[QUOTE="AAllxxjjnn"][QUOTE="idontbeliveit"] there was a codec conversation everytime you defeated a B&B. taking that into account, you should know theres well over 15 conversations. if cutscenes should stop storytelling, then what would be the point of them? they would just be useless features in the game that add nothing whatsoever.

idontbeliveit

No, the cut scenes shouldn't be there AT ALL.

so are you saying that you dont like games with cutscenes? because if thats the case then i can imagine you not liking a huge number of games.

Actually i never said i don't like games with cutscenes. I deal with them. I said cutscenes are outdated. And a number of games are evolving and beginning to not use cutscenes, they're taking a more innovative approach to story telling in games.

In your opinion. But I like them, and so do millions of other gamers that love MGS. If you like SnoozerCell with it's zero story and zero replayability, then by all means play it and enjoy.

In your opinion. Just pointing that out, in case you didn't realize what you just said was your opinion. You probably didn't realize that though. PS: I don't care how millions of other gamers feel.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Splinter Cell is a bad franchise, but for some reason I personally have never liked it. I played Chaos Theory and Double Agent and neither one of them were able to hold my attention. The gameplay feels like it takes itself too seriously and the stories were really nothing special. In my opinion, the only thing the Splinter Cell series had going for it would be the graphics. As for the Metal Gear series, I have always loved the gameplay and storytelling in each (except MGS4's). MGS can deliver entertainment and convey a powerful, moving story that makes you feel emotionally attached to the character (again, with the exception of MGS4) without taking itself completely seriously. Each MGS game has an either an emotional or entertaining moment that I can remember... I honestly can't say I remember much from Splinter Cell except that I spent most of the time hiding in shadows.

P.S. To the guy that said Sam Fisher kick Snake's(either one) ass: get real :P In a fair, no weapons one on one scenario, Snake would definitely destroy Sam :P

CyberRuler

Yeah, I remember the first SC, but honestly, I can't remember Pandora Tomorrow, I only got about 2 missions into Chaos Theory, and I didn't bother with Double Agent after playing it for around 10 minutes. It just seems to be updating itself graphically but the stories aren't memorable at all so they all just sort of meld together and the game-play has stagnated.

I don't know.....Snake (either) always seems to get slapped around at some point. I know she was the 'Boss' but come on bro. And CQC? So Asian martial arts which are close quarters combat, didn't exist before Snake and Boss got together and came up with it? It's all in fun, but my money goes on Sam, in a close, close fight.

[QUOTE="idontbeliveit"][QUOTE="AAllxxjjnn"] I already told you why MGS gets picked on. Halo, Gears, and Final Fantasy are RARELY compared to other mediums, while MGS is said to up there with the best movies in the story department. It relies solely on cut scenes to deliver it's narrative. Go ahead and compare those to movies, even though Halo and Gears also rely on in-game narrative for most of the game rather than using cutscenes ranging upwards of 20 minutes as their main source of story telling. Cut scenes are overrated and out-dated in this medium. Many developers are straying away from them. GOTY awards don't really matter since gaming journalism is a complete joke.

AAllxxjjnn

MGS4 doesnt solely rely on cutscenes for explanation of the narrative, they also vastly use the codec conversations to give further explanations. besides, Metal Gear is known for its extensively long cutscenes, its nothing new, its part of what the series is.

There were like 5 codec conversations, and they are just as intrusive as the cut scenes. I know it's nothing new, i've played all the MGS games. I'm saying cutscenes should stop existing as the main source of story telling in a game.

wait , what the hell, why does everyone complain about the cutscenes just skip them if you dont like them lol

SC on the other hand is all about gameplay... thats the only thing that does better than MGS....

It's a logical answer. But story is a major aspect of MGS so it's acceptable imo, for audience members to express their opinions as far as it's shortcomings. Same as camera issues with NG2, or the weak feel of weapons in Bionic Commando.

So you must be able to tolerate the long white, effeminate hair on men, and the ridiculous level of undress on women without bursting into laughter. And of course there's the silly, never ending, convoluted line of heroes and villains who are all indirectly engineered from the same guy. The whole concept is just silly, like something out of 80's japanese sci fi gone horribly wrong.

Take off the fanboy goggles and look at it objectively, Splinter Cell has always been huge especially last generation. It's been relatively absent thus far but it's coming back." Both are great, two of my favorite series. Story: Metal Gear Solid Stealth Gameplay: Splinter Cell Overall Gameplay: Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid Graphics: Won't say till we see Rising and Convictions Overall: Metal Gear Solid

Graphics: They both look equally good.

Gameplay: MGS stealth gameplay is good, SC is better.

Story: MGS easily.

People complain about the cutscenes because MGS relies on them to be a complete, fleshed-out experience. I'm not saying that it doesn't have good gameplay, but if not for the cutscenes, it would fall flat.

