This is stupid. You're buying a prebuilt gaming PC with a lame OS that needs another gaming PC running windows in order for you to play all the games you could play with one PC. LA-Nighthawk

It says in the FAQ it can run 3000 games natively already.

Also I don't get why everyone is so negative.

Also last dotpoint:

"Am I going to be using a mouse and a keyboard in the living-room?

If you want. But Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too. Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input."

There is no one Steam Box

Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.

Clearly talks about their own prototype box going out to Beta testers soon.

Apparently, Steam-machines won´t be SteamOS exclusive as they support all Steam games. Basically they are pre-built PC with a Steam logo on them.

WTF....where are the games??

I need news about Half Life 3 or Left 4 Dead 3....or both

PAL360
All these were teased as Steam announcements. How do you get Half Life 3 and L4D3 from that? Those would be Valve announcements.

The most exciting news from all this is the linux based OS that's finally getting nvidia support.  Maybe they can shake some market space from Microsoft's cold dead grip.  Especially if they use a better solution than the dinosaur direct x API.

Yeah open mind and all. If the steam machines are cheaper than your average gaming pc that'd still be a win in the end.

Basically they will start selling their own gaming desktops, like Alienware, but cheaper.

emmm no? :p it will be like consoles

seems closer to PC than consoles -only plays steam games, has to stream from other PC to play anything else. -upgradable hardware -completely open to customizing/modding/hacking the only thing that makes it sound like a console is that the OS was made with TVs/Livingroom in mind, rather than a traditional desktop setup

Too bad that I have always used Metacritic, long before TLOU was even out. But Lems were the ones that said Gamespot is the only thing that counts, not me.

By Lems you mean the basic rules of system wars for over a decade, only complained about by the exceptional one or two anally damaged individuals such as yourself?

So Steam Machines, huh? Admittedly, it seems a bit less pointless. Selling a dedicated gaming machine that where the consumer is, in fact, allowed to fiddle around with it. That's interesting, though I suspect it'll be highly niche.

No, it's totally independent from your PC, you can play most steam games on it without problem. If anything it's more like a PC-console hybrid, aka an upgradable and more open console.

What matters now is the price point. If it costs more than a PS4/XB1 there won't be any reason to own one, and you may as well settle for a gaming PC.

It will. Saving a bit on OS,but it'll use the same hardware as in PCs

There'll be many models, as they said. One of them will be a beast, obviously. And there will probably a model that are cheaper than PS4/X1. You get what you pay for.

Joined the pool.

I knew I should have opt in the Steam Beta Cards. Those guys are probably going to get first helpings.

Still, I'd like to get one of these things and test out the OS.

What games will be available during the beta? The nearly 3,000 games on Steam. Hundreds already running natively on the SteamOS, with more to come. The rest will work seamlessly via in-home streaming.

Great to hear, though it sucks that Windows and Mac OSs are still needed to run every game. Though They say more to come.

Not necessarily. If they charge reasonably, not like alienware, then many people would buy a Steam pre-built PC in order not to build one for themselves.

Steam Machines are just PCs that are built around SteamOS. Valve has their own which will be open and upgradeable, but other comapnies may make non-upgradeable versions for cheaper.

There is really no limit. You can build your own Steam Machine too.

Can't wait to see 5-6 Steam Machines sitting on shelves next to PS4/Xbox One. Consumers love to be confused. But in all honesty, this is a great potential product if you're a console only gamer and want to get into PC gaming with a potentially lower cost and living room-based solution. The problem is, we don't know the price or specs at all, so this announcement is pretty null and void. I think Steam OS is a far more exciting announcement than Steam Machines. I mean, Piston was a SteamMachine and it was going to cost $999 bucks. That's not really going to move the needle. I was hoping this announcement would be a Valve created box, with some specs to give you an idea of what it can do. We got nothing here, just potential and frankly you'd be better off just building a top tier PC and streaming your PC to your TV via SteamOS.
