always the option the option of not throwing your PS3 in the trash can. If the PS4 library is so bad that you don't think a system is worth purchasing unless you can play PS3 game, well s**t save your cash and don't buy it until the library is there. You'll probably catch a lucky break with a price drop.

The real reason: They would have to reprogram the games (practically fron scratch) to run on the new architecture. Alternatively they'd have to invest in PS3 hardware inside the PS4 for accomodate. Either way, it costs too much and isnt fisable from a business perspective.

anyone complaining about BC is a tool. Until the PS1-PS2 there wasn't anything called BC. The x-box - 36o didn't do BC for most of it's games.
Your short term memories make me want to smack some sense into you all.

They will have streamed game packages, Sony wants everything playstation on PS4.

Gaikai was purchased by Sony, and they are the ones handling all the streaming. I remember testing out some Gaikai streaming PC games aabout a year ago and was very impressed. They worked and ran much better than OnLIVE streaming service.

why? Only reason we got these collections because they were HD collections. Their wouldn't be a reason for people to go rebuy these games for the ps4 unless the developers rebuilt the game to take advantage of the ps4's power.

B/c the cell architecture was dumb in the first place for a console and they ditched it to go with an easier platform to program for. BC may not be native, but we don't know what they are doing with their cloud services yet as they already announced. Plus, I already have my PS3 so if I want to play PS3 games it is really easy to do so.

Who gives a sh!t? I'm buying a PS4 to play PS4 games. I have my PS3 just like I still have my PS2 and PS1. Sucks for people that like selling their old consoles or for people that want more space underneath their TV but it doesn't bother me. I'd rather have them forget BC and keep the price down than have a $599 PS4 that will struggle to sell.

I think people are more irritated because we live in a world where I can buy any android device and/or apple product and have all of my stuff easily slide into each device at no extra cost... The fact that people wont be able to slide over hundreds, if not thousands of dollars worth of software they purchased in this day and age is becoming unacceptable. I can see logistically why it cant happen for PS4, given the coat hanger abortion known as the Cell, but it would be really great if Xbox720 allows it.

DanteSuikoden

and then when that old console breaks you'll have to hunt down a used one through Amazon or Ebay without knowing if it's gonna last or if it even works. That's why BC is important. Maybe not for a closed minded peasant like you but for retro gamers and to conserve gaming culture it is important. And beside, who wants to have a mess of like 10 consoles connected to a single TV? Then you'll have PS3, Xbox, Wii, Wii U, PS4, X720, PS2, etc. So why Sony can't put BC in the stupid thing? Like if they couldn't emulate the PS1 and PS2 at least....

If people didn't care about BC they wouldn't waste money on the HD collections and digital re-releases and that's the problem. They want to milk us.

It is pretty upsetting for me. I'll probably just buy another PS3 (old one died) when it hits $99-$149 this black friday and wait 2-3 years on PS4 if at all.

realistically nothing... But its not as simple as that in the mind of modern day consumers... and what I mean by that is if both sony and mS say they have no plans for BC in any capacity, then its a wash, but if MS does it and sony doesnt, we're not talking about sliding over a few games here and there, we're talking about taking a massive library of content in the age of the live arcade and dlc etc... and seamlessly supporting it on the next iteration.... It could be a mighty big bullet in someones chamber. I know that I'd buy a console that didnt make me rebuy Trials evolution, and Shadow Complex etc... I want to keep playing the games I love from a central location. May sound a little like wanting my cake and eat it too, but we're also talking about an investment in next gen gaming and Im the consumer...