Although I enjoy Metal Gear Solid more than the Splinter Cell series (though Conviction looks amazing), Kojima needs to stop the self-indulgence and learn to tell an economic story in which cutscenes are minimized and gameplay is maximized. There's no reason for the game to reply on cutscenes so heavily.

Many of MGS's cutscenes are entertaining, but there's no way that cutscenes are involving. In fact, they get flak precisely because they are an uninvolving peice of what is supposed to be an interactive experience.

SC being the better stealth game (emphasis on "stealth").... mgs feels like an action adventure game with some minor stealth elements sprinkled in in compariosn to SC

(agian the focus here is stealth gameplay)

but overall, all things considered, i like the mgs series more. i'm no fanboy so i can acknowledge the fact that mgs cant hold a candle to how SC handles stealth (no fanboy goggles ftw)

I'm not a huge fan of stealth games in general but I really am interested in this new story telling mechanic they are doing with the new SC - having cutscenes, clues etc. painted and running into the background...very interesting style. It also seems to be an interesting way of keeping the story and the game moving without cutting to a non user controlled movie sequence.

I can appreciate why people love Metal Gear's story and stylings. But it's just not for me. The characters and storytelling have too much of an anime sensibility for me to get into.

I enjoy Splinter Cell's more realistic take on stealth, as well it's more western-centric story.

MGS has always been more action than stealth.

And quite frankly neither have been 'the best stealth games'.

Because the reality is.

THIEF >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Both as far as stealth games go.

http://digitizor.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/thief.jpg

Oh and Commandos is also one of the best, and underrated stealth titles.

Image

Oh but what is a better series of the two?

Metal Gear Solid, of course.

Not exactly

Castle Wolfenstein was the first, years before.

And other titles evolved it further, beyond MG/MGSs rather... limited mechanics (its core design is still very true to its origins)

And no its not the best at stealth gameplay - hell MGS4s stealth game design had more flaws than its predecessors due to a shift in design.

As great as the series is - and I am quite a fan of it - its certainly not the strongest stealth series... but one of the great gaming series.

I don't think anyone has mentioned multiplayer yet. Splinter Cell outclasses Metal Gear when it comes to multiplayer, almost by default.

Maybe its the difficulty people choose but MGS has always been heavily a stealth game the way I play it. I always choose the highest difficulty level when playing it and I can never just run and gun. Now of course unlike SC, MGS has Boss battles which for the most part don't involve stealth but I don't think that takes away from the vast amount of stealth the game already contains. I mean MGS mastered many staples in the stealth genre. SC has never been that impressive to me. I think people think's its more of a stealth game because it lacks cutscenes and over the top Boss Fights and is just a string of missions where you get from point A to point B hunched over. But of course SC also lacks a decent story. Never been a fan and don't know why people think SC, an imitator could topple the game it once mimicked.

Gameplay = MGS Story = MGS Graphics = MGS might change to Splinter Cell when DA comes out on PS3. Gameplay I would say MGS because well I have played games before that have similar gameplay to Spinter Cell, MGS gameplay I would say is more unique. Story...yeh I don't really need to explain this. graphics...thats very simple MGS has a game on PS3, Splinter Cell doesn't yet but Double agent is coming out sometime it might be different then.

Heck no it hasn't. From a purely stealth design perspective it completely lacks the complexity and depth of other stealth titles.

MGS is a better series by far. One of the greatest series in gaming, ever.

Heck no it hasn't. From a purely stealth design perspective it completely lacks the complexity and depth of other stealth titles.

I think you misread his post. He meant to say:

How dare anyone even entertain idea that any series can hold a candle to Metal Gear. No one should be allowed to argue otherwise. *stick fingers in ears* Lalalalalalalalalala

This is ignorant....................................... Exactly what complexitities do you speak of? Metal Gear went from simple hide n shoot to hiding in boxes to neck breaking to hiding bodies to hanging off of platforms to banging walls for distraction to holding guards up to human shields to stealth camo to etc, etc, etc. There are TONS of different gameplay mechanics and gadgets that metal gear did first and still does best. Splinter Cell is an ok game as far as stealth goes, but the gameplay and control is pretty bad. Not to mention the stories lack any kind of depth. Conviction looks good, but it (yet again) adopts all its gameplay innovations from other games. V.A.T.S. anyone?

This is immature. .................... There's no reason to mock someone for appreciating a franchise for all the wonderful advances its brought to the very genre it started.

I agree with this totally. A lot of people try to say MGS is more action than stealth, but it really depends on how you play. Honestly, I like going all out stealth on one play through and run and gun on the next. Its a nice option to have. There's one thing MGS wins at for sure: Replay value. :P

Splinter Cell has Michael Ironside so that's an instant win for me.
